Greetings and welcome to this our ‘New York’ issue! We decided to ask our cover star JAY MONTONN to be the first subject of our new ARTIFICIAL EYE feature, where each issue we ask someone who’s not a photographer to share some wonderful photographs that they have taken. We also went over to NY to interview people like EDWARD MAPPLETHORPE, BAD GIRLFRIEND and GENESIS BERYER P-ORRIDGE. Then on the way back to Bangkok we stopped off in London to catch up with the NY superstar DJ LARRY TEE. Plus we also gave our resident aroma therapist the difficult task of coming up with a balm that captures the essence of New York. Instead of going for the obvious choice of a swanky NY boutique hotel or the much written about Chelsea Hotel for our BED HOPPING review we went upstate to show that there’s more to NY state that the Big Apple. Closer to home we also have the latest what’s happening in Bangkok’s most happening place to eat, dance and be seen.

Let's leave the final word on NY to jazz legend Duke Ellington, ‘New York is a place where the rich walk, the poor drive cadillacs, and beggars die of malnutrition with thousands of dollars hidden in their mattresses. ‘

VICTORIA KIRKWOODA last-minute flight from Sydney to a funeral in London led to Victoria’s first unplanned stopover in Thailand and since then she’s found it increasingly hard to stay away. Originally a struggling artist, her work as a massage therapist and yoga teacher eventually led to a fascination with Chinese medicine and a degree in acupuncture. In her new column for Bed Sheets she creates essential blends to help you tweak the ups and downs of daily life or just smell and feel special and different.

RUPERT JAMES Rupert James has written ads for superbrands like Heineken and Nokia, directed music promos for the likes of Placebo and Katsue and has shown multimedia art at the Sydney Biennale and the 798 Art Festival in Beijing. This spring he is due to have his design work featured in Wallpaper*. Rupert appears with his blog: 'The Human Wry'[email protected] @ wry_eyes

JAMES GILBODYJames Gilbody has been hitting the shutter for around three years, learning his trade in the UK. He quickly made a name for himself on the UK music scene and became a regular at the front of shows up and down the country. Inspired by late night caffeine runs, climbing cranes, urban playgrounds and a passion for music, James decided to capture everything he loved so he could share it with the world. Now residing in Bangkok, he fully intends to leave his stamp on this city.www.JamesGilbody.co.uk - [email protected]

ASHLEY SIMCOXAlways having loved to keep memories through words rather than photos, Ashley writes about art, music, fashion, and travel -- all the while hoping to still have enough milk money for the next day. TOMMY NORIFun and work is synonymous for this Norwegian boy, back in Bangkok after working in Phuket and Singapore, taking photos and DJing in equal measures. The movie geek, sneakers nut and music lover is down-to-earth without ever letting go of his childhood dream to go into space. http://www.facebook.com/[email protected]

MONTONN (JAY) JIRA One of Thailand’s most gifted artists; he’s also one the sweetest! As well as his own remarkable musical endeavours and his fantastic Katsue and PrahJaoJord collaborations with Joni An-war, Jay somehow finds time to not only produce hit bands like Slot Machine but also does pumping remixes for international acts like Placebo and Keane. As if that’s not enough, you’ll also find him acting on the big screen, DJ-ing and running his own record company. In fact, the only thing we’ve never seen him do is sleep! For this issue, as well as gracing our cover, Jay also shared with us a selection of his New York photographs – yes he takes great pictures too !!www.montonn.com - www.twitter.com/montonnjira - www.facebook.com/jaymontonnjira

INTERVIEW [ Words by Paul Bee Hampshire ]

..........................................................................................................................................

Bad Girlfriend hail from Brooklyn and play garagey, upbeat stomp-rock with lots of reverb and lots of attitude. The band’s sultry singer Brianna told Bed Sheets what makes a Bad Girlfriend tick.

So tell us about Bad Girlfriend. We’re an all girl band from NY. We play beat-heavy rock and roll music with lots of melody.

What inspires you?Everything! I think no matter what genre, if a song is well written it can completely change your state of being. We love all kinds of music from Ravi Shankar to Wire to the Cramps, etc.

What inspired the name Bad Girlfriend ?Unfortunately it was inspired by one of our close friends who had a particularly bad girlfriend. Fortunately he has a new one and she's awesome. What do you sing about? Most of our songs are love songs in one way or another. I think love and hate are the easiest emotions to put to music. And we are lovers not fighters. Why should Bad Girlfriend be massive?Well I personally think that the girls I play with are the foxiest gals around, but also sick musicians. And the fact that we all really love each other comes through in the music. Complete collaboration equals awesome.

Who's the baddest girlfriend in the band and why?We are all nightmares! Tantrums, high maintenance, the works.

This is our New York issue.. What's good about New York City?New York is the best. It's all extremes and completely overwhelming, yet addictive. Anywhere you go you can happen on something amazing. And 24 hour deli's can't be beat.

Where can we hear and download your music?badgirlfriend.bandcamp.com36

Page 26: Bed Sheets #37

What’s the rate per night? Very reasonable considering the house sleeps nine people: $600 per night, with a two-night minimum stay.

How’s the restaurant? Self catering, so it’s up to you but the kitchen is kitted with everything you need to cook for around nine people.

Where is it? Route 82Salt Point. Nestled in the heart of Dutchess County, New York State, the Salvato Mill offers a relaxed retreat from city life.

What’s the history?Steeped in history, the mill can be traced back to a land deed from 1749. Originally a cotton mill it was converted into a cider mill with 2½-foot–thick walls in 1913. More recently it was lovingly restored by an architect and his interior designer wife and then passed on to their daughter.

BED HOPPING

THE SALVATO MILLNEW YORKThe Salvato Mill is a striking historic property, where mid-century modern meets rustic charm.

..........................................................................................................................................

38

Page 27: Bed Sheets #37

So tell us more about the rooms. In sharp contrast to its meticulously detailed restoration which has preserved the mill’s original charm, it also boasts all the mod cons that us city dwellers now take for granted such as high-speed wireless internet, TV/DVD/basic cable and a stereo with iPod connection. The fact that the current owner is a prop stylist/ artist from Manhattan is omnipresent: from the stylish imported salt and pepper pots to the Eames chair in the living room.

One of the four bedrooms has a bathroom ensuite and all have comfy beds with fresh linen.

What’s in the neighbourhood? The immediate surroundings are quite rural, so trees and nature. We spotted deer during our stay! The house is a quick 10 minute drive to quaint Millbrook, town or a 30 minute drive to historic Rhinebeck, NY.

So tell me again, why should I stay here? Great antiquing and thrifting at the nearby stores; to check out the Dutchess County Wine Trail or the nearby Culinary Institute of America; canoeing, hiking, fishing, foraging.

Not suitable for: People who are looking for more of a hotelexperience; 24hr party people; nature haters;Prissy people - you know who you are.

Come for: To get away from it al; to fall asleep to the sound of water rushing beyond your window; a romantic getaway with your favourite person or people; a mellow weekend with friends.

Page 29: Bed Sheets #37

At what age did you start dancing? When I was a small child, I couldn’t listen to music without moving to the beat! But I really got into dancing in high school, my idol was Michael Jackson, he had such cool moves. I became a professional dancer when I was 20 years old.

Where’s your favourite place to dance in Bangkok?

Anywhere there is music that I like! Especially studios with mirrors. As for night clubs, I prefer Bed Supperclub

of course, Tuesdays are best, I really love DJay Buddha’s music, when he spins I can dance all

night. What’s your most embarrassing dance story?Too many to mention, once I had to do a show wearing really high stilettos and my heel fell off in the middle of the show but I continued dancing – as they say, ‘the show must go on’ and I don’t think the audience even noticed. What’s the hardest thing about teaching dance? These days there are so many different dance

styles that you have to demonstrate to your students. Dancers have to have the same basic moves but dif-

ferent specialties. Dance is all about emotion. So what are you up to at the moment? As well as teaching, I’m working as a stuntwoman, professional dancer and model. I’m also a singer; my latest single is called “Up to You”. I’ve also written a few songs for the Thai epic movie ‘Naraesuan’ and I’m also working on a TV show for

Channel 3. Plus I recently came third in 'The World for Taekwondo.'

Where are you teaching now?

At California WOW teaching Hot Liquid.

BILL CUNNINGHAMNEW YORK

Manhattan’s streets are one big catwalk for the Big Apple’s most adorable fashion anthropologist.

Cast : Bill CunninghamAnna Wintour Michael KorsEditta Sherman

Released : 2011

What’s the story? The movie’s a poignant portrait of a devoted artist, whose unassuming manner is juxtaposed against the pouting fashionistas and power brokers that reign supreme over the

New York fashion scene. For over 40 years, come rain or shine, Bill Cunningham has been passionately riding around the streets of New York City on his bicycle documenting fashion trends for the New York Times. When the sun goes down he shoots the city’s glitzy nightlife for the paper’s ‘Evening Hours’ photo column. Using his own lo-fi method, the movie lifts the veil and offers a peek at Cunningham's humble yet eccentric character and his weird and wonderful social circle.

Film FactsWhen Women’s Wear Daily editors changed the meaning of one of his photo layouts – from a celebration of ordinary women wearing adaptations of runway looks to a mockery of them he resigned in protest.

Cunningham was the only press photographer invited to Brooke Astor's 100th birthday.

In 2008, Bill was awarded the title Officier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

Quotes Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour: “We all dress for Bill. It's one snap, two snaps, or he ignores you, which is death."

When a magazine that Bill was working with was taken over by Condé Nast, Bill wouldn't cash his cheque. "If you don't take money, they can't tell you what to do, kid!, That's the key to the whole thing: Don't! Touch! Money!"

EDWARD MAPPLETHORPE

INTERVIEW [ Words by Paul Bee Hampshire ]

..........................................................................................................................................

Edward Mapplethorpe, whose career began in 1982 as his brother Robert’s studio assistant, has finally emerged as an extraordinary artist in his own right.

In your latest work ‘Variations’, you express yourself with photogams. Was this a deliberate attempt to do away with the camera?I have been creating work without cameras since the year 2000. It was around that time that I began to realise that my interest in the photographic process had more to do with the darkroom than the actual taking of pictures. By then I had many years of printing experience and decided to explore the lab’s potential as the main creative tool. In addition, I was exposing myself to other creative mediums and being drawn more and more to painting and conceptual installations.

Could you take us through the process you em-ploy to create your works? The Variations were created with a chemical pro-cess that I read about in a 1990 issue of Scientific American magazine. Basically it explained how various chemicals in different dilutions interact differently with the silver particles in photo-graphic paper. This phenomenon, along with prolonged exposure to light during the process, results in the myriad of tonal shifts you see on each piece. But it is my own devised applications and hand gestures that create their movement.

Your inspiration was in part the classical pianist Glenn Gould and his iconoclastic re-interpretation of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach. What excited you about his work?At the precise time I began working on this new series I was introduced to Glenn Gould through a documentary by filmmakers Michele Hozer and Peter Raymont titled, Genius Within. I was first struck by the fact that I had never really known about the man. How had he fallen off my radar? And then I became extremely taken by his life’s story and talent. I immediately got both of his Bach Goldberg Variations recordings and began listening to them as I made my new work. The music became my inspiration and would lead me as my hands worked over each piece. The title for the exhibition just made sense since my process involved so many variations.

Your gallery compared your work to the action paintings by Jackson Pollock but we see more of William Burroughs and Brion Gysin in there. How do you feel about such comparisons? I can only be flattered by such comparisons. I particularly like Brion Gysin’s calligraphic works and I am sure you can find the influence but like everyone, artists are the sum of many parts. And how wonderful a concept this is. It is how our sprits continue into the future.

50

Page 39: Bed Sheets #37

Did you read Patti Smith’s new book ‘Just Kids’ , about her relationship with New York and your brother Robert? I was privileged to receive one of the first copies before it was publicly released. I knew Patti was working on the book for years and had little doubt that it would be a beautiful book but I don’t think any of us had any idea it would be this beautiful. I was 10 years old when Robert first brought Patti home to meet my parents and I knew from that first day that they were special together. That day fueled my creative side that remains with me till this day.

In addition to the book being a story about them and their struggle with identity, it is a New York story. A story of a New York that was gone before I arrived onto the scene. This is why I can’t be too sad missing the city I loved. It happens to every generation.

The Variations by Edward Mapplethorpe is currently on show at the Foley Gallery NYC until June 18th

New York City has been given a major facelift since you first moved there in the late 80s. How do you feel about the changes?I have become more and more nostalgic as I have aged so naturally I miss the city of my 20s. There was an underground beauty that is gone and sorely missed by people my age and older. The soul of the city has changed with the deluge of people over the past 30 years. It’s a cleaner city but less interesting. But then again New York was built on the concept of change. It continues to live up to its name.

LARRY TEE

LONDON

NEW YORK

VERSUS [ Words by Paul Bee Hampshire ]

..........................................................................................................................................

LARRY TEE

The man who trademarked Electroclash as a style of music lived in New York for most of the 90s and 00s, Larry was instrumental in launching the careers of such artists as RuPaul, Scissor Sisters, Fischerspooner and Peaches. A regular at Party Monster Michael Alig’s ‘Disco 2000’ club night at the Limelight, he also hosted the ‘Hot Body Contest’ there. In 2010 he collaborated with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton and Amanda Lepore to produce Hilton's first music track and also remixed Lady GaGa and La Roux. Larry recently relocated to London where he now presents and plays at Shabba Dabba Da with the lovely Daniel Lismore. He also produces the fabulous Carnage magazine.

London Calling! 1. Crazy fashion: London’s St Martins College of Art and Design provides the fashion inspiration for US designers.

2. The royals: Queen Elizabeth II is older than Obama, our closest thing to royalty.

3. Public health care: people need it and people love it here.

4. It's legal to dance in bars. In New York City, clubs have become like morgues because venues need dance licences.

5. Kylie Minogue: America doesn’t know what it's missing in the Minogue sisters

52

Page 41: Bed Sheets #37

LARRY TEEGENESIS BREYER

P-ORRIDGE

GENESIS BREYER P-ORRIDGE - is arguably one of the most important icons of alterna-tive culture of the latter quarter of the 20th Century and beyond.

Genesis spent most of the 70s and 80s in London where he/she famously co-orches-trated Prostitution, a controversial exhibition at the ICA that ultimately caused a Parliament member to condemn Genesis and his cohorts as "wreckers of civilisation." Genesis also formed the English avant-garde music and visual arts groups Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. In the 90s Genesis, along with his life partner Lady Jaye, relocated to New York City and began an experiment in body modification aimed at creating one pandrogynous being. The project included having cosmetic surgeries that blur the lines between their sexes and bring them nearer to being one physically. Sadly his soulmate passed away in 2007 but the project continues. He/she now lives in Manhatten’s Lower East Side.

Lets Hear it for NEW YORK!1. The absence of ‘Lad’ culture and all that goes with it.

2. NYC is truly a 24-hour city. Public transport never stops, car services run 24/7 as do all kinds of restaurants, clubs, bars, diners. New York is a city for insomniacs!

3. You can get anything, ANYTHING, delivered to your door. From food and drinks to laundry, sexual favours and flavours and all the illegal highs and lows you might desire!

4. We love the cosmopolitan nature of New York. There are people from every single country on earth living here, and people of all religious persuasions yet we all get along fine without any racism or prejudice interfering.

5. Hell's Angels! Their East Coast HQ is in the East Village and the sound and sight of them roaring away on a ‘run’ is fabulously butch and inspiring. Our new look is borrowed from them.

53

Page 42: Bed Sheets #37

The New York in my memory is quite a dark place; of art deco buildings, small smoky bars, the subway, Ellis Island and the Long Island serial killers. Of Diane Arbus and Weegee photographs, jazz singers with gardenias in their hair and violets in their furs, pastrami and gherkin on rye. So how does it smell? God only knows but in trying to find out I came up with this delicious and useful balm.

You can make your own version of Vicks Vapour Rub or Tiger Balm by mixing oils at about 5 - 20 % (depending on use and skin sensitivity) in any unscented lipophilic base. Little tins of Vaseline or Shea Butter are ideal. Just make your blend, lightly warm the tin to melt the base ingredi-ent, then mix. The following blend can be used as a perfume, on dry chapped hands and feet, on the chest for coughs and colds, or as a muscle rub.

BenzoinHas a wonderful creamy vanilla scent and is an important ingredient in incense production. It is very warming and valued as a treatment for any respiratory or skin condition. Emotionally it creates a comforting buffer zone.

Black PepperIs an ancient and revered spice that was even accepted as a currency in the Middle Ages. Warming, stimulating, and painkilling, this oil is great for colds and ‘flus and often included in blends for tight achy muscles.

Clove BudPomanders were made of cloves during the Renaissance to protect from plague and it is a strong antiseptic. It is also a painkiller and can be applied directly to a toothache. Cinnamon has similar properties and a slightly sweeter smell you may prefer.

VetiverExtensively used in Asian traditional medicine, Vetiver has a dark rich earthy smell. It may be familiar as it is a common base for ‘woody’ perfumes. It is very grounding and relaxing for emotional problems and a tonic for any kind of burnout.

Many conflicting stories have surfaced about who really created the Waldorf salad. So we will go with the most told story, which is that along with ‘eggs benedict’ it is was first made in New York City by the Waldorf’s maître d'hôtel, Ocar Tschirky between 1893 and 1896.

In the cookbook by 'Oscar of the Waldorf' the original recipe contained only apples, celery and mayonnaise. Chopped walnuts later became an integral part of the dish. Waldorf salad is usually served on top of a bed of lettuce.

For an even healthier option replace the traditional mayonnaise with non-fat Greek yoghurt.

Here are some of the health benefits of this scrumptious salad:

Walnuts - Walnuts contain Omega 3 and 6, known as 'essential fatty acids', or EFAs because our body cannot make these fats itself and therefore we must get them from our diet.

Raisins - are one of the top sources of the trace mineral, boron, which is critical for our health. One area is good bone health. Women especially need boron to help against osteo-porosis (bone softening). Phenols' antioxidant properties help prevent oxygen-based damage to cells in the body.

Apples - In addition to vitamin C, apples provide other antioxidants in malic acid which is im-portant for boosting immunity, maintaining oral health, reducing the risk of poisoning from a build-up of toxic metals and promoting smoother and firmer skin.

Celery - Celery is an excellent source of vitamin C, a vitamin that helps to support the immune system. It also contains active compounds called phthalides, which can help relax the muscles around arteries and help reduce high blood pressure.

Greek yoghurt - probiotics (friendly bacteria).

Recent studies suggest that coffee could have several health benefits and coffee could reduce the risk of several serious ailments such as diabetes, heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver.

Researchers have found strong evidence that coffee contains antioxidants that help control the cell damage that can contribute to the development of the disease. It is also a source

of chlorogenic acid, which has been shown in animal experiments to reduce glucose concentrations.

The report, which combined statistical data from many studies revealed that people who drank four to six cups of coffee a day had a 28 percent reduced risk compared with people who drank two or fewer. Those who drank more than six had a 35 percent risk reduction.

Researchers also stated that a typical serving of coffee contains more antioxidants than typical servings of grape juice, blueberries, raspberries and oranges. That said, many experts deem that coffee drinking can have harmful health consequences such as decreasing blood flow to the heart particularly during exercise at high altitudes.

1- It’s a great way to watch your weight. Climbing just two flights of stairs every day could result in a loss of 2.7kg per year. Six flights a day could help you trim over 8 kilos. 2- Physical activities like stair climbing are a great way to cope with job-related stress3- Scientists say that people who take the stairs regularly lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases and therefore can live longer, healthier lives. 4- Use your body’s energy not the planet's. Stair climbing is also good for the environment and helps prevent global warming. 5- Taking the stairs burns more calories per minute than most other forms of physical activity.

DJ Orawan

INTERVIEW..........................................................................................................................................

What style do you play when you spin at Bed ?My style’s changed a lot over the years and become much more diverse. When I spin at Bed, it really depends on the night and the international DJ that I’m playing with. On Fridays my set is mostly soulful deep-house. On other nights I play everything from future garage to electro, dubstep and of course, drum and bass.

What music do you play at home? I love days when I have time to chill at home and play music, usually it's old school hip hop, nu jazz and trip hop. But if I’m doing a full on spring clean then it’s got to be drum and bass and dubstep!

What’s your track of the month? I am into the UK funky and garage sounds at the moment, so my track of the month would have to be ‘Lights On' by Katy B feat. Ms. Dynamite.

What song best sums you up? I started my career as a drum and bass DJ so the song would have to be from that genre, so I will go for ‘When I Return’ by Shapshifter because it identifies me as a woman who knows what she wants and always follows her dreams.

DJ Orawan spins every Friday night at Bed and regularly opens for our international artists.86

FOOL'S GOLD is undoubtedly the label to look out for when it comes to the cooler side of dance music today. Founded by DJ A Trak (who won the world DMC DJ championship at just 15 years old back in the mid 90s) - is also one half of DUCK SAUCE - responsible for 2010's massive BARBRA STREISAND record. A Trak himself will be performing, as will one of the label's most ground-breaking artists, CONGOROCK. This is set to be one of our biggest nights of 2011 - you'd be a FOOL to miss it!

Quite possibly the coolest DJ on the planet right now, Diplo is without doubt the 'it boy' of electronic music right now. As well as being one half of the mighty 'Major Lazer' project, Diplo is also a huge name in his own right & his label, Mad Decent, is the label to check for innovative dance music

I didn’t know that you guys had a restaurant – I thought that you were only a club.Yup, nine years later and this is still the biggest misconception about us. Since we opened in 2002, we’ve always had the restaurant but, it often unfortunately, stands in the shadow of the bar/club. In an on-going effort to push the restaurant’s visibility, we are offering more special dinners (wine dinners, tequila weekend dinners, etc).

What time do you close? On most nights, we are open until 2 am. However, with local approval, our busier nights usually remain open until 3 am (at least at the time of this printing).

My taxi driver took us to Soi 26 rather than here to Soi 11. What’s up with that?Because our address is actually “26, Soi Sukhumvit 11,” many drivers/concierges incorrectly read the address and believe that we are on Soi 26 rather than Soi 11 – a difference of about one hour in traffic. Frustrating indeed. We always make sure that the concierges around town have the Bed Supperclub map.

Why are your wines so damn expensive? Yes, this is very unfortunate. Due to the 400% tax on both foreign and local wines (geared in part to protect the consumption of local Thai beverages), our prices are forced to reflect this tragedy.

How’s business?Good. Very good. We’ve been very blessed. Yes, Thailand has had some rough challenges in the past few years, but we have been very fortunate to miss the most brutal parts of these challenges. We chalk this up to a great loyalty base of guests and our own willingness to invest in creativity and changing the themes often.

On the eve of local elections, why are you not allowed to sell alcohol? As part of a police-enforced request, “Sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks is prohibited in the constituency from 6 pm on Saturday to midnight of Sunday, and police will strictly enforce the law.” This ban is to ensure sobriety (in the public).

Why do I need an ID? Why are you so strict? From the Foreign and Commonwealth website here in Thailand: "By law, you must carry your passport with you at all times in Thailand. Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport." Although this is rare, because we are a very high profile venue, the local authorities do keep a very close eye on us. Thus, we ask all guests to carry an official, government-issued ID – a good copy of your passport is fine.

How do I receive a Bed World Card?Bed World Card member requests are usually approved following the applicant’s third subsequent visit to our restaurant.

May I book a hen's party, birthday party, office party at Bed?Yes, of course. We offer attractive party packages. For more information, please contact [email protected] or [email protected]

I heard that you changed your menu – is this true?It is. For the past eight and a half years, Sun-Thurs, we offered a three-course set menu. As of February, 2011, we now offer a menu that is no longer restricted by a set, but is much more flexible (a la carte) to give our guests greater freedom when ordering. We also offer half sizes and the kitchen is open longer.

How do you describe the food at Bed?Modern eclectic cuisine

I would like to buy some Bed merchandise, Do you have anything I can buy?We do. Tons. We sell several T-shirts, CDs, books, umbrellas, champagne flutes, shot glasses, and more. Please ask any staff to assist.

Does Bed have any mobile apps?We do. We have both a Bed Supperclub app as well as a Bed Sheets app. Both are available from iTunes. Enjoy!
