Get a Load of our "Beamers" They're not sleek, fast or equipped with leather interiors. But they are strong and able to carry awhole lot more than a sports car. Beams made of steel or pre-stressed concrete are the musclebeneath the rebuilt I-71/670 interchange, each one designed for the bridges and overpasses they will support.

And here are the biggest and heaviest of the beams:

Tallest: New I-670 "Flyover" steel beams are eight feet in height, taller than an NBA center.Heaviest: New I-71 North bridge concrete beams weigh in at more than 80 tons each...orroughly one-third the weight of a Boeing-747 Jumbo Jet.Longest: The new I-71 North bridge measures 140 feet, 11 ! inches... or more than eight feetlonger than the largest steam railroad locomotive ever built: the Union Pacific "Big Boy,"measuring 132 feet, 9! inches.

Rescue Drill In The Construction Zone Columbus fire and heavy rescue crews got the call. "Injured man trapped on a bridge structure nearJack Gibbs Boulevard." But the call was only a drill. Firefighters and rescue specialists conducted a series of practice rescues on a recent Sunday to gain real-world experience working in an activeconstruction zone. Even though it was a mock rescue, everything was done as if it were the real thing. A total of fivecrews rotated through the rescue drill while construction activity in the zone was relatively quiet forthe weekend. Both ODOT and contractor Kokosing make project site safety a priority every day. We're pleased topartner with the Columbus Division of Fire on this rescue drill.
