1 Richfield Dual Language School http://www.rdls.richfield.k12.mn.us/ Agency Description: The Richfield Dual Language School represents the first suburban dual immersion program in the State of Minnesota. The school opened its doors in September 2007 with 100 kindergartners. Each year we added a grade level resulting in a k-5 elementary school for the 2012-2013 academic school year. Younger grades are taught 90% in Spanish and 10% in English. Then, the percentage of class time taught in English moves up with each grade, with 5 th grade taught in 50% English and 50% Spanish. About fifty percent of the students are native Spanish speakers. We seek volunteers that would like to assist the teachers helping students with academic activities (reading, writing, and math). Our schedule goes from 7:45 am to 2:10 pm. Our Vision In partnership with our families and the community, the vision of the Richfield Dual Language School is to prepare all students to become lifelong learners and leaders in their local and global communities who successfully meet or exceed grade level expectations in English and Spanish through an education built on the foundations of bilingualism, strength of diversity, academic rigor, critical-thinking, and mutual respect. www.janeaddamsschool.org Agency Description: Jane Addams School for Democracy brings together immigrant families with college students and community members to engage in dialogue, public work, and education focusing on the principle that everyone is a teacher and a learner. Our mission is to free and cultivate the talents, cultures, and interests of ordinary people of diverse backgrounds and traditions, in order to add their energy and wisdom to the common public wealth. JAS is inspired by the vision of democracy, productive citizenship, and popular education held by settlement house pioneers like Jane Addams where people can come and work together to achieve goals and improve the community. JAS values’ are:

Job Description: There are currently 2 learning circles at JAS. On Mondays (6:30-8:30pm, Baker Center, 209 W. Page Street, St. Paul, 55107) we have a Spanish Circle. Students must commit to participating on the same day weekly throughout the semester (2.5 hours per week, or about 25 hours total for the semester). In the adult circles, we have a cultural exchange discussion (with translation) for part of the night. For the other half of the night, learning pairs (of college student and immigrant adult) work together on preparing for the citizenship test, literacy learning, computer skills, conversation, social action, and collaborative projects. Special requirements: Each night for 30 minutes prior to the learning circle (Mondays 6:00-6:30 pm) we have Welcome Workshop sessions for college students to reflect on their experience, develop relevant skills, and discuss issues related to their community work. Volunteer Position Descriptions:

Adult ESL Tutor: Assist adult learners in acquiring the English language and life-skills necessary to overcome the obstacles in their everyday lives. Spanish NOT required.

Responsibilities: Use the CLUES curriculum and resources provided to prepare engaging lesson plans for each class, communicate with program coordinator, and maintain accurate attendance records and log a lesson report on CLUES's website for each class.

Schedule and Commitment: Volunteers must teach one daytime or evening class per week for the entire term. o 2015 Spring Term: Monday, January 26th-Thursday, April 30th, 2015 o Class Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday

Children’s Teacher: Work with preschool-aged children and lead activities in reading, art, early math, science, and group games while their parents attend ESL classes. Spanish Required.

Responsibilities: work cooperatively in the classroom to supervise and educate multicultural students through literacy-based games and activities.

Schedule and Commitment: Volunteers must teach one daytime or evening class per week for the entire term. o 2015 Spring Term: Monday, January 26th-Thursday, April 30th, 2015 o Class Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday

Tax Prep Program Assistant: Assist CLUES staff in providing free tax preparation services to clients with low or moderate income who are primarily Spanish-speaking.

Responsibilities: volunteers have their choice of serving as a Tax Preparer, an Interpreter, or a Screener. Spanish is required for all positions except Tax Preparer.

Schedule and Commitment: Volunteers should commit to one evening per week for the duration of tax season.

January 5th – January 9th, Evenings, at MN Department of Revenue January 13th – January 17th, Evenings, at MN Department of Revenue January 17th – January 18th, Times TBD, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville

2. Complete a and pass required VITA Certification Test Youth Tutor: work with school-aged students in one-on-one tutoring sessions while their parents attend ESL classes. Spanish helpful but NOT required.

Responsibilities: Tutors will assist with homework, build literacy skills, and be a positive mentor for the students while following lesson plans provided by Coordinator, or creating new ways to introduce learning games and activities.

Partnership Academy:

www.paschool.org Agency Description:

Partnership Academy is a K-5 Charter School in Richfield. They serve a diverse student group and the school

has a large population of Latino students for whom Spanish is their first language. Partnership Academy is

authorized by Project for Pride in Living (PPL), a nonprofit housing and social services organization. Through

this authorization, PPL seeks to empower students from low-income families to achieve success in school and

in life through academic support and hands-on enrichment opportunities.

After-School Program Tutors/Mentors:

Partnership Academy seeks volunteers of diverse backgrounds and experiences to help make reading, writing,

and learning fun. Volunteers serve as After-School Program Tutors/Mentors Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday

3:45-5:30 pm. Most volunteers serve 1 or 2 days per week; the minimum commitment is serving one night per

week for a minimum of 1 semester.

However, we intend to recruit volunteers that can commit to a full academic school year.

After-School Program Tutors/Mentors:

• Support youth as they engage in fun literacy-building activities

• Help youth meet individual literacy goals in a 1:1 or small group setting

• Provide hands-on attention that empowers youth to develop greater self-confidence and stronger literacy

skills

• Demonstrate a commitment to youth through consistent attendance and encouragement

• Work with staff to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment. A yearlong commitment is

preferred, though students can volunteer for the semester.
