Power connectionR Use only the power source marked on the

product.R Do not overload power outlets and

extension cords. This can result in the riskof fire or electric shock.

R Completely insert the AC adaptor/powerplug into the power outlet. Failure to do somay cause electric shock and/or excessiveheat resulting in a fire.

etc.) onto the telephone line cord plug, orallow it to become wet at all. This maycause a fire. If the telephone line cord plugbecomes wet, immediately pull it from thetelephone wall jack, and do not use.

medical devices, such as pacemakers orhearing aids, to determine if they areadequately shielded from external RF(radio frequency) energy. (The productoperates in the frequency range of1.92 GHz to 1.93 GHz, and the RFtransmission power is 115 mW (max.).)

Note for connectionsR The AC adaptor must remain connected at

all times. (It is normal for the adaptor to feelwarm during use.)

R The AC adaptor should be connected to avertically oriented or floor-mounted ACoutlet. Do not connect the AC adaptor to aceiling-mounted AC outlet, as the weight ofthe adaptor may cause it to becomedisconnected.

Answering calls

Power backup operationWhen a power failure occurs, the chargedhandset temporarily supplies power to thebase unit (power backup mode). This allowsyou to make and receive calls using a handsetduring a power failure. The base unit will notperform any other functions. However, somefunctions such as Caller ID and phonebookare available only when using a handset otherthan the handset supplying power to the baseunit. You can program “Power failure”and the default setting is “Auto” (page 32).Important:R If a handset is not placed on the base unit

when a power failure occurs, “Base nopower Press OFF” is displayed. Afterpressing MOFFN on the handset, place it onthe base unit to start power backup mode.

Call blockYou can press the MCALL BLOCKN button inthe following situations to disconnect thecurrent call and add a phone number to thecall block list:– when an incoming call is being received– when an incoming call is being recorded by

the answering system– when talking on an outside callOnce a phone number has been added to thecall block list, the unit will block calls from thatphone number in the future.1 Press MCALL BLOCKN under the

situations shown above.2 Confirm the call block number and press

MYESN.R The call block number is stored in the

call block list, “Caller blocked” isdisplayed, and then the call isdisconnected.

Note:R If the call has no phone number, the call is

blocked but it is not stored in the call blocklist.

Storing unwanted callersThe unit can block calls by storing the desireditems in the call block list beforehand (CallerID subscribers only).– “Block a single number”: The unit

blocks calls from specific phone numbersstored in the call block list.

– “Block range of numbers”: The unitblocks calls that begin with a number storedin the call block list, such as a toll-freephone number prefix or certain area codes.

– “Block unknown CID”: The unit blockscalls that have no phone number.

Single phone numbers and ranges of numberscan be stored in the call block list up to 250items in total.

Blocking unwanted callers:When a call is received, the unit rings once*1

while caller information is being received.If the caller’s phone number matches an entryin the call block list, the unit emits no sound tothe caller, and disconnects the call.*1 If you do not want this one ring to sound,

select “No” in “Turning the first ring onand off” (page 24).

Storing a single phone numberImportant:R We recommend storing 10 digits (including

Baby monitorThis feature allows you to listen in on a roomwhere another handset is located, allowingyou to easily monitor from different areas ofthe house or even while away from home. Themonitored handset (placed in a baby’s room,for example) will automatically call the

monitoring handset, base unit, or the phonenumber stored when it detects sound.Important:R Before using this feature, we recommend

that you test this feature and adjust thebaby monitor sensitivity as needed,especially if you plan to monitor fromoutside.

Caller ID featuresWhen an outside call is being received, thecaller information is displayed.Caller information for the last 50 callers islogged in the caller list from the most recentcall to the oldest.R If the unit cannot receive caller information,

Caller ID number auto edit featureOnce you call back an edited number, the unitwhich was used to call back remembers thearea code and format of the edited number.The next time someone calls from the samearea code, caller information is customized bythe unit as follows:– When the call is being received, the Caller

ID number is displayed in the same formatas the edited number.

– After the call has ended, the caller’s phonenumber is displayed in the same format asthe edited number, when reviewed from thecaller list.

For example, you can use this feature to setthe unit to ignore the area code of callers inyour area, so that you can call these localnumbers using caller information withoutdialing the area code.To activate this feature, you must edit an entryin the caller list, then call that number. Afterthat, phone numbers from that caller’s areacode are edited automatically.This feature can be set for each unit(page 32). Answering systemThe answering system can answer and recordcalls for you when you are unavailable toanswer the phone.You can also set the unit to play a greetingmessage but not to record caller messages byselecting “Greeting only” as the recordingtime setting (page 46).Important:R Make sure the unit’s date and time setting

Memory capacity (including yourgreeting message)The total recording capacity is about 17minutes. A maximum of 64 messages can berecorded.Note:R When message memory becomes full:

Voicemail serviceIn addition to your unit’s answering systemyou may also have voicemail service fromyour phone service provider. Voicemail isan answering service that may be offered byyour phone service provider. This service canalso record calls when you are unavailable toanswer the phone or when your line is busy.Messages are recorded on the phonecompany system and not on the unit’sanswering system.R To use the voicemail service rather than the

unit’s answering system, turn off theanswering system (page 41).

If you have unit’s answering system set to onand also the voicemail enabled, the systemwith least amount of rings will record themessage first.Example:If the unit’s answering system is set to 4 rings(page 46) and the voicemail answering systemprovided by your phone company is set to 6rings (call your service provider), the unit’sanswering system will record the incoming callfirst.Important:R You need to store the voicemail access

Your phone service provider sends specialsignals (sometimes called “voicemail tones” or“stutter tones”) to the unit to let you know youhave new voicemail messages. If you hear aseries of dial tones followed by a continuousdial tone after you press M N on the handsetor press MZN on the base unit, you have newvoicemail messages. Soon after you hang upa call or after the phone stops ringing, yourunit checks the phone line to see if newvoicemail messages have been recorded.Turn this feature off when:– You do not subscribe to voicemail service.– Your phone service provider does not send

R This notification is displayed when your phone serviceprovider’s voicemail service (not the unit’s answeringsystem) has recorded a message for you. Typically youcan remove this notification from the display by listeningto the message. To listen to the message, dial thevoicemail number provided by your phone serviceprovider (for most cases, this will be your own phonenumber), and follow the voice instructions. Depending onyour phone service provider, you may need to remove allmessages from your voice mailbox to remove thenotification. You can also remove this notification bypressing and holding # until the unit beeps.

Liquid damage
