In a successful retirement income plan it is essential that you protect your portfolio from losses in the early years.

To illustrate this concept I want to tell you a story of two brothers, Steve and Bill. Both brothers retired with the same $500,000 in each of their IRAs, and both needed to withdraw $30,000 annually as supplemental income. The biggest difference for Steve and Bill was the timing of their retirement.

Steve achieved his retirement goals early and was able to retire in 1990. It took Bill another 10 years before he was able to make the same retirement decision in 2000. Let’s take a look at how both of them faired in their first 10 years of retirement.

Based on market returns in the 90’s versus the 2000’s, their remaining IRA balances are very different. After 10 years of retirement, Steve’s IRA balance is over $1.2 Million due to the bull market of the 90’s.

Bill was not so lucky. He retired right before the dot.com bust, and after 10 years his retirement had dwindled to just $156k.

Both brothers made the same retirement decisions, but events outside of their control left them with entirely different outcomes. Based on the 10-year account balances, Steve should be able to continue comfortably receiving

$30k annually from his IRA. Bill, on the other hand, will have to be much more careful with his withdrawals to avoid running out of money.

Your specific circumstances are likely different from both Steve and Bill, but this hypothetical example highlights the importance of the impact sequence of returns can have on a retirement income plan.

When you retire and trade in your company paycheck for a portfolio paycheck generated by your investments, you no longer have time on your side to ride out negative market volatility. The importance of implementing a guaranteed lifetime income plan must not be neglected.

By properly balancing your portfolio across different retirement asset classes, you can insure that you will have a lifetime of income that you cannot outlive, and at the same time, hedge yourself against inflation and future healthcare concerns.

If you would like further information on this topic or to receive a copy of our report on retirement income planning, please send your requests to the email below. As always, we are here to answer your pressing questions and concerns regarding retirement investment planning.

ROLLING SCULPTURE CAR SHOWThe annual Hill Country Rolling Sculpture Car Show will

return to the Hill Country Galleria on Sunday, October 26th to celebrate all aspects of the car hobby. Hill Country Boulevard will be reserved for collector cars, antiques, modern classics, exotics, muscle cars, street rods, foreign sports cars and art cars all parked on display for the public. The focus is on fun and a common passion for everything automotive. Awards will be given by the show’s sponsors according to themes they’ve selected. For example, Whole Foods Market will determine which car is the “Best Grocery Getter.” All proceeds from the show will benefit the Friends of Bee Cave Public Library, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the Bee Cave Public Library, located in the heart of the Galleria. Other sponsors this year include Mosing Motorcars, Lake Travis Home Team/Keller Williams Realty, Elite Wellness Chiropractic, Kwik Kar Lube-Bee Cave, Fiat Alfa-Romeo of Austin, Avanti Hills at the Galleria, Scott Coburn/Wells Fargo

Home Mortgage, Hill Country Dentist and Orthodontics, The Boardroom Salon for Men, McDonald’s-Bee Cave, Coachworks, and Ash Creek Homes.

“The Rolling Sculpture Car Show, which benefits the Friends of Bee Cave Public Library, has been a real difference-maker for us,” said Library Director Barbara Hathaway. “There are never enough funds to meet all the needs of a library growing as fast as Bee Cave’s. Over the past 6 years, the Car Show has raised more than $20,000 to benefit the library, helping to underwrite new programs and special collections. This year, we bought a high-quality digital camera and a portable sound system that we used throughout our busy Summer Reading Program.”

The Rolling Sculpture Car Show is free to the public, and runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be live music during the event, with trophies awarded at 2:30 p.m. To register a show car, visit www.rollingsculpturecarshow.com.
