The California High Speed Rail Authority is planning the first high-speed rail system in the United States, which will ferry passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in under three hours at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour. Responsible for the portion of the railway that runs from Burbank to Anaheim, California the engineering team at Jacobs/Zephyr UAS used unmanned aerial vehicles to capture mapping data of the rail corridor, enabling the authorities to determine right-way impacts with improved accuracy reducing the environmental footprint of the project.

Burbank to Los Angeles to Anaheim, California, United States

THE PROJECT TEAM: Using MicroStation and OpenRail, Jacobs/Zephyr UAS prepared base maps for the track plans using the aerial mapping data obtained from the UAVs. The geographically dispersed project team used ProjectWise for efficient data sharing and version control. Combining the use of UAVs with Bentley technology allowed for the detailed mapping to be completed within eight weeks instead of 18 weeks using manned vehicles. This resulted in a 78% reduction in delivery time and an 87% reduction in mapping costs.
