Olivia was hungry. She was also tired. Her shift today was ten hours long. She ate her food. Her break was too quick. She wasn’t happy to return to work, but she had to finish her shift.

Olivia looked at the clock. She let out a sigh of relief when she noticed that her break was next. Her stomach growled; she couldn’t remember the last time she ate. Was it this morning or the night before? She blinked slowly as if her eyelids were too heavy for her facial muscles to control. She was working a ten hour shift today. She grabbed the sandwich she brought for lunch and shoved the whole thing in her mouth at once. Her break was ending way too quickly. With five minutes left, she placed her head down at the table in front of her and closed her eyes. “When will this day end?” she muttered to herself.

Characterization

• Two Types:

–Direct• Telling the reader what the character is like

– Indirect • Showing the reader what the character is like

Direct v. Indirect

• Developing your characters in your writing is called characterization. A writer can “tell” the reader what a character is like, or he can show the reader. “Showing” is far more effective. Showing the reader what a character is like is called indirect characterization. Describing how a character looks, acts, thinks, and speaks is an effective way to get a point across.

“How many times do I have to tell you?” she screamed at her sister. “You’re going to stretch it out, you cow!” She paused a long while and took a deep breath. “It’s brand new,” she said in a more quiet tone, “I haven’t even worn it once.”
