Covering 674 km2, Biwako (“Lake Biwa”) is Japan’s largest lake; it is also an ancient one, said to have a history that goes back 4,000,000 years. A large number of freshwater fish shops allow visitors to enjoy the local flavors.
This village has a very unique culture of water. Rain and melted snow from the Hira Mountains become underground water that bubbles up from individual springs located in local homes. The people here use this water for daily life.
The main hall at Hogon-ji Temple enshrines the goddess Benzaiten, who is said to lead followers to happiness. While there, be sure to write your prayer on a slip of paper and put it in one of the daruma dolls.
