    Next Play Consulting Group was

    So how do you convey that on a Web site?How about by writing it on a big, bold, chalk-

    board! Faster than you can add 2+2, the viewer

    sees that Next Play is an educational site, what

    its about and whos involved. And the board

    makes an excellent ocal point.

    Start at the top

    Key to the site is a ull-width chalkboard that the viewer will read beore anythingelse. Handwritten text pulls the viewer into the story and on down the page.

    Chalkboard bannerhas unusu-

    ally strong associations becauseeveryones spent endless hours

    looking at one. Its visual properties

    only make it strongerits big, bold

    (black against white), and its on

    top. In this space, Next Play tells its

    story literally and graphically. A stu-

    dent at the chalkboard conveys the

    classroom setting. The who they

    are and what they do that would

    otherwise be buried in the text are

    now at the top o the page where

    theyll do the most good.

    (1) Select an image, and in Photoshop mask out or otherwise delete the

    chalkboard. You can remain in Photoshop or the ollowing steps or move your

    cutout image into InDesign.

    (2) Reect the image i necessary and place it on the right. Draw a chalk-

    board rectangle the width o your page, and fll it very dark gray (about 98%).

    At the bottom draw a thin navigation bar, and fll it solid black.

    (3) Add realism The only attractive chalkboard is a clean chalkboard, but or

    some realism, you can mess up the surace slightly. We used Mister Retros

    (www.misterretro.com) Machine Washabrasive flter, but an easy alternative is

    to paste in a second photo (above) that has a tinyamount o dust.

    (4) Add the words in a handwritten typeace to

    fnish the look. Typeset the secondary message, and

    color it low-key gray. Add green to highlight the com-

    pany name and balance the design (right).

    Examine the logo

    The characteristics o the logo will govern the details o the site. First step is to takea visual inventory. Pay attention to typeace, color, line and shape.

    Typeace Futura Extra Bold is an American classic; clear, very

    bold and simplestrokes are straight, and curves are almost

    perect circles. For logos and short titles, set it very tightlythe

    bigger the tighter; letters should overlap or nearly.

    ColorYellow-green conveys vibrancy,

    loudness, warmth and youth, all o

    which describe the target audience.

    Thats good stu. But too much o it

    (top, let) is not a smart choice, because

    run together. Instead, set the descrip-

    tive line in a darker color.

    Angles are active. When combining two letters, ideally you want both toshare a similar edge (top, let). But because letters X and T have dierent

    edges, an angled gap is used to combine the two.

    Shapes change with distance (Above, let) Far away,Futura Extra Bold caps orm simple rectangles that stack

    neatly. Up close reveals an energetic interplay o negative

    shapes (above, right), and those circles are easy to see.
