Beauty is but skindeep
Ingrid van der Hoeven is a classical sculptor who cuts through modern-day challenges associated with multicultural society and contemporary issues of integration. She combines her materials, constructing statues from wood, plastic and even prawn crackers. Beauty is but skin deep presents an overview of these extraordinary sculptures. Roos van Put, editor-in-chief of Kunstbeeld, shares her vision of Van der Hoeven’s work in a contemplative essay.

The urge to gauge yourself
I first met Ingrid van der
Hoeven in 2005. I can still
remember how soon that
conversation about her
work turned to the subject
of Asia. Hardly surprising,
given the fact that we both
have our roots in the
former Dutch East Indies
as well as the Netherlands.
We were both instantly
aware of a certain affinity:
we both have a double
cultural identity, and we
both grew up between two
cultures. When I saw her
sculptures at the time,
I immediately recognised
a meeting of western and
eastern elements.
I asso ciated the curved
shapes – which are
abstracted and yet make
a figurative impression
– with a kind of landscape
you do not find in the
Netherlands. I also
discerned a certain serene
grace in the sculptures, a
characteristically Asian
type of elegance.

And, last but certainly not
least, I was struck by the
technique Ingrid van der
Hoeven uses. She uses
thin sheets of wood, which
are sawn into shape and
then worked by hand, to
create a smooth surface.
It is a traditional sculp-
tural technique, and in our
conversation Ingrid van
Hoeven told me that she
considered herself a ‘fairly
traditional artist’.
In my view, she is without
question an original
sculptor, an artist who
composes materials and
builds up sculptures using
wood, plastic or even
Indonesian prawn
crackers. Ingrid van der
Hoeven sees herself as
a sculptor who works
in a traditional way, but
who addresses current
issues relating to the
multicultural society and
integration through her
choice of subjects.
Mix
In my view, the thread that
runs through her latest
works is the urge to gauge

herself, both literally and
figuratively. Her interest
lies not so much in looking
for her personal history,
as was the case in her
earlier work as an artist;
instead, she is fascinated
by the mix of backgrounds
between east and west and
what kind of images such a
mix might produce.
Naturally, this involves a
struggle of some sort.
How can you bring east
and west together when
no clearly demarcated
definition of this mix
exists? In the modern-day
art world, she is one of a
number of artists whose
works focus on this kind of
subject matter, some of
them inspired by their
own mixed backgrounds.
In 2005, I already conduc-
ted research into the
visual styles of Dutch East
Indies artists living and
working in The Hague.1
Later, I studied the work
of more established
artists: famous names in
the Dutch and/or inter-
national art world,

including Tiong Ang, Jasper de
Beijer, Hadassah Emmerich,
Fiona Tan and Roy Villevoye.
I wrote an essay about their art
for the book that accompanied
the exhibition Beyond the Dutch
in the Centraal Museum Utrecht
(2009). In the essay, I examined
the concept of cultural ambi-
valence in relation to the works of
these artists. In researching this
subject, I allowed myself to be
guided by my own, Dutch East
Indies perspective, my plural
identity, and I asked myself what
kind of windows these gave me
for contemplating, experiencing
and interpreting these works of
art. I took a similar kind of
approach to the works of Ingrid
van der Hoeven and this led me to
discover a parallel discourse
there in relation to the above-
ment ioned artists. Similarly to
theirs, her artistic process also
involves asking questions
relating to that continuous state
of cultural ambivalence, to which
the artist tries to find an answer
in her work. Time after time,
Ingrid van der Hoeven asks
herself the same questions in
relation to that hybrid identity:
who are you, what mix of eastern
and western background, which
influences, make you into an
individual, and is the notion of
identity fixed or fluid? Central to
all these questions is the way in
which you experience identity
when you instinctively feel this
identity only forms a part of
the society and culture that
surrounds you. What do you do
with the other part? 2
The Human Figure
Central to Ingrid van der
Hoeven’s new sculptures is the
human figure. A human figure
with a hybrid identity.
A human figure that is also
modelled on Ingrid van der
Hoeven herself. Before she starts
sculpting in wood, she makes
sketches and these in turn are
created on the basis of photo-
graphs that she takes of herself in
various poses. In her explorative
approach to the human body,
she tries to capture a kind of body
language that says something

about having an iden tity
composed of two cultures.
She interrogates that
plural cultural identity in
her work and attempts to
incorporate all the
corres ponding elements
in the sculpture. Clearly
she is not setting herself
an easy task here; after all,
how do you capture
something so authentic –
and something that seems
almost impossible to
articulate – without
resorting to stereotypes?
In other words: where
does ‘nature’ end and
‘nurture’ begin?
While her earlier sculp-
tures combined abstract
and figurative elements,
her latest works are clearly
recognisable as female
figures. They are dressed
in vests and have long hair.
Ingrid van der Hoeven
finds inspiration in
various places. For
instance, she regularly
walks along a particular
street in Rotterdam, the
Kruiskade, and observes
the passers-by, who are
12

clearly the products of two
cultures. What kind of body
language do they display and
what does it say about a
person? She is also fascina-
ted by Asian magazines and
calendars that feature Asian
women: the kind of calendar
that you might find at a
Chinese restaurant, for
instance. These always
feature exceptionally
beautiful women, their
attitudes temporarily frozen
in the moment that the
photographs were taken.
Together, they combine to
form an Asian archetype.
Some of these photographs
have a natural feel, but in
others the women’s poses
can look a bit artificial.
Ingrid van der Hoeven
processes all these impres-
sions and tries to bring
them together, combining
them in a sculpture made of
plastic. This sculpture is not
directly derived from the
people who unwittingly
served as her models;
13
instead, she imitates their
poses in her studio, after which
a photograph is taken. She
undresses the pose, as it were,
reducing it to its bare essentials
and looks at it from a perspective
bordering on the mathematical,
after which the creative process
begins. She dresses her figures
minimally in order to focus on
the body language.
Archaic Postures
First, the sculptress tries to
gauge herself by observing
others. How do these people
actually move and what does
this say about those people?
Then, in the studio, she takes
the process a step further. What
does my body look like when I
adopt this or that posture? And,
how can I compress that posture
to such an extent that I am left
with a powerful body that also
says something about that plural
identity? How can you capture
that body language among the
differing elements of two
different cultures, summing it
up in a sculpted figure? She then
tests her studies by using herself,
her own identity and her own
body as a model, imitating
postures and trying to find an
archaic form that she wants
to immortalise in a sculpture.
This results in a sculpture of a
woman’s torso and head. Ingrid
van der Hoeven does not need
the rest of the body to communi-
cate what she wants to say to the
outside world. Her female figures
symbolise an icon of the Asian
type or of a person formed by a
combination of western and
eastern roots. She brings
together the reality of the street
and the fiction of the created
image, interrogating cultural
identity as such in the process.
And this way of working also
involves the artist gauging her
own identity, her own particular
mix of backgrounds and heritage.
In her latest series of works the
artist explores a new adventure.
Her recent sculptures are
complete female figures, that
appear as though they are rising
out of the earth. With this new
series, she shows great promise
for future development.
Apart from that, purely formal
considerations play a role in her
works as well. Because at heart,
Ingrid van der Hoeven is still
above all a sculptor. Not only
does she search for authentic
14

content, she also looks at
the way in which a body – or
part of a body, in this case
– fills a space. Some of the
questions she asks herself
are how the sculpture’s
mass relates to the space
surrounding it and what its
expressive power is inside
and outside the studio.
In order to inves tigate this,
she sometimes takes a
sculpture into town, to see
how the volume and
expressive power of the
sculpture influence these
surroundings. Here we see
how the urge to gauge, in
this case the works instead
of the artist herself, again
plays an important role.
Ingrid van der Hoeven keeps
up a consistent process
of measurement and
investigation, continual ly
interrogating herself and
her environment. This
results in powerful sculp-
tures, which, in their pared
down form, express much
more than what we see
in reality.

“She brings together the reality of the street and the fiction of the created image, interrogating cultural identity as such in the process”
