Overview With over 5100 students, Barren County Schools is home of the tiny Trojans in

blended head-start and preschool programs to high school students prepared for careers. A

superior academic foundation provided by one of our seven elementary schools leads to BC

Middle School, where students experience learning with project-based curriculum in The

Renaissance Program and with challenging core academics & high school courses. From

there, a transition center for freshmen, Trojan Academy prepares students for rigorous

Advanced Placement, dual credit, and over 30 career pathway courses at Barren County

High School.

For non-traditional learners, BC offers visionary schools within the district with

the Phoenix Program, Barren Academy of Virtual & Extended Learning, Elementary to

Early College Magnet Programs, and alternative learning placements. Barren County Schools believe that

each student deserves the opportunity to find a passion for learning that prepares them to become productive,

work-minded citizens. Keeping with the innovation, Barren County Schools earned a $6.84 million grant to

renovate the BC Area Technology Center, in addition to the new career center & sports complex.

Barren County Schools Superintendent Bo Matthews began a journey, driving the bus both

figuratively and literally. On September 30, 2015, over 70 community members traveled to Hardin County to

see a glimpse into the future for Barren County Schools and the greater community. With vision teams in place,

with outstanding academic programs from Advanced Placement to Career & Technical Education to Fine

Arts, along with growing student populations, Barren County Schools had a need. Industry had a need.

Workforce had a need.

If necessity is the mother of invention, then the Vision Teams who created this plan could be called the

“Fairy God-Mother of Innovation.” When faced with the need to add classrooms to Barren County High

School, an additional wing could have been added. “But we chose make the most of our facility money by

creating a new space for learning that would be adjacent to the current Barren County Area Technology Center

so our students could gain the most from the collaboration of teachers and students in similar fields of study,” explained Matthews.

Industry and workforce helped drive decisions related to program improvements to thrive in the respective areas, reviewed job forecasting data to make sure

students would have a job market upon graduation, and expanded job shadowing, cooperative work placements, as well as registered apprenticeships for students. These

vision teams address curriculum, work-ethics training, and updating equipment needs to create a world class center for study. “Our students will be learning to work and

then working to learn thanks to the partnerships created with our Vision Teams,” stated Matthews.

• Make a monetary Vision Contribution – Through Barren County Education Foundation, funds can be earmarked for particular use or general program needs. With ever growing needs for consumables and innovation for the future, personal or business contributions will allow your family or business to leave a lasting legacy with a building, lab, classroom, or sports areas named in honor or memory of your family or business. These contributions can be part of monthly, annual, and/or end of life giving. This contribution will also have naming rights for the space that is sponsored; however, Barren County School names will remain a part of the BC tradition.

The paces The innovative learning spaces include four modern learning environments with instructional and lab space for Engineering & Design, Computer Sciences, Health Sciences & Culinary Arts. The space will also serve students and adults in classrooms that can also be adapted for special events. With signature picture windows from RBS Design group lead Architect Craig Thomas and Coordinator Kyle Abney, each classroom window will provide natural light and a spectacular view of the athletic complex or Trojan Campus. Built by Alliance Corporation under the management of Kenny Sutton (BCHS Class of 1994) this building will be the first site with the BC Brand. Designed by Valerie Stokes, BC V-Team member, the uniquely designed Barren County Trojan and interlocking BC will be symbols of Barren County Schools for years to come. Each new logo will be prominently displayed throughout the building and on the sports field. Created with an industrial, high-tech Barren County theme, the clean edges and hand-picked colors of burgundy and gold tones accented with grays, blacks and white will create an eco-system of professional learning and growing for students and the greater community.

Career & Technical Programs & Spaces: New Building—$500,000 and Sports Complex—$500,000

With four state of the art labs and innovative learning spaces, this building will serve as a hub of innovation. Used for football, track, and band competitions, stadium will also be connected the building to overlook the Trojan Trail entrance to Trojan Campus. With synthetic turf field and a track large enough to host regional events, this sports complex will be rivaled across the Commonwealth. The stadium will be able to seat over 200 Trojan fans in chairs, with an additional 1700 in bleachers.

Barren County Area Technology Center—$500,000 With the Work Ready Skills Initiative Grant, Career and Technical programs in this building will continue to train students and adults for the workforce or post-secondary education with state of the art equipment and a modernized facility. Students who attend these programs can earn dual credits, industry certifications, and entrance into apprenticeship programs. Lab spaces for Business, Carpentry, HVAC, Welding, Machine Tool, Electricity, Automotive, and Diesel will also be available for sponsorship for $100,000 each. Innovation & Collaboration Event Space—$100,000

The hours of operation will include daytime programming for student instruction. The community, employers, and postsecondary partners will utilize the facilities to offer programming for adult learning during evenings and other appropriate times. These spaces will be utilized for Community Education courses, post-secondary trainings in addition to special events.

Engineering & Design Lab—$100,000

With VEX & training Robotic systems, 3-D printers, and two VEX Robotics competition rings, one might enter the lab space and mistake it for a “Battlebot” television set, but in reality these students are solving real-world problems with robotics and design layouts for projects used within the community.

Project Lead The Way and Computer Aided Design Lab—$100,000

Students will get to experience a hybrid pathway to prepare any aspiring engineer or engineering technician as they complete PLTW classes and then specialize in industrial, mechanical, architectural, civil, electrical, or computer science engineering programs.

Classroom Learning Space—$10,000 each

Additional classroom spaces will allow for student coursework in traditional academic subjects like English, math, science or social studies courses as needed for student graduation requirements, preparing students for all careers.

Health Sciences Lab—$100,000

Equipped with the latest technology for skilled care, these learning spaces will mimic a health facility with a modern science lab to enable students to practice research skills and job skills for any health related field. By combining the efforts of our nationally recognized PLTW Biomedical Program and ATC Health Sciences coursework, students who experience this rigorous coursework can train for medical school in addition to careers in nursing, phlebotomy, and more.

Culinary Arts Lab—$100,000

With a long-standing and successful culinary arts program for Barren County High School, the new lab will allow for students to practice their career skills with commercial grade equipment and event space for practicing hospitality skills. Equipped spaces for sweet and savory cooking stations, students can practice garde manger, sautéing, baking, garnishing, and customer service while also earning National ServSafe Certification. Working with local post-secondary institutions, students will be able to transition to further their training or enter Barren County’s 3rd highest revenue industry of hospitality and tourism.

Agriculture Facilities—Barn—$100,000 Greenhouse—$50,000

The Agricultural Education Program provides students with a complete program based on tradition, yet instilled with the most current technological advancements and practices utilized within the agricultural industry. Offering courses which fall in the Agricultural Business, Agricultural Mechanics, Animal Science, & Horticulture Pathways, the department is focused on preparing students for both a future post-secondary degree in agriculture and/or future employment in the agricultural industry. Through the agricultural facilities located on the school’s campus, students are given the opportunity to work and learn daily in fully operational settings including an agricultural mechanics shop, commercial greenhouse, diversified livestock barn, animal slaughter/meat processing workshop, and floral design laboratory.

Business Labs—$100,000

Student futures start here! Excitement, innovation, and synergy are the focal points for the business department. Barren County students will benefit from business career major opportunities in accounting, administrative support, e-commerce, management and entrepreneurship, and marketing. In newly designed classrooms, students will benefit from the collaboration of all business pathways, internship opportunities, and school-based enterprise experiences. Students can join Future Business Leaders of America to extend their business acumen outside of the school day and develop networking relationships to last a lifetime.

Computer Sciences Lab—$100,000

From coding to networking to wiring to security, Barren County Computer Science students have been on the cutting edge of technology since before society carried computers in pants pockets. Since 1999, BC students have been maintaining the district helpdesk, leading the way in computer sciences. BC tech students can repair hardware, run wire and oversee the management of the district technology. With a greater workspace, along with new coursework, students will have opportunities for apprenticeships as app and web developers along with College Board Advanced Placement coursework. Armed with hands-on helpdesk experiences, students can also pursue interests in data security, software development, networking, and much more. Stocked with devices of every kind, this learning environment is conducive to a digital-ecosystem for exploring, learning, and inventing.

As with most new buildings, numerous opportunities for naming are made available to help support the

students of Barren County Schools. Though the buildings and spaces are already constructed, the gift

related to naming will help provide state of the art learning experiences for each student at Barren County

Schools. Gifts for lab and program spaces will be used directly for the needs of the program named, and all

gifts will be passed through the Barren County Education Foundation for use to that program. Classroom

and building gifts will be used to directly service students in the corresponding schools. All cafeteria gifts will

be used to support the efforts of the smarter lunchroom practices and #BCReadsandFeeds programs to

provide meals and books for students throughout the summer months. Just as each space is unique, so will be

the impact of your gift. A permanent fixture to commemorate your gift will be added to the space your gift

supports, but the true impact will be the generations of Barren County students who will benefit from your

generosity. Please note that the school or program names will not be changed; rather the building or space

will be named in your honor. For example, Trojan Baseball Field located at Smith Athletic Complex

would be used if the Smith family made the gift for the Baseball Field.
