IntroductionThis Insights Discovery profile is based on Sarah Duvall’s responses to the Insights PreferenceEvaluator which was completed on 19 March 2014.

The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocratesidentified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built aroundthe model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This modelwas published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings.Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work inunderstanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to thepresent day.

Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understandingand development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths andweaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help themto better respond to the demands of their environment.

Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. Itreports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Cautious, conventional, diplomatic and sincere, Sarah is a precise and disciplined person withhigh standards and expectations of herself. Sarah is a curious and keen student of all that is going on around her. She has rather demandingstandards both at home and at work. She greatly prefers to trust what she can hear,smell, taste, touch and see, rather than accept abstract or intangible ideas. A capacity for coolemotional detachment makes Sarah a good decision maker, because she thinks clearly underpressure. Practical, systematic, thorough and hard working, Sarah likes everything to be statedclearly and simply. In her own field she has a leaning towards the technical, but may tend tounderestimate her own abilities.

She may sometimes take over the work of others rather than leave important tasks undone, ordone poorly. The avoidance of social engagements may make her feel guilty at havingforsaken a social duty in order to satisfy her need for privacy and solitude. She is suspicious ofwhat may be lurking beneath a smile.

She may be seen by others as distant, unfeeling, sceptical, not interested in people and evenarrogant - a perception that she finds difficult to understand. She dislikes being criticised byothers as she is already heavily burdened by her inner voice of self-judgement. She shouldremember to more frequently consider other people's ideas and feelings, and not to become toorigid and inflexible. She prefers positions of low visibility, with limited participation in the group orteam. She will often do without something rather than reach out to others to get it. She may seekto reduce her personal needs rather than be dependent on other people.

Sarah is seen by others as reserved and cautious. She may lack an understanding of how herbehaviour affects others and can be critical and blunt in giving recommendations forimprovement. She may need to be more outspoken and more direct with most people, not justthose with whom she is close. She sees through slick images and false presentations and iswary of being taken in by compliments or praise. To guard against being manipulated she will besensitive to indications of a hidden agenda. She will make a lifelong friend if the conditions of thefriendship allow her complete independence and the freedom to withdraw as and whennecessary.

Decision Making

Sarah tends to make logical, private decisions, seeing and stating things quietly, clearly anddeliberately. She tends to make sound future decisions only after deeper reflection. She mayoccasionally be slow at coming to a decision, or try to have a decision reversed, as she has aneed to analyse all the available alternatives. Her focus on the present leads her not to takeanything for granted - even information from people she respects. She is logical, objective andanalytical with great reasoning power.

She usually delays decision making until all the facts and details are available. Using pastexperiences to help her solve current problems and get things done is one of her strong points.She has an ability to note what is needed in a situation and act accordingly. She is not usuallyprepared to commit to high risk decisions. She is usually aware of the need to comply with theestablished view.

Sarah can usually get to the heart of any situation and implement an effective solution. Sarah'smany accomplishments are achieved mainly through determination and perseverance inreaching or exceeding her high standards. She has a tendency to separate out the differentcomponents of her life, wanting predictability and preferring to know various options in advance.She may appear dismissive of decisions made on “gut-feel” rather than objective analysis.Making decisions comes logically to her, although her need for detachment results in colleaguesviewing her as rather distant.

Possible Blind SpotsOur perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who weare onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our lessconscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “BlindSpots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test themfor validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues.

Sarah’s possible Blind Spots:

Sarah would sometimes benefit from finding out what matters emotionally to others. A potentialfailing for her may be that she may not gain sufficient intimate experience of the world. She maybe slower at producing results than some others as gathering data is often the most stimulatingpart of the job for her.

She may rely so much on her logical, analytical thinking that she overlooks the people issues. Asa logical and impersonal analyst, she doesn't always consider the impact of her decisions onothers. Gathering relevant and factual data to help ensure that her ideas are workable, sheneeds to simplify her often theoretical and complicated ideas for the benefit of others. As she canbe seen as somewhat cold and uncaring, she needs to become more aware of her own feelingsas well as more considerate of the thoughts and feelings of others. She is something of aperfectionist, and can be hypersensitive to criticism of her work.

She needs to work toward becoming more articulate and action-oriented. She finds it extremelydifficult and even embarrassing to express gratitude for any assistance she has received. Herability to detect what might go wrong is perceived by some others as suspicion of anything newand untested. She can be reserved and hard to get to know, only willing to share her innerfeelings with people she trusts. Because of her well developed tolerance of herself and otherpeople, Sarah may appear detached and disinterested.

Opposite TypeThe description in this section is based on Sarah's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Recognising your Opposite Type:

Sarah’s opposite Insights type is the Inspirer, Jung’s “Extraverted Feeling” type.

Inspirers are outgoing and enthusiastic, seeking favourable social environments where they candevelop and maintain contacts. Verbally effusive, they are good at promoting their own ideas.They can create enthusiasm in others for their cause. They have a wide network ofacquaintances and relationships.

Sarah will notice that the Inspirer tends to misjudge the abilities of self and others. Inspirers oftenleap to favourable conclusions without all of the information. To Sarah they may appearinconsistent. Inspirers find controlling and planning their time difficult. The Inspirer is a smoothtalking persuader and may appear indifferent to people, such as Sarah, who appear to be notsuch “extraverted achievers” as themselves. However, Inspirers sometimes take conflict orrejection personally and bitterly.

Many Inspirers are convinced that they are naturally superior and may come across to Sarah assomewhat boastful. They will prefer communicating orally rather than through the written wordand may dislike and avoid tasks that require attention to detail or heavy paperwork. Sarah mayperceive Inspirers as shallow or superficial, due to their glib way with words.
