TOMMY NORIFun and work are synonymous for this Norwegian boy, back in Bangkok after working in Phuket and Singapore, taking photos and DJing in equal measures. The movie geek, sneakers nut and music lover is down-to-earth without ever letting go of his childhood dream to go into space. http://www.facebook.com/[email protected]

JAMES GILBODY Our new kid on the blog is Bed Sheets photographer who’s been hitting the shutter for around three years. Learning his trade in the UK, he quickly made a name for him-self on the UK music scene and became an established regular at the front of shows up and down the country. Inspired by late night caffeine runs, climbing cranes, urban playgrounds and a passion for music, James decided to capture everything he loved so he could share it with the world.www.kindoffamiliar.tumblr.com + www.JamesGilbody.co.uk

CONTRIBUTORS..........................................................................................................................................

ERICA CAMPBELLWith a love of all things that add colour to life – fashion, music, art – Erica has used writ-ing to share the beauty around her. After a short stint in advertising, this vegetarian, ex-Irish dancer landed in Bangkok. When she’s not learning Thai or studying for her master’s degree, she’s writing here: http://ericainthailand.blogspot.com [email protected]

VICTORIA KIRKWOODA last-minute flight from Sydney to a funeral in London led to Victoria’s first unplanned stopover in Thailand and since then she’s found it increasingly hard to stay away. Origi-nally a struggling artist, her work as a massage therapist and yoga teacher eventually led to a fascination with Chinese medicine and a degree in acupuncture. In her new column for Bed Sheets she creates essential blends to help you tweak the ups and downs of daily life or just smell and feel special and different.

KIND OF FAMILIAR [ JAMES GILBODY ]

..........................................................................................................................................

Peap Tarr & Lisa Mam.Peap Tarr & Lisa Mam are two brilliant Cam-bodian-based street artists that have been making waves in and around Asia with their crew, 727. Deep in the heart of Phnom Penh Peap and Lisa are working on an ongoing project with ‘Le Biz’ boutique hotel. They’re painting it from the ground floor up along with Singaporean street artist Sheryo Ang and New Zealand’s no.1 street artist Tanja Jade Aka Misery. If you’re going to be in Phnom Penh, head down to the Le Biz Hotel to have a closer look at their dramatic designs.

http://lisamam727.tumblr.com/http://peaptarrone.tumblr.com/http://lebizhotel.com/

Peap Tarr is a New Zealand-born graffiti artist from Auckland City where his unique style was cultivated. Peap’s Cambodian mother and New Zealand father were a huge influence on the way he developed his style of blending Khmer, Polynesian, Irish and New Zealand styles.Peap recently moved back to Southeast Asia and is now based in Cambodia where he’s been doing various projects including custom painting on Piaggio Liberty motorbikes in Vietnam with fellow artist Tanja Jade aka Misery, Finsta from Sweden and also local Vietnamese artist Tuan Andrews from the art collective ‘Propeller Group’.

Lisa Mam is a Cambodian-born and bred street artist. Aside from her exceptional work, what makes her unique is the fact that she’s the only female Cambodian street artist to date but she hopes that will change soon and more girls and guys in Cambodia will be influenced by her art and follow in her footsteps. Lisa has worked closely with Peap on several projects, both commercial and also humanitarian in nature.14 15

ONE NIGHT IN... [ by Champion Sound’s Mainman Dave Mil l igan ]

..........................................................................................................................................

FLY Hong Kong

What should I know before I go?   Fly is by far my favourite venue in Hong Kong. It has an excellent music policy, awesome decor, fantastic sound and light-ing and wonderful staff. It offers a quality alternative to the over-the-top show-offy vibe in a lot of other HK nightspots. All of the artists we look after for the region absolutely love playing there.

Who’s going to get me on the guestlist?   It's operated by the Buzz group. They oper-ate several high-end outlets in Hong Kong, most notably the incredibly popular night-club Volar and the superb bar/restaurant, Lily & Bloom (which is an absolute must for eats when visiting Hong Kong!).  What should I wear?Stylish, but not snooty. Everyone dresses well in Hong Kong - Fly is more relaxed than other high-end venues, but make a little effort, please!

What time should I make my entrance?Things tend to get going around midnight.

What’s the music? Superb residents Ryan Ashton (house/ techno/electro) and Yves (superb female DJ who plays a real party rocking mix of quality old to new stuff), as well as a string of superb international guests; Skream and Benga, Krafty Kuts, Goldie, Stanton Warriors and Benji Boko to name but a few. Who should I look out for?  A lot of HK and regional celebrities who are perhaps tired of the OTT show-offy thing that HK is known for. Where it is & what time does it close? G/F, 24-30 Ice House St, Central, Hong Kong, Hong KongOpen until very late! What else   should  we know ? Not only is Fly my favourite club in HK, it's easily one of the top five in Asia and definitly one of my personal favouites in the world... and believe me I've been to a lot! http://www.clubfly.com.hk/Twitter: FlyHongKong

You’re British/Japanese. Which of the two cul-tures are you most drawn to?I was born in London so I'm definitely a Lon-don girl, but I'm totally drawn to Japan and its culture. I love the place. I visit Osaka regu-larly where my mother's side of the family is from. I grew up speaking Japanese and Eng-lish so when I'm in Japan I feel totally at home too. I'm lucky to have always had the best of both worlds culturally. How come you started producing so young?I guess it was just my passion for music. I grew up playing a few instruments such as guitar, cello and drums so that trained my ear from a young age. I was really into hip hop and wanted to make beats so I started using basic software to record loops and messed around with melodies and guitar riffs. When I was 15 I attended a free summer course for music production (another great thing about growing up in London). That was my first step and I just took it from there.

Do you have any role models or people that have influenced you?For me, anyone that has big dreams and makes them a reality is a true inspiration. It doesn't matter who you are, if you have the right mentality you'll get to where you want to be. You’ve graced the covers of the UK’s best dance magazines, been played on the biggest radio stations and rocked massive crowds worldwide but if you were to chose one mo-ment that gave you the biggest buzz what would it be?It's hard to say because so much happened last year and all of it gave me a massive buzz. The first time I played a 3,000 capacity show was the first time I realised how many people were actually rooting for me. That was an amazing feeling. To see and feel the energy of that many people getting lost in my music was really an experience.

You write, arrange, perform, produce, mix and sometimes you even do the designs for your sleeves. Is that because you’re a perfec-tionist?No, not really. I just like being creative. You’ve remixed a very diverse range of artists from Gorillaz to Groove Armada. If you could remix any track, past or present, what would it be and why?Hmm.. any Portishead track would be great to remix. It would be great to work with Beth Gibbons' voice. What are you working on at the moment?I'm just finishing the final few tracks for my album which I'm super excited about. It's my chance to really show people what I'm about and it's very personal. It might not be what everyone is expecting but for me it will be my most important and special release to date. It's nothing club based. It's all pretty emo-tional music.

What track do you love playing out in clubs at the moment?Dense and Pika - 3 Day Break What’s the best rule you have ever broken? There are lots!

Have you visited Thailand before? No I haven't, but I'm looking forward to coming in March. I absolutely love Thai food so I'm sure I'll be happy there :)

Is there anything that you can’t eat?Liquorice and marzipan.

Sukie Kamol Sukosol Clappchanged the blueprint for the Thai music scene when he formed his record label Bakery Music

in the mid 90s and went on to launch the careers of legends like Modern Dog and Joey Boy. In 2007 he changed gear, left the music business and starred in his own TV travel show which

followed his journeys around Southeast Asia on a motorcycle.

“Travelling on a motorcycle with limited space I knew I needed something small, and being a novice I didn’t want to get an expensive camera so I started off with a cheap point-and-shoot

digicam. Now I’m using a Canon S90; still small but highly effective.” Sukie

SNIFF THIS..........................................................................................................................................

“It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink” went the amusing 1959 Leiber and Stoller song, but actually it’s Chanel No. 5 I think of if asked to equate scent and love; romantic and sexual love as opposed to friendship and goodwill to all. Chanel believed women should wear perfume wherever they hoped to be kissed, and conceived of this iconic perfume in the 1920s. It is still one of the world’s most popular scents selling a bottle every 30 seconds. So, in these difficult financial times, could I indulge in a little perfume plagiarism and copy it with natural plant essences? Unfortunately the answer is not really, and it wouldn’t be any cheaper than the original, nor would it last as long.

The grandmother of Chanel No. 5 was Cologne No. 1 developed for Tzarina Alexandra of Russia which was later developed into another blend intended to celebrate the 300th year of the Romanoff dynasty. Both perfumes contained a lot of rose and jasmine, some of the most expensive scents in the world. This is because they come from flowers. It takes 30 roses to make one drop of rose essence. Another expensive floral, orange blossom, was also added to Chanel No. 5, and it’s base note sandalwood has always been costly as it takes so long to grow and is now an endangered species due to over harvesting. So recreating this opulent scent would be pricy. You would also need to employ a chemist as its intensity and longevity come from the use of aldehydes-organic substances which boost the scent.

Chanel No.5 sold consistently through the great depression and World War 2 and the tiniest bottle is still selling like hotcakes at over $100 a quarter ounce. Sales of luxury goods have not been destroyed by the recent and ongoing world recession. One reason for this is because the rich get richer or retain their wealth while those below are squeezed. With its elegant pack-aging and cachet-filled history you simply can’t recreate this luxurious love potion.

The best beverages for heating things up:

Absinthe – when those Bohemian artists weren’t painting or cutting off their ears, what do you think they were doing? Benedictine – a herbal liqueur whose recipe is guarded in secrecy. Order it in a snifter or as one of the key ingredients in a Singapore Sling.

Chili Cocktail – causing the same symptoms that occur during sex – sweating, increased circulation, and a faster heartbeat, chilies will get you going. A tom yam martini should do the trick.

Sambuca and coffee – both aphrodisiacs, the combo of these two ingredients is like liquid Viagra. Known as a “Devil’s Kiss,” (sambuca with coffee or coffee beans), liquorice or aniseed- smelling ingredients are believed to significantly increase penile blood flow.

Chocolate Martini – chocolate contains the same brain chemicals associated with love and euphoria, but don’t get carried away as you’ll also be racking up the calories.

Red Wine – spruced up with a little spice (ginger, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, and sugar), is known as Hippocras aphrodisiac. Recommended by French authors everywhere.

Stout – it might come as a bit of a surprise that any beer would be on this list, but according to Michael Jackson’s beer companion, stout is perceived as being an aphrodisiac in several countries.

Yaa Dong Lao (alcohol medicine, yaa dong for short) - is a light brown beverage made with a secretive blend of Thai herbs and whisky. Increased sexual performance is rumoured after imbibing; with names like ‘Moaning Mistress’ and ‘Always Hungry,’ the rumour that yaa dong can even “make a monk leap over the temple wall in search of romance” stirs an interest too strong to decline.

ON THE RECORD [ Paul Bee Hampshire ]

..........................................................................................................................................

The Rolling Stones released LET IT BLEED

in December 1969. It was the band’s last

album to feature guitarist Brian Jones

and the first to feature his replacement

Mick Taylor.

The artwork was designed by Keith Rich-

ards' mate, Robert Brownjohn who was

given the working title of ‘Automatic

Changer’.

The image consists of the vinyl LP being

played by the arm of an antique phono-

graph, and a record-changer spindle supporting several items stacked on a plate

in place of a stack of records: a tape or film canister labelled Stones - Let It Bleed,

a clock face, a pizza, a tyre and a fancy iced cake topped by figurines represent-

ing the band. The cake was made by Delia Smith who would later become one

the UK’s first celebrity TV chefs. On the back cover, the cake was trashed and the

figurines had all sunk into the icing save for Brownjohn’s mate Keith who was the

only one left standing.

When the band decided to drop the ‘Automatic Changer’ title and opt for ‘Let it

Bleed’ they loved the artwork so much that they decided to stick with it.

In January 2010 the album cover was among ten chosen by the British Royal Mail

for a set of "Classic Album Covers" postage stamps.

What’s your favourite noise? It’s got to be the sound of four or ve ice cubes in a cocktail shaker along with three or four spirits and a mixer or two; then I always start to feel better. It’s a Pavlovian response thing for me. What’s your least favourite noise? This one is entirely personal and I know it doesn’t bother other people the way it bothers me. I HATE people whistling along to music in pubs and bars! I’m sure if John Lennon or Jimi Hendrix thought their songs needed a guy whistling on it, they’d have added one! (Actually John Lennon did on his ‘Jealous Guy’ song- Ed) What would you change if  we gave you the chance to change anything? After 10 years in Thailand, I'd love to see honest politicians working for the benet of their own country.  I see Thailand being left behind because of a lack of coherent, workable policies; especially concerning education.  Thai people deserve better.  What turns you on creatively?  Words. I'm a writer at heart, my dad writes short stories for Thai magazines and newspapers.  I'm his unpaid editor/proof reader.   I'm about halfway through writing my own novel; he can't wait to get his revenge.  Also when I'm watching a movie, it's always the script that res me up rather than the actors or the score. When have you never been so wrong?  I can't believe I'm telling you this, but I once signed up for muay thai lessons.  I thought I'd picked the perfect teacher – ex-monk, trained with US Marine Corps. One day he invited me to his house for dinner and then asked me to sleep with his wife, while he watched from the sidelines!  It was difcult to refuse – the man was a trained killer, but eventually I made my excuses and left, unmolested. If you could dine at Bed with two celebrities who would they be?  Is this one of those 'alive or dead people' questions?  Ok easy... I'll take Elvis Presley alive and Justin Bieber dead. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be? That would have to be Charley Brown's fajitas. I know it's a shameless plug, but we use so many fresh ingredients, I can make it taste different every time and I'd need some of our awesome margaritas, too. If someone wrote a biography about you, what should the title be? Well, I'd probably write it myself (to protect the innocent) but it would be called ‘Sorry - I Was Joking… Mostly’. How would you describe your best night out in three words? Friends, music and Bed (I'm not brown-nosing here; most of my best nights out involve Bed Supperclub at some point.) What’s the best thing about living in Thailand? Randomness. You meet so many amazing, interesting people in the oddest places.  A quiet drink on a Monday night can quickly turn into an all-night party that ends in some cool little bar you've never been to before. My New Year’s Eve nished at 10am, wearing jeans in a swimming pool drinking breakfast beers with eight strangers and two friends. What’s Thailand’s best kept secret? Part of me doesn't want to say, 'cos I like that it's a secret but Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.  The difference is, you need to sleep over the night before, wake up at 5am and see the market in the dawn mist before all the tourists get there and ruin it.  And then you can come back to Bangkok on the Grand Canal in a long-tailed boat.  It's a fantastic experience.

LOOKIN' GOOD FEELIN' GREAT [ BY PAUL HAMPSHIRE ]

..........................................................................................................................................

Aphrodisiacs - Miracle or Myth? In days gone by, many foods such as bananas, carrots and oysters that re-semble our private parts were thought to be aphrodisiacs. Legend has it that ladies' man Casanova would eat 50 raw oysters for breakfast. Some scientists claim the high D-aspartic acid and N-Methyl-D-aspartate levels in the saucy seafood increase testosterone levels but others question their findings. And before you splash out on that expensive box of Belgian chocolates this Val-entine’s Day; be aware that although chocolate has phenylethylamine and serotonin, two chemicals that light up pleasure areas in the brain, no studies have shown that chocolate increases sexual desire.

Throughout the ages, almonds have been considered a symbol of fertility. The aroma is thought to induce passion in a female. So with that in mind, here’s a quick and easy recipe for some delicious almond milk.

RAW ALMOND MILK 1 cup raw almonds (make sure they are unsalt-ed and have the skins removed)water for soaking nuts3 cups still mineral water1/2 tsp vanilla

Cover nuts in water and soak overnight. (oh Matron!)Drain the water from the almonds and discard. Blend the mineral water, almonds and dates until well blended and almost smooth.Strain the blended almond mixture using cheesecloth or other strainer. Add the vanilla and shake. Will keep in a refrigerator for three or four days.

The health benefits of almonds include fighting respiratory disorders, getting relief from consti-pation, heart disorders, diabetes and anemia.

Frequently Asked Questionsby Bed GM, Justin DunneALL ABOUT BED

..........................................................................................................................................

I didn’t know that you guys had a restaurant. I thought that you were only a club.Yup, nine years later, this is still the biggest miscon-ception that we have. Since the beginning (2002) we have always had the restaurant, but it often and unfortunately, stands in the shadow of the club-bing aspect. We are currently offering more special dinners (wine dinners, tequila weekend dinners, etc), in an on-going effort to push the visibility of the restaurant.

What time do you close? On most nights, we are open until 2 am. However, with local approval, our busier nights usually re-main open until 3 am (at least at the time of this printing).

My taxi driver took us to Soi 26 rather than here to Soi 11. What’s up with that?Because our address is actually '26, Soi Sukhumvit 11,' many drivers/concierges incorrectly read the address and believe that we are on Soi 26 rather than Soi 11 – a difference of about one hour in traf-fic. Frustrating indeed. We always make sure that the concierges around town have the Bed Supper-club map.

How’s business?Good. Very good. We’ve been very blessed. Yes, Thailand has had some rough challenges in the past few years including the recent floods, but we have been very fortunate to miss the most brutal parts of these challenges. We chalk this up to a great loyalty base of guests and our own will-ingness to invest in creativity and changing the themes often.

How do I receive a Bed World card? Our Bed World card is given to guests strictly through word of mouth to those who have shown incredible loyalty over the years. As of late, we are granting Bed World cards only to guests that are repeat diners in the restaurant.

May I book a hen party, birthday party, office party, Christmas party at Bed?Yes, of course. We offer attractive packages for each of these items plus several more. For more in-formation, please contact junior@bedsupperclub.

How do you describe the food at Bed?Modern eclectic cuisine.

Why do I need an ID? Why are you so strict? From the Foreign and Commonwealth website here in Thailand: By law, you must carry your pass-port with you at all times in Thailand. Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to pro-duce their passport. Although this is rare, because we are a very high profile venue, the local authori-ties do keep a very close eye on us. Thus, we ask all guests to carry an official, government issued ID – a good copy of your passport is fine.

I heard that you changed your menu – is this true?It is. For the past 10 years, Sun-Thurs, we offered a three-course set menu. As of Feb, 2011, we offer a menu that is no longer restricted by a set, but is much more flexible (a la carte) to give our guests greater freedom when ordering. We also offer half -size food portions and the kitchen is open longer.

I would like to buy some Bed merchandise, Do you have anything I can buy?We do. Tons. We sell several T-shirts, CDs, books, umbrellas, Champagne flutes, shot glasses, and more. Please ask any staff to assist.

If I wanted more information on what’s going on at Bed, what would you suggest? Please make sure that you follow us on Twitter and on facebook. @bedsupperclub (Twitter)https://www.facebook.com/#!/bedsupper-clubfanpage
