When to Start TreatmentThis is a decision only you and your child canmake in consultation with your physician or nursepractitioner. Research shows that alarm therapyis most effective if both child and family aremotivated to achieve dryness. Most pediatriciansrecommend that your child be at least six years ofage. Approximately 15% of children who wet willstop each year without any help — and 85%won’t!

Bedwetting Alarms Are EffectiveBedwetting alarms are a mainstay in the treatmentof bedwetting. They are an easy first step thatprovide a long lasting effect. Bedwetting alarmsare much different than setting an alarm clock towake your child. They sound in response tourination, which varies in time from night to night.

How Alarms WorkBedwetting alarms help children learn to achievenighttime dryness by conditioning the child to stopthe flow of urine when sleeping. A loud noisesounds at the first drops of urine and awakens thechild. Over time children learn to sense the needto awaken in response to a full bladder and contractthe pelvic floor muscles to inhibit the flow of urine.

Most alarms consist of a small, wearable plasticalarm box that attaches tothe shoulder area and amoisture sensor thatattaches to snug fittingunderwear. Alarms arebattery operated so thereis no risk of shock.Parents play an importantrole in helping the childarouse in response to thealarm. Because of theirchild’s decreased sleeparousal, many parents hearthe alarm before their childresponds to it. Byreminding their child what to do next - walk to thebathroom to urinate - the parent helps establish anew response. Over time, the child learns to dothis independently and sleep dry all night!

Using an alarm gives the child some control overtheir wetting, enhancing their self-esteem and socialfreedom. The average length of time required tobecome dry varies from a few weeks to a fewmonths, but treating bedwetting with an alarm candecrease the length of time they are affected byyears.

Bedwetting alarms are an effective, medication free, method to teachpermanent nighttime dryness. All bedwetting alarms are moisturesensing devices that sound an audible alarm and/or vibrate when urineis detected. There are many types of alarms to choose from. Wefeature both pad alarms and the newer wearable alarms.

Pad type alarms consist of a moisture sensing pad that lays on the bedwhich sounds in response to urine. These alarms are well suited forchildren who prefer not to have an alarm attached to the underwear.

Wearable alarms require less urine to trigger the sensor than pad alarms.The newer models of wearable alarms/sensors are very lightweight,comfortable and sensitive to a small amount of urine.
