Hold the Beaver® Mini-Blade® tray between thumb and pointer finger.

Continue to thread handle until the thread is fully engaged and the Mini-Blade® is released from the tray clips.

Lift to remove Beaver® Mini-Blade® from tray.

Thread the Beaver® handle in a clockwise motion, onto the threaded tip.

Beaver® Safety Knives feature a specially designed, integrated retractable shield that protects the blade in procedure and handling. The Material: Silicon

The ideal blade material: pure, plentiful,and able to be fashioned into a bladewith the desired sharpness and bladedimensions. Silicon was the potentialanswer. Silicon is as abundant as dia-monds are rare, yet both are Group IVelements and close neighbors on theperiodic table. They share the samediamond-cubic crystalline structure,and thus have similar materialcharacteristics. But could silicon bemade into an ophthalmic blade?

The Process:Semiconductor Wafer Slicing

The solution lay in semiconductor manufacturing. BD’spioneering process uses silicon wafer-slicing technologyto produce a high-purity silicon blade.

The BD Atomic Edge micromanufacture process isdesigned to ensure a high degree of uniformity andconsistency. The wafer-fabrication process eliminatesthe typical grinding process used to manufacture somemetal blades.

Atomic Edge Performance

Correct, consistent and predictable inci-sion architecture is vital in an ophthalmicblade, and the first step is sharpness.BD Atomic Edge features an edge radiusof approximately 40 nm, versus 20 nmfor the typical diamond blade andapproximately 600 nm for metal.

The blade’s total shape is designed forincision control. The double-bevel designmay assist in ensuring a vertical penetra-tion. (Single-bevel blades tend to shifttrajectory.) Non-sharpened sides mini-mize the possibility of side-cutting. Thetip angle has been designed to producethe correct penetration depth, resistingover-penetration.
