What exactly are we talking about?

• Holocaust: the destruction or slaughter of human life on a mass scale.

• The Holocaust: The mass murder of Jews under the German Nazi regime during the period 1941–45.

****Note: Jews were the primary victims– 6 million were murdered; Gypsies, handicapped, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, and homosexuals also suffered grievous oppression and death.

Why did it happen?

The Holocaust took place because individuals, groups, and nations made decisions to act or not to act.

Kristallnacht: “Night of Broken Glass”

• Nov. 9, 1938– Nazis storm troopers

attacked Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues throughout Germany.

• Approx. 100 Jews were murdered

• 30,000 men sent to concentration camps

• 1st: Emigration– Eventually countries

tired of accepting refugees

• 2nd: Ghettos– Segregated

neighborhoods where Jews were forced to live
