BEGINNING BAND

PROGRAM NOTES

Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument in the English county of Wiltshire, has been a mystery to both scientists and historians for hundreds of years. Constructed of earthworks surrounded by massive stones, this structure dates back to 3,100 B.C.

It is believed that Stonehenge began as a burial ground about 5,000 years ago. The huge stones were added around 2,500 B.C., and although no one knows for sure, the arrangement of these stones suggests either religious or astronomical connections. Some even offer Stonehenge as “proof” of supernatural intervention.

In any case, the mystery and enormous scope of Stonehenge make it one of the most unique wonders of the world.

NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR

Stonehenge has a marked tempo of q =126. The piece is designed to be performed entirely at that tempo. However, if you wish, the sections beginning at measure 31 may be played slightly slower, with a gradual accelerando in bars 46 and 47 to return to the original tempo before the D.S.

The percussion 1 part is written for either a snare drum (with the snares off), tom-tom, or a combination of the two.

Depending on the number of trumpet players you have, you may want to limit how many play measures 42–44, so as not to cover up the woodwind melody.
