From the Editor’s DeskFrom the Editor’s Desk Wow! Just when we think we can sit back and relax, the new season is avalanching all over us. SEBA is already receiving more requests, fliers and postings on our site than previously seen in a long while. Our efforts are starting to pay off for the communities as we grow to 12 SEBA chapters. In January SEBA held it's first Board of Directors meeting of the calendar year. Traditionally this is when we elect and appoint the officers that will serve you for the year. And this year we've got a 'cracker jack' of a team for you. The Board elected and appointed the following people to serve you and the community in 2012. Congratulations to all.

All candidates were elected for 2012 at the December meeting/election. Dickson Lester has consented/approved to be Events committee Chairman. Rebecca Lawson appointed/approved as Chairman of Education Committee.Don Simons will continue/approved as Finance Committee and Membership Committee Chairman.Dan Daniels was thanked on behalf of the organization for his efforts as Chairman of Chapters Committee 2011 and agreed to continue in same for 2012.Charlie Robinson currently chairs Publications (website) and SEBA Inventory Committee and will chair same in 21012/approved.Chairman of the Board election tabled for future meeting (to be discussed by all committee members). COB duties will fall to President until position filled.** Note by Dan Daniels: Board reserves right to nominate and elect Chairman of Board at future meeting if board so desires. President (CEO) currently filled by Charlie Robinson. Charlie nominated by Dan Daniels for 2012 term, 2nd by Rebecca, approved and accepted.Charlie Robinson would like for all board members to actively seek out additional board members and volunteers to help committee chairs to do work.

The Board of Directors also is very proud to welcome your new Secretary/Board member Danette Kellner. Our first impressions are that Danette is going to prove to be much more than a valuable asset to SEBA than we yet realize. You have just read a sample of her work. While we are very pleased with all the folks serving, your help (even in small ways) is still needed. Working together. You win, SEBA wins, and Bluegrass Wins.

SEBA Calhoun gets New Vice President

Outstanding SEBA Calhoun chapter Vice President Steve Dyrda has served his community well. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond his control made it necessary for him to step away from his position, but not from his chapter or music community. And, fortunately SEBA member Howard Withrow has stepped up to replace him. Withrow is the current president of the Georgia Mountain Music Club (another great organization), but we know him as a giving and caring member of his SEBA chapter. We wish him great success and all the best . SEBA is proud to have great volunteers like Howard Withrow.

Congratulations SEBA Calhoun you've got a good one!

“I've wanted to do this for over 2 years” said new Columbus, Ga chapter Vice President Michelle Justice. The very talented fiddle player and vocalist in the The Justice Family Bluegrass Band couldn't find the time nor a suitable location. Well, we are happy to report she has done both.“Situated on 20 acres of pine forest, Lake Pines RV Park & Campground welcomes

visitors with a family-centered retreat away from the busy world.” And now they are the hosts of SEBA's 12th chapter. We couldn't have hoped for more for the bluegrass community in the Columbus/ Pheonix City, AL area.” said SEBA president Charlie Robinson. So many wonderful opportunities lie

ahead for the fans and musicians in all of SEBA's chapters. We are most grateful for the hard work of Michelle, her friends, and a special shout out to Chapter's Committee chairman Dan Daniel for making this wonderful new

chapter a reality. Y'all come on out and support these great folks. Meeting from 3 to 6 pm. We'll be lookin for ya!

The Passing of yet another Bluegrass BrotherShorty Eager a remembrance by Dan Daniel

I met Shorty many years ago and had the pleasure of jamming with him. He was a fine Banjo Player and always fun to pick with. But like so many of my Bluegrass Friends through the years he is gone. I know in my heart he will be missed by many.He was born on Feb 13,1941 in Pennsylvania. There he was a member of the Log Cabin Boys and also played on WSAN in Allentown Pa.He took his Band down to Maggie Valley NC. and played there at Terry Suttons "Old Country Store" in Maggie Valley. He also played for a time with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys.On of his bands was Shorty Eager and the Eager Beavers. He formed another group with his wife called "Elaine & Shorty and the GrassKats" this group was based out of Atlanta Ga. They played many shows and Festivals. Shorty and Elaine were part of the original founders of SEBA in 1984. and were inductees in the Atlanta Country Music Hall Of Honor in 2007. Edward William "Shorty" Eager passed from this life on Dec 19, 2011 But his memory will live on and you will be missed my friend like so many Bluegrass Brothers that have passed on before you.

Jody Rainwater, aka Charles Edward ‘Chuck’ Johnson, spent two years in the early 1950s working for Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs as a Foggy Mountain Boy and worked for many years on country music radio.Rainwater made his first recordings with the Foggy Mountain Boys on October 20, 1950, cutting a dozen songs, several of which are bluegrass classics, including: Doin’ My Time, Pike County Breakdown, Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms, Take Me In A Life Boat, Pain In My Heart, Preachin’ Prayin’ Singin’ and Back to the Cross, on which Rainwater plays

mandolin.Just a month later they were in Nashville for their first Columbia session, which included Rainwater’s original song, I’m Waiting to Hear You Call Me Darling. Other tracks included Head Over Heels In Love With You, The Old Hometown, We Can’t Be Darlings Anymore and I’ll Stay Around.

Their two sessions in 1951 produced 14 songs. Rainwater sang the bass vocal part on the three gospel quartets, I’m Working on a Road, Get in Line Brother and Brother, I’m Getting Ready to Go.Rainwater remained with Flatt & Scruggs until June 1952.In 1998 Rainwater told ibluegrass.com…

“Earl and Lester treated me like a king, there was just about nowhere east of the Mississippi where we didn’t play. Bluegrass music was known as hillbilly music back when I first started playing. We were out more than we were home, but it was a living back then, not a lot of money though, but we got by.”

Legendary bass player Jody Rainwater passed away in his sleep on the evening of Saturday, December 24, 2011.

Jody Rainwater was 92 years old.

David BelcherDavid Belcher What can you say about a guy who is like the gift that just keeps giving? David plays a lot of roles in his bluegrass community, not just a great fiddle. The SEBA Central member helps out with his chapter, post's pictures on the SEBA Facebook Pages, works with his own Bluegrass Bonanza Band often playing free for charitable benefits, and runs his own community themed web site. Is there nothing this guy can't do?Well, let's add one more credit to the list. As reported by his chapter VP John Miller, “We did want to holler out a special thank you to Mr David Belcher for his having donated a nice wood and canvas music stand for sale and it had sold for $40 cash which was donated to big SEBA to support their larger operations as we seem to have been pretty much supporting any local costs locally as it were” Kinda makes you proud to be part of a great organization where volunteers give of their time and resources, don't it? Thanks David, you are appreciated more than you can know.

The American Legion has always been a civic minded organization, so when contacted by Rich Phillips saying, Post 112 in Dalton, Ga was going to put on shows for charity the 1st & 3rd Saturday every month, we were delighted. Still better, they wanted to use mostly SEBA bands to do it. And in fact had already started the process by booking SEBA bands Steel String Session and Rabon Creek for their first event on February 4 th. Heck! They've even got the SEBA logo on their fliers. Sounds like these folks are big time SEBA supporters. So if you can, let's get out and support these folks and their community too. FAMILY BLUEGRASS at the American Legion Post 112

Bluegrass Jamming Class taught by Jim "Duck" Adkins Bluegrass Jamming Class taught by Jim "Duck" Adkins Wednesdays Feb 15-Mar 21, 7-9:30pm in Marietta, GA

Hello, Atlanta area pickers! Pete Wernick here, with word of a unique new opportunity to learn to play bluegrass, coming to Marietta very soon. Informal jamming is an important goal for almost any beginning bluegrass picker, and yet isn't addressed in traditional types of instruction. Starting in the 1990s I developed ways of teaching jamming and applied them at music camps nationwide. Last year, I started building a network of teachers trained and certified to conduct classes using my methods -- the Wernick Method.Jim "Duck" Adkins is among the first I've certified as a Wernick Bluegrass Method

teacher. Jim has performed throughout the United States and around the world, including Lincoln Center in New York, the San Francisco Wharf, and the International House of Music in Moscow. Jim has been teaching banjo and leading jams since 1975. He is also a world-class duck impressionist -- thus his nickname "Duck." Jim makes his home in Marietta, GA and performs with two bands,Cedar Hill and Atlanta BlueGrace.

Jim's students say: ... great at facilitating jams ... generous, patient, kind, and fun to be around ... good at bringing out the best in people ... very knowledgeable about bluegrass and jamming ... good with those of us that are new and coming along--I think he is great!

The class will be held at the Banjo.com showroom in Marietta from 7-9:30pm, beginning Feb 15 and running for six Wednesdays. The extended format is intended to give everyone a chance to digest the new content each week, and practice jam skills between sessions.

If you've ever wished you could be part of a bluegrass jam, or have friends who would like to but might need a push start, I strongly recommend this class with Jim. As in every Wernick Method class, everyone will be jamming at the first session! And if you can already jam but want to brush up on your picking and singing and meet new music buddies, you're welcome too.

For more info about Jim's class, click here. Or call 770 433 2750For more info about the Wernick Bluegrass Music Method, click here.

Bruce & Cathy White are very active in the bluegrass community and we hope you will keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Cathy's cancer has returned and we all hope for her speedy recovery.
