www.transgrid.com.au Stage two of the Beaconsfield West Substation Refurbishment project involves replacement of a range of equipment on site, including a power transformer. The remaining original building built in the 1970s, will also be demolished due to its condition. TransGrid is the owner, operator and manager of the New South Wales high voltage transmission network. It is TransGrid’s job to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of electricity around New South Wales. In 2010 TransGrid began refurbishment works at the Beaconsfield West Substation to ensure the reliability of supply to the Sydney inner metropolitan area. The first stage of the project was completed in 2012, this involved a range of works including construction of two new buildings and an interconnecting gantry. Stage two of the project will complete the refurbishment at the substation. Why is the project needed? The Beaconsfield West Substation was commissioned in 1979 to support the Sydney inner metropolitan electricity network, including the Sydney Central Business District. The equipment in the substation is reaching the end of its service life and is in need of replacement. Stage two of the refurbishment project will replace necessary equipment and remove redundant assets to ensure the reliability and improve the functional use of the site. What does the Beaconsfield West Substation do? Beaconsfield West Substation is a major supply point in the Sydney inner metropolitan electricity network. It receives power supply from TransGrid’s Sydney South substation at Picnic Point and then distributes to Ausgrid power cables into the Sydney inner metropolitan area including the central business district. Where is the Beaconsfield West Substation located? The Beaconsfield West Substation is located at 44–62 Burrows Road, Alexandria, Sydney. Stage two of the Beaconsfield West Substation Refurbishment project involves replacement of a range of equipment on site, including a power transformer.

What are the works that will take place? The two existing 330/132 kV power transformers installed in 1979 are reaching the end of their service life. Based on a review of options and the supply needs of the Sydney inner metropolitan are, Transformer No. 1 will be replaced and Transformer No. 2 will be decommissioned from service.

Another vital piece of equipment on site is a shunt reactor which absorbs reactive power and increases efficiencies. The existing shunt reactor has been in operation since the substation was commissioned and is now approaching the end of its serviceable life. This will be replaced to ensure operational reliability of the substation.

The original building at Beaconsfield West contains Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) commissioned in 1979 which was replaced by the two buildings constructed during stage one of the project. Ausgrid is currently in the process of transferring all of their existing 132 kV cables from the original GIS to the two new GIS installations. This work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016.

Following the decommissioning of the existing GIS, the original building which holds this equipment will be demolished. Prior to demolition of the original GIS building, the existing communications infrastructure within this building will be relocated.

What equipment will be installed at the new substation?

> a new pre-fabricated communications building

> a new power transformer, high voltage air and gas insulated switchgear and high voltage cables

> a new shunt reactor (a large machine that helps manage substation energy efficiencies)

When will the project start and finish? Early site work for stage two of this project is expected to begin December 2014. Refurbishment work on site is expected to continue through 2015 and be completed December 2017.
