Membership to the beekeeping federation: “Fédération des Unions des Apiculteurs Luxembourgeoise” (FUAL) Beekeepers enjoy a wonderful hobby where their bees collect nectar, pollen and propolis and produce honey, royal jelly and wax. Beekeepers are supported by their local beekeeper club. The list of clubs and their contacts can be found on the left hand side of this page. Luxembourg is organised into 12 Cantons (Kantons): Capellen Clervaux Diekirch Echternach Esch-sur- Alzette Grevenmacher Luxemburg Mersch Redingen Remich Vianden Wiltz If you do not know your Canton, you can find a list of communes and their associated canton here. Each of the above cantons has a beekeeper club or union. All of these unions cooperate through the "Fédération des Union d'Apiculteurs du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg" (FUAL) or “Luxemburger Landesverband für Bienenzucht". When you become a member of a Canton, they will also register you as a member of the federation FUAL. The membership fee varies from Canton to Canton; most of your membership fee is used by the Canton to pay the membership fee of FUAL. The membership fee charged by the Canton is decided at their annual General Assembly meeting. We encourage the Bee Together group to join a Canton that is located near them. Each Canton organises regular meetings though in some cases it may be difficult to have discussions in English. Consequently, the Bee Together group will continue to organise English-based meetings and events, and using Google Groups, we will invite the members of the Cantons to come to English activities. Some of the benefits of joining a beekeeper club are outlined below. Receive the monthly beekeeper news magazine “Lëtzebuerger Beien-Zeitung” with articles and information mostly in German. Some of the clubs provide the first hive with bees for starters. You can obtain advice for different challenges with your bees during the meetings. Training courses are provided every year for beginners and for experienced members. A wax melting steam kettle can be borrowed to be used at home to clean the frames. In spring you can bring your wax to obtain wax sheet from your own wax with your size for new frames.

Assistance is provided for the treatment against varroa mites. Products are distributed in August at a

very low cost.

By law we need to register our colonies and indicate their location once a year in the national

register. You must also obtain authorisation to have bees in the city, a village and countryside.

Please consult this document for further information.

Good quality sugar syrup can be ordered at low cost. The syrup is ordered with a form provided by

the magazine.

We can apply to obtain the national certificate “Marque Nationale” for your honey through a form

provided by the Beien Zeitung magazine. Thereafter you will be invited to register by postal mail.

Once a year, normally in August or September, Administration for Technical Agriculture Services

(ASTA) makes an announcement in the monthly beekeeper journal (Beien-Zeitung). Beekeepers can

place their order (end September) and receive their seeds in November via the local club to which

they have become members.

Beekeepers are responsible for the behaviour of their bees and are encouraged obtain civil liability

insurance ('Haftpflicht' / responsabilité civile). If you are member of FUAL, you are protected for the

amount of the damages that exceed the ceiling of your civil liability insurance.

We suggest that you become a member of the Kanton nearest to where you live. The list of Kantons

can be found on the left hand side of this page.
