Tolkiens literary imagination to vivid life with his Academy- and Grammy Award-winning score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Shores music expresses Peter Jacksons film as an immense symphonic worka uniquely developed vision drawn from centuries of stylistic tendencies. The music of The Lord of the Rings is counted among film musics most complex and comprehensive works. This unique performance sets the score to the film, but allows the music to bear the narrative weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic live concert experience. Shores score not only captures Fellowships sweeping emotion, thrilling vistas and grand journeys, but also echoes the very construction of Tolkiens Middle-earth. Styles, instruments and performers collected from around the world provide each of Tolkiens cultures with a unique musical imprint. From Rawhide and High Noon to Cyrano de Bergerac and The Alamo, Dimitri Tiomkins film soundtracks, for which he won four Oscars, conjure up the wide open plains, ten-gallon Stetsons and the quick draw of a Smith & Wesson like no others. But in more than 100 films Tiomkin underscored nearly every genre: drama, comedy, film noir, adventure, war documentary; bringing them all vividly to life. Tonights concert celebrates the breadth of one of Hollywoods most distinguished composers.

Almost any film music reviewer will attest to the fact that you find more duds than gems when dealing with scores from little-known composers, and I didn't expect much from this score. I am pleased to report that Mr. Argo's score for PJ is a hidden gem, one that I sincerely hope is made available to the public at some point.

This intimate orchestral score was a very pleasant surprise, reminding me a little bit of the low-key work of Elmer Bernstein. The opening P. J. Main Title is a gorgeous (though brief) piece of music that hooked me immediately.

If the score is ever made available to the public, I hope that it will be re-arranged into a slightly tighter listening experience. That being said, this is an excellent effort. It's precisely the sort of timeless film scoring that we hear so precious little of these days, and that deserves recognition. If you ever get the chance to pick up a copy, by all means do so. I hope we hear more from Mr. Argo in the future.
