JerusalemActs 2:1-13

Isaiah 2:2-3 (NIV) 2 In the last days the mountain of the LORD's temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it. 3 Many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths." The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Luke 24:46-47 (NIV) 46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Acts 1:8 (NIV) 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Acts 11:15 (NIV) 15 "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.

Beginning of the Kingdom/Church

1 Timothy 3:15 (NIV) 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.

Beginning of the Kingdom/Church

Matthew 16:18-19 (NIV) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Beginning of the Kingdom/Church

Mark 9:1 (NIV) 1 And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Acts 1:8 (NIV) 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes

on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Acts 2:1-4 (NIV) 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2:6 (NIV) 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Acts 2:8 (NIV) 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Acts 2:11 (NIV) 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

Acts 2:5-13 (NIV) 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."

Beginning of the Kingdom/Church

Jesus had said that when the Holy Spirit came…

the power would come…

when the power had come…

the Kingdom had come!

Beginning of Apostolic PowerJesus gave the promise only to His apostles (Acts 1:2, 4-5)

The antecedent of “they” in 2:1 is the word “apostle” in 1:26

All who were filled with the Spirit spoke in tongues (2:4), but all those who spoke were Galileans (2:7). All the apostles were Galileans but all the 120 were not.

Those who were filled with the Spirit were accused of being drunk (2:13), but Peter, “taking his stand with the eleven,” said, “These men are not drunk (2:15).”

In 2:37, only the apostles were addressed, indicating that only they had been speaking.

Some Amazing Points to Ponder with this Day of Beginnings

THIS DAY BROUGHT A REVERSAL TO THE CURSE OF BABEL

Gen. 11 – mankind was cursed with many languages and was scattered.

Acts 2 – men with their many languages all heard the same message and were united.

Gen. 11 – man was being exalted / Acts 2 – God is exalted

Gen. 11 – rebellion! / Acts 2 – submission!

Some Amazing Points to Ponder with this Day of Beginnings

THIS DAY BROUGHT A REVERSAL TO THE CURSE OF BABEL

Gen. 11 – the result was the division of mankind into separate… races, nations, boundaries and peoples… governed by different rulers… resulting in hardships, war and death.

Acts 2 – brought back all mankind into one people… serving one King… in one kingdom of peace! (Gal. 3:27)

Some Amazing Points to Ponder with this Day of Beginnings

THIS FINAL DAY OF PENTECOST BROUGHT AN END AND REVERSAL OF THE EVENTS OF MT. SINAI AND THE LAW OF MOSES.

The purpose of the Day of Pentecost in Jewish life was to celebrate the giving of the Law of Moses on Mt. Sinai.

The giving of the Law on Mt. Sinai occurred 50 days following the killing of the first Passover lamb.

The giving of the law of Christ (gospel et al) took place 50 days following the death of our Passover Lamb Jesus Christ (Jn. 1:29).

Some Amazing Points to Ponder with this Day of Beginnings

THIS FINAL DAY OF PENTECOST BROUGHT AN END AND REVERSAL OF THE EVENTS OF MT. SINAI AND THE LAW OF MOSES.

On both occasions, God manifested His presence with wondrous signs.

When the Law of Moses was given 3,000 died (Ex. 32:28); when the Law of Christ was given 3,000 were saved (Acts 2:41)

When the Law was given, there was fear (Ex. 19:6); when the law of Christ was proclaimed there was rejoicing (Acts 2:46)

Some Amazing Points to Ponder with this Day of Beginnings

THIS FINAL DAY OF PENTECOST BROUGHT AN END AND REVERSAL OF THE EVENTS OF MT. SINAI AND THE LAW OF MOSES.

The Day of Pentecost under the Law of Moses was a “day of firstfruits.” The final Day of Pentecost was a day of firstfruits or beginnings – kingdom/church… apostolic power… gospel… the law of Christ… the firstfruits of Christianity!
