Wayne Frady of Hay-wood County Schools (HCS) gave the invo-cation and everyone
enjoyed a delicious Italian Buffet . Following the meal District President Earley introduced the guest speaker for the event, Mark Sheppard, HCS Sup-port Services Director . President Earley noted Mr . Sheppard has been with HCS for 24 years . He be-gan as the shop technology teacher and then be-came the assistant principal at Pisgah High School where he served for six years before becoming the HCS Support Services Director . Mr . Sheppard spoke about his different experiences in public school education and how he’s always counted on the maintenance staff . He’s known some of them for many years . He spoke about the challenges of “doing more with less money” and commended the HCS Maintenance Department for the great work they do . He noted that HCS has many “older” school buildings, but they are in great shape . Mr . Sheppard encouraged members to take pride in their craft .
District President Earley called the business meet-ing to order . The minutes of the previous meeting and the financial statement were provided. Presi-dent Earley asked if there were any changes, cor-rections or additions needed . The reports were approved as presented . It was noted that the fall district meeting will be hosted by Haywood County schools . Fund raising ideas were discussed .
Past State President Kristie Keener introduced the vendors present. Kristie and the district officers

Now I’m scratching my head . Let’s look at the whole supply line, connec-tions, unions and valves in order; a mental check list if you will . We have:1 . Gas line before solenoid .2 . Emergency shut off solenoid .3 . In the classroom, a locked shutoff valve .4 . Union in the classroom, right after the locked valve . Okay, let’s take the union apart and see if we have gas there . “We do .” Thinking back, maintenance has not done any work on the system past the union. The next step is to take the flex off the individual supply line under-neath the science room counter to see if we have gas there . Low and be-hold, what do we find? Water? Where did this water come from? A student got bored in class and decided introducing water into a closed off gas line would be a great idea . Needless to say, gas pressure is only about a quarter of a pound per square inch on the user end of the line . If you do the math a column of water 28 inches high equals about one psi . So our system past the locked valve had been intentionally water logged . With no end of line drain on the system we used pressurized air to blow the water out of the lines . One of our summer projects will be to put a ball valve and a plug in the low point of this system should this ever happen again . Kevin SandlinMaintenance Supervisor, Clinton City Schools

group briefly. He en-couraged members to read the Maintenance Beacon . President Goforth spoke about the upcoming 8th An-nual NCPSMA West-ern Convention and
invited members to attend . He noted the registra-tion fee and hotel prices are very reasonable and there are many great workshops available includ-ing several credit hour workshops . He also encour-aged members to participate in the upcoming 26th Annual District Six Golf Tournament .
A delicious meal, provided by CCS, was served . Following the meal District President Adkins pre-sided over the business session . District Secre-
tary/Treasurer Keith Trawick gave the financial report. The vendors in-troduced themselves and distributed door prizes . Thank you vendors for your continued support! President Goforth played a game with partici-pants and also awarded prizes .
Rosalind Laney, granddaughter of Tommy Laney of Union County Schools, was not present for the meeting this time as she was on a school field trip . She’s been at almost all the District Six meetings since she was a baby . We missed her .
Thank you to all who participated and thank you to Cabarrus County School Maintenance for hosting the event .

Our visit to Riv-erwood Thera-peutic Riding last month has payed off . Gus is riding horses every Tuesday afternoon . I nev-er dreamed we would get him in the program so quick . There is a waiting list for most of the classes at Riverwood . Fortunate for us, they have a small class on Tuesday afternoon that was not full . Gus rides with two adult men in the class and he loves it . He always looks forward to Tuesday now . The “rootin, tootin, horse ridin cow-boy” is back in the saddle again .
In April, Gus’ unofficial “big brother” turned sixteen. Brandon is the young man in high school that Gus claims as his brother now . For his birthday, Gus wanted to get Brandon a birthday cake and a card . Gus picked out a red and blue cake and a card with a red car on it . Gus loved to go see Brandon play basket-ball this year and now he is playing tennis . We delivered Bran-don’s cake and card during one of his tennis matches . I learned the hard way tennis is not exactly a good sport for Gus to be a spectator . It was way too calm and quiet for Gus . It was all I could do to keep Gus out-side the fence and off the tennis courts . Brandon won his match and Gus got to visit with him a little before his doubles match . I’m hoping this summer Gus and Brandon can visit the tennis courts again and see how Gus does at playing tennis instead of just watching . I can already picture Gus throwing tennis balls over the fence just to see how far they will go .
The Special Olympics were also in April . This is al-ways a special day for our whole family . This year, it was extra special, for two reasons . It was hosted by the local high school so Gus knew tons of people .

The high school students are the Buddies and are required to stay with their athlete all day and make sure they get to the right events at the right time . This was the first year Buddies were assigned ahead of time . We had heard several of Gus’ friends, including Salem, had requested to be his Buddy . Not sure how Brandon pulled it off but he was assigned to Gus and he did a great job all day .

I wrote this for mama and I was going to get it printed and framed for her for Mother’s Day this year but she passed on in March . She’s in Heaven now with our Lord and Savior and reunited with daddy . We are very happy for her, but we miss her funny sayings and her sweet smile .
Mama, when you look at your hands you see,Something very different from me.
You see age spots, wrinkles and thinning skin,But I see the beauty within.
I see hands that numerous gardens tended,Hands that various clothes have mended.
I see hands that held your Bible you daily read,Hands that shaped homemade bread.
I see hands that loads and loads of tobacco tied,Hands that comforted us when we cried.
I see hands countless meals prepared,Hands that showed how much you cared.
I see hands that many a sock darned,Hands that graded loads of tobacco in the barn.
I see hands that washed many a dish,Hands that have no time for anything foolish.
I see hands that strung many a bean,Hands that made sure our faces were clean.
I see hands that fed many a kitten,Hands that many encouraging words have written.
I see hands that hauled in wood,Hands that made meals extra good.
I see hands that stoked the fire,Hands that held a hymnal as you sang in the choir.
I see hands that mopped the floor,Hands that welcomed visitors as you opened the kitchen door.
I see hands that gave “love thumps” to daddy’s head,Hand that always made your bed.
I see hands that purchased the famous ‘mega roll’ of Christmas wrap,Hands that placed children in your lap.
I see hands that made pies so divine,Hands that hung clothes on the line.
I see hands that many a vegetable peeled,Hands that hoed tobacco in the field.
I see hands that sewed tablecloths for extra cash,Hands that carried out the trash.
I see hands that skillfully made a flaky crust for a pie,Hands that picked blackberries in July.
I see hands holding daddy’s hand as you sat by his hospital bed,Hands that gently stroked his sweet head.
I know your hands have done so much more,Your loving hands that I adore!

year we’ve been to an indoor Special Olympics . The weather was rainy so everything was set up in the two gyms and the shop class . Gus participated in his three usual events; softball throw, long jump and the 50 meter run . The run ended up being Gus’ most challenging event . The run was along one side of the basketball court so it was very short this year . About halfway through his run, Gus spotted the Chick-fil-a cow and took an immedi-ate left turn . He didn’t finish his race but he got a picture with the cow and he got his ribbon anyway . Gus’ main objective at the Special Olympics is obviously not about winning; it’s all about having fun .
Brandon and Gus disappeared for a few minutes while I picked up their lunch . When they returned,

Mama’s church fixed a meal for us before her fu-neral . There was so much good food to enjoy . One of my favorite desserts was a banana pudding . I asked my cousin if she knew who made it so I could get the recipe . She told me it was a Paula Deen recipe . I looked it up online and found the recipe . It is very good . I hope you will give it a try!
No Yo’ Mama’s Banana Pudding
Ingredients2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies6 to 8 bananas, sliced2 cups milk1 (5 .1-ounce) box instant French vanilla pudding1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream
DirectionsLine the bottom of a 13 by 9 by 2-inch dish with 1 bag of cookies and layer bananas on top . In a bowl, combine the milk and pudding mix and blend well using a handheld electric mixer (I used a whisk and beat by hand) . Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth . Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture . Add the cream cheese mix-ture to the pudding mixture and stir until well blend-ed . Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies . Refrigerate until ready to serve .

Gus was talking about a vacuum . Turns out, after a visit to the bath-room Gus found the jani-tor’s closet and spotted a vacuum . I’m not sure why but Gus has a thing for vacuums right now . He loves to vacuum and he asks everyone he sees “what color is your vacuum” and “is it loud?” Once Gus was finished with his lunch and all his events, we went to see the vacuum . Brandon disappeared for just a sec-ond and when he returned, he told Gus to follow him with the vacuum . Turns out Brandon, had went to the office and asked if Gus could vacuum some-
