As you receive this bulletin we are all beginning our preparations for the High Holy Days. We recognize that another year is coming to an end and as we look forward to 5773 we are filled with both anticipation and anxiety. What will the year be like? Will we be blessed? Will we have lives filled with health and fulfillment? Or, on the other hand, will our lives be filled with troubles, travails and frustrations? Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur bring a moment of evaluation of the past and cautious anticipation of the future.

These sentiments are expressed in our services on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur through the liturgy in the Mahzor, the High Holiday prayer book. Last year a new Mahzor was printed. The Koren Rosh Hashana Mahzor, edited by Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, was published as a new addition to the liturgy and commentary of the High Holidays. In his introduction Rabbi Sacks writes that “The genius of Judaism was to take eternal truths and translate them into time, into lived experiences.” He suggests that “Rosh Hashana, the anniversary of the creation of humanity, invites us to live and feel the human condition in graphic ways.”

He then outlines ten major lessons that are taught through the medium of Rosh Hashana and the High Holiday season. Each of these themes is found in the Mahzor. They give us cause for contemplation, meditation and evaluation.

“The first thing it tells us is that life is short.” Rabbi Sacks reminds us of the U'netane Tokef prayer and the stark reality that it paints for us of human mortality. Life and death are held in the balance at this time of year.

“The second is: life itself, each day, every breath we take, is the gift of God.” He reminds us that we must take nothing for granted. We do not know what lies ahead not only for the next year, but even for the next day. Each day is a special gift.

“Third, we are free. Judaism is the religion of the free human being freely responding to the God of freedom.” We have free choice and the ability to choose good or evil. We can willingly do Teshuva, repentance. So much is in our hands.

“Fourth, life is meaningful.” We are not put on this earth as mere accidents; we are here for a purpose. It is our responsibility to ensure that we live up to our greatest potential. We know that we can make of life something meaningful for ourselves, our families, our communities, and our world.

“Fifth, life is not easy.” Unfortunately, too often we understand and learn this lesson the hard way as difficulties come our way. Each of us has moments of frustration, despondency and difficulty. The Messianic Age has not arrived and each of us is in need of healing.

“Sixth, life may be hard, but it can still be sweet, the way the challah and the apple are on Rosh Hashana when we dip them in honey.” It is important to be optimistic, to look forward with hope and faith. This has always been the Jewish credo. To live as a Jew is to be concerned about the small things in life and to never stop giving back to the world. We have the opportunity to make life sweet for others as well.

Mission Statement

We are a congregation of families and individuals who come together to pray, to study, and to create a warm and welcoming community. We endeavor to provide resources to help us relate to God, understand the ways of God and enrich the Jewish content of our lives. We encourage our members to serve worthwhile causes within our Congregation and the wider Jewish and world communities. We are committed to support Israel. Preparations for the High Holy Days (continued from page 1)

small task and it is no small challenge. We have the opportunity to create a new art form by living our lives in such a way that they are meaningful as well as aesthetic.

“Eighth, we are what we are because of those who came before us.” As Jews we recognize that we are links in a long chain of history and tradition. We are not disconnected whatsoever from the past. While the Jewish people still exists, it is our responsibility to maintain the continuity of our people well into the future. Rabbi Sacks reminds us that the reason we recall on Rosh Hashana our patriarchs and our matriarchs, as well as Hannah and Jeremiah, is that they all bring us messages of hope for the future.

“Ninth, we are heirs to another kind of greatness too, that of the Torah itself and its high demands, its strenuous ideals, its panoply of mitzvot, its intellectual and existential challenges.” Being a Jew is a privilege for we have received a remarkable heritage. We are called upon to be God's witnesses here on earth. As Judaism sets the bar high so must we in our standard of living and in our capacity to do good in the world.

“And finally comes the sound of the shofar, piercing our defense that is a wordless cry in a religion of words, a sound produced by a breath as if to tell us that that is all life is – a mere breath

– yet breath is nothing less than the spirit of God within us.” This intersection between God and us is part of both the theology and the liturgy of Rosh Hashana and also of Yom Kippur.

These are days of great challenge and of immense importance. We come together as a community recognizing our foibles and our weaknesses as well as the majesty of our uniqueness and our heritage. We come with hopes and dreams and pray that they may be fulfilled. We do not know what to expect during the coming year, yet with hope and with faith we pray that our lot shall be good and our lives blessed.

As we prepare for the new year of 5773, I pray that it may be a good year for us all. May it be a year of blessing, a year of health and personal growth, a year of peace in our community and our country, a year of security and peace for the State of Israel, a year of well-being for the entire Jewish people and a year of fulfillment for all humanity.

3August-September 2012 / Av 5772-Tishrei 5773

Some weeks back I was attending evening services in the days just before Shavuot. One of the distinctive elements of services between Pesach and Shavuot is the Counting of the Omer, just before the Aleinu hymn. Every day during services we count down another day until we've reached forty-nine. Quoting from the recently published tome, The Observant Life, The Wisdom of Conservative Judaism For Contemporary Jews (in which Rabbi Kurtz is a contributor!), “Counting the Omer highlights the agricultural dimension of the festivals of Passover and Shavuot. In ancient times, a measure of the first barley to be harvested (called an omer) was brought to the Temple as an offering of thanksgiving and gratitude…In an agricultural society, where existence was wholly dependent on the produce of the land, an expression of gratitude for the fecundity of the soil needed little further explanation.”

The reason I'm bringing it up here is not because we are in the middle of the fertile summer, but because on this particular evening, there was a dispute on exactly how far along were we in Counting the Omer. Was it forty-seven or forty-eight? There was a buzz of non-

acrimonious disagreement within the Sager...what to do? We had already recited the prayer stating that it was the forty-seventh day. But, it turned out that we were on the forty-eighth day. After a few moments of back and forth...and with Rabbi Kurtz's guidance, it was decided to recite a portion of the prayer again, but noting that it was the forty-eighth day instead.

This small interchange, no more than one or two minutes long, represented to me some of the best of Beth El.

First, congregants were taking direct responsibility for an element of observance that was important to them. This wasn't just Rabbi Kurtz or Rabbi Schwab or Hazzan Goller or Mark Stadler stepping in and directing congregants...it was a discussion amongst both clergy and staff and congregants. It was collaborative on an element of observance that mattered. It was a moment where all the participants wanted to do the right thing.

Second, no one was just walking away from the issue, whether it was minor or not. There was clearly a right thing to do, even if that meant that the service would be briefly (maybe all of 90 seconds) longer. In the end, it was a

testimonial to the often expressed thought - if you are going to do something, do it right. And even if that meant working through a few moments of confusion and concluding the service later than everyone expected, it was better and more meaningful to conclude knowing that we had covered the bases. Not getting it right would have been like a baseball player hitting a triple, but not stepping on first or second base!

At Beth El, I like to believe that we are always striving to ‘get it right’ instead of just ‘getting through it’! We're fortunate that this is an attitude that is pretty pervasive throughout the synagogue. And not just with our clergy and our professionals, but with our many active and involved members. Friends, another blessing for which we can all be thankful! Happy summer all!

PS: If you haven't attended our congregant-led summer services, give it a try! Members run the service from start to finish, with a different congregant every week delivering a terrific sermon as well.

High Holiday Services

Service Schedule – 2012/ 5773 Be a Teen Aide for Children's High Holiday Services!

Volunteering to be a teen aide for Children's High Holiday services is an incredibly rewarding experience. Teen aides play a crucial role in the success of these services, and their responsibility encompasses much more than passing out juice and challah. During the children's services they are helping to ensure a meaningful High Holiday experience for our children as well as providing for their welfare and safety.

This year spaces are limited for teen aides. In order to be an aide, you must be in grades 8-12, and have to commit to a training session/meeting with your teacher. You can attend any of the three training sessions, but you must attend in order to be an aide. Training sessions are on:

• Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00pm – Aides at the Beth El Location • Monday, September 10th at 7:00pm – Aides at the HPHS Location (but meeting

will be at Beth El)• Tuesday, September 12th at 7:00pm – Makeup date for aides at either location

If you are going to be an aide at the Beth El location, you need to be there all three days. We will be strict with deadlines for registration to be an aide - the final deadline to apply will be August 17, 2012.

Aides will receive a free ticket to high holiday services as compensation (*note that at the Beth El location, free tickets will only be given in the last several rows, not seated with parents.)

The application to be a Teen Aide for Children's High Holiday Services can be found online at www.nssbethel.org under the heading High Holy Days. If you have questions about teen aides or anything related to Children's High Holiday services, please contact Ali Drumm at [email protected]

New this year at Children's High Holiday Services!Following the format of Tot Shabbat, families with preschool aged children will have the opportunity to join together in prayer on the 1st day of Rosh Hashana, Monday, September 17th at 9:00-10:00am and on Yom Kippur, Wednesday, September 26th at 9:30-10:30am. This service is geared for preschool aged children, but all families with young children and their siblings are welcome to attend. Families attending services at the Highland Park High School are welcome to attend this service at NSS Beth El – a separate letter accompanying your regular tickets will be issued. Space is Limited and Pre-Registration is Required. Babysitting will be open at this service ends at 10:00am for young children and teachers will be in their rooms for Gan Chagim, Tot Chagim, and Mini Minyan. Join us for this wonderful opportunity to pray together as a family at NSS Beth El!

Again note, this service will be held only at NSS Beth El. If you register, a special letter will allow your entrance with HPHS tickets.

How I Spent My Summer

From Hazzan Larry Goller

This past weekend, I returned to Beth El after having spent the last several weeks away. Some of you greeted me in shul this past Shabbat with the words, “I hope you enjoyed your vacation.” While I spent that time out, it was not exactly time off, as the three trips I took were all of a professional nature.

In early July, I spent one week at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, where I served as Hazzan-in-Residence. In addition to working with some children on preparation for their upcoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah, I also taught some classes on tefillah, gave a d'var tefillah to a different age group each morning, and had a quick prep session on leading Birchat Hachodesh (the Blessing of the New Month) on the Shabbat preceding Rosh Chodesh Av. It's a pleasure seeing so many of our Beth El children enjoying their summer in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. From what I can tell, they all seem to have survived the early summer heat wave quite nicely (notwithstanding one of our kids glowing with the remnants of what looked like a painful case of sunburn). And of course, the kids enjoyed the annual Kiddush Beth El sponsored (provided by me) after services on Shabbat morning. I got a hot tip that the kids really enjoy fresh fruits and veggies even more that the sweets and chips I generally provide – though the results didn't necessarily bear that out!

Among our children up here this summer is my middle daughter Davida, who was thrilled to have her younger sister Julia visiting for the week – and she didn't seem to mind my presence (too) much! Julia reveled in the staff day camp, enjoying the activities, making new friends, and getting a taste of what sleepaway camp might be like.

I returned from camp Sunday evening and had barely enough time to unpack and repack before catching an early Monday morning flight to New York to participate in the North American Jewish Choral Festival. I attended as a member of staff and taught, as I have for the last several years. This year, I presented a class on the music of the Yiddish Theatre in the United States in the early 20th century –known better as the “Golden Age of Second Avenue”. I enjoyed preparing for the class as much as I enjoyed teaching it! I also participated in an “instant ensemble,” a choir that came together first on Monday, practiced through Thursday morning, and then performed, along with four other choirs of varying skill levels, in a choir-to-choir concert on Thursday morning.

In addition to choral singing, there were classes and workshops galore on a wide variety of topics including Torah Cantillation, the music of Max Janowski and of the Sephardic and Yemenite Jewish communities, the image of angels in Jewish music, finding the “Jewish” in the Music of Leonard Bernstein – and many others! While I was one of a number of Jewish music professionals in attendance, we were by far in the minority. This was truly a “festival” targeted to amateur singers of all skill levels – or even simply lovers of Jewish music! If you think you may qualify, please speak to me – I'd love for you to join us next year - I guarantee you'll thank me!

But my first trip and the highlight of my summer was my participation in the Cantors Assembly mission. In late June, I travelled to Germany with approximately 100 of my colleagues, as well as another 200 of their family members, congregants, and guests, spending most of our time in Berlin and Munich. We also visited Wannsee, including a visit to the lakeside villa in which top German leadership planned the implementation of the “final solution,” as well as Potsdam, where some of us saw Geiger-Kolleg, established in 1999 and home to a rabbinic and cantorial seminary of the University of Potsdam. We visited Dachau, now a small town outside of Munich but once the site of the first labor/concentration camp in WWII.

Our “mission” was to learn about our heritage from the historical Jewish community of Germany, including our Jewish musical heritage from composers as diverse as Louis Lewandowski and Kurt Weill. Additionally, we shared our talents with currently existing Jewish communities there. On the Sunday evening of our visit, we presented a joint interfaith concert at the Berliner Cathedral Dome, the largest Protestant Church in Europe, joined by its resident choir and its talented Cathedral Choirmaster, Tobias Brommann. This concert featured choral liturgical music of our respective faiths, featuring works by Leonard Bernstein, Georg Friedrich Händel, and Sergei Rachmaninov, including a piece composed by Charles Fox, a contemporary Los Angeles composer (you would best know his works for Hollywood, including the theme song from the ‘70's TV show Love Boat, as well as his song “I've Got a Name,” popularized by the late folk-rock singer Jim Croce).

In Munich, we conducted a moving service at the Munich Jewish Community Center in memory of the 11 Israeli athletes that were killed during the Olympics held in that city 40 year earlier. (At the time this took place, the International Olympic Committee had yet to announce a plan of its own to commemorate this tragedy.)

On our last evening in Germany, which was July 4, we presented a concert in honor of American Independence Day at the Herkulessaal (a concert hall in Munich and the former throne room of King Ludwig I) entitled “From Mahler to Mack the Knife.” The evening began with a presentation to Dr. Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria. The concert featured music of Jewish composers, many of

whom were from Germany or of German roots. The program ranged from the well-known Tzaddik Katamar of Lewandowski to the art songs of Franz Lehar and Arnold Schoenberg to Broadway melodies of Kurt Weill and Rogers & Hammerstein.

As with our mission to Poland three years ago, we were accompanied on our trip by Dr. Stephen Berk, Professor of Holocaust and Jewish studies at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Dr. Berk presented lectures almost daily about the history of Germany and of its Jewish community, to the present day. Dr. Berk is easily one of the most captivating speakers I've ever had the honor of hearing. His lectures provided a great “background” to our visit, providing not only history but perspective as well.

Overall, it's been a great summer so far – hope yours was, too!

I am most honored to have joined the staff of NSSBE in May as your new Development Manager. In my new part-time position, I am working with staff and volunteer leadership to execute development strategy in supporting annual giving and major campaigns – managing all giving related activity at the synagogue. With my long career in Jewish communal service and experience as a communications and administrative professional, it is a privilege to join this venerable synagogue and work with such devoted new friends.

Born and raised in Winnetka (as Nancy Kleine), I graduated from New Trier West and Northwestern with a degree in Communications before moving to Cleveland, Ohio where I raised three daughters and worked as a Day School Administrator at The Agnon School and as the Executive Director of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, both in Beachwood. In 2008, I had the pleasure of returning to the Chicago area (where my mother still lives in the same house on Tower Road!) with my husband Larry, a Senior Portfolio Manager for the Foundation and Institutional Advisory Group of The Northern Trust.

The definition of the word development is the process of changing and becoming larger, stronger, or more impressive, successful, or advanced, or of causing somebody or something to change in this way. What a rich and fruitful description of my work here! As I begin my tenure as your Development Manager, I am already impressed by this warm, nurturing, comprehensive worship and educational community. Your garden of development activities is firmly rooted; I look forward to cultivating and continuing its growth.

Rabbi Yitschak Eisik said, “The motto of life is ‘Give and Take.’ Everyone must be both a giver and a receiver. He who is not is like a barren tree.” I have not encountered any barren trees in your development garden at NSSBE.

• You have glorious annuals which bloom every year: annual giving programs such as Fair Share Dues, the High Holy Days Kol Nidre appeal, the Memorial Book of Remembrance, and other current appeals from the school and affiliated groups. While annuals must be planted and renewed each year, they constitute the important anchor in meeting our operating needs. And every gardener tries to plant more each year, to add more color to the annual blooming cycle.

• Perennials take more care. They are your future, establishing roots and returning year after year as the foundation of your garden design. So too is it with your synagogue Endowment, planted now with the hope of continuing growth for future generations. Your vast facilities, your endowed funds, and your estate gifts will insure the future viability of NSSBE.

Just as we are all receivers of a wide range of synagogue services and programming, so too must we all be givers, choosing where to plant our seeds in the vast garden of development activities. I look forward to being your resource in helping you with your giving to the synagogue. Please contact me at 847-432-8900 x237 or [email protected]. All my best wishes for a happy, healthy, and fruitful New Year!

Author Barb Rosenstock gave a fun, dynamic, engaging and interactive presentation to our 3 & 4 year-old Steinberg Preschool students about her picture book, The Littlest Mountain, on May 16. She brought oversized props and costumes and the children helped her tell the story of how G-d chose the mountain on which to give the Ten Commandments. She also spoke to the students about how she became an author and how books are created.

Sisterhood is stepping back in time with Dr. Irving Cutler, as we explore old Jewish neighborhoods and synagogues throughout the Chicagoland area. Dr. Irving Cutler is a famous historian, author, and expert on the history of Jewish Chicago. He will vividly guide and illustrate for Sisterhood, the fascinating story of the cultural, religious, and everyday life of Chicago’s Jews. If you have never had the opportunity to spend a day with Sisterhood and Dr. Irving Cutler, then this is the day to put aside in your calendar and make sure not to miss! Bus will leave Beth El at 9:00am and return to

our parking lot by 3:00pm. Bag lunch and drink will be provided, but space is limited so secure your seat by August 24 by sending a $65.00 check payable to Beth El Sisterhood. Please write on check memo if you would prefer turkey sandwich or chicken fajita wrap and mail to Michelle Krawitz, 320 N. Deere Park Dr. W., Highland Park, IL 60035.

Sisterhood Matters! Be Involved. Be Enriched. Be Inspired.

Sisterhood is on the Road Again....Tuesday, August 28

Growing up in a conservative home, then moving into Highland Park after getting married, joining the North Suburban Beth El Synagogue family made me feel right at home. My husband Michael, and I knew we wanted our family to experience the strong Jewish community that Beth El had to offer. Beth El's preschool, Hebrew school, and Hebrew high school have had one of our children attending their programs over the last 15 years. Our children Brandon 17, Jordan 15 and Deena 12 have grown with Michael and I strongly placing an emphasis on the synagogue and its significant meaning to our family.

After getting involved with the Sisterhood board five years ago at the age of 36, I knew my journey at Beth El was taking a major turn. I began finding myself and my family spending more and more time at the synagogue and attending programs where people's faces had names I knew. I loved learning about all the amazing things Sisterhood had done for our Beth El community and was intrigued to get more involved. Five years later I am officially installed as the next Sisterhood President.

Immediately following my installation, I was busy at work with my new board planning and organizing our 2012-2013 calendar. I knew the path Sisterhood has traveled was an amazing one and I am eager to follow the steps of the remarkable women before me. I am looking forward to seeing my Sisterhood friends as we return from our summer vacation and begin with our board meeting Tuesday, August 7 at 12:30pm.

I would like to welcome and encourage the women of Beth El to join me on my journey. Sisterhood's strong roots grow and blossom with the many diverse and incredible women within our community. I am here today as Sisterhood's President because of the strong roots given to me by my four Holocaust Survivor grandparents who reminded me everyday that being a Jewish woman in America is an amazing privilege and one not to be taken for granted.

It was with these values that my Jewish journey began and one that I hope to carry with me as I begin my Presidency. Please join us as our Sisterhood looks back at Chicago's own Jewish history and see how the journey keeps changing, but like me, still carries from place to place the lessons we learned from growing up in a Jewish home.

FJMC Midwest Region RetreatAnother successful retreat was held on April 27th thru April 29th in

Springfield, Illinois at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel. Over thirty Men's Club members from Nebraska, Missouri and Illinois gathered to learn, pray and enjoy a most stimulating three days. The theme of the Retreat was “Men's Roles in Jewish Life”. Attending from Beth El were Darryl Temkin, Gerald Brin and Ernie Smolen.

Beginning on Friday afternoon, arriving “retreaters” were greeted with snacks and the ruach of the week end began. Soon thereafter, Kabblat Shabbat services were held, followed by a delicious Shabbat dinner. All of the meals were dairy/vegetarian and the hotel catering provided creative menus that everyone enjoyed.

The guest speaker was Professor Sarah Imhoff. She is a scholar of the history of Judaism and her research explores Jewish identity in the American past and present with particular attention to gender roles. Receiving her PHD from The University of Chicago, she is presently Assistant Professor in the Borns Jewish Studies Program and Religious Studies Department at The Indiana University. Professor Imhoff gave an interesting and stimulating lecture on the theme of the retreat, followed by questions and discussion. The hospitality room ( Kiddush Club ) provided every one a chance to sit around, schmooze and enjoy the atmosphere of men's company.

Shabbat morning services were lead by Men's Club members who provided inspirational readings and chanting throughout the service. A Kiddush and lunch followed. The afternoon activity was a walk to the Dana-Thomas House, a Frank Lloyd Wright house, where an hour guided tour took the visitors back many decades. After a Shabbat nap, Mincha, dinner, Ma'ariv and Havdalah, again Professor Imhoff lead more discussions on men's roles in Jewish family life and synagogue leadership. A second visit to the Kiddush Club ended the day.

Sunday morning found every one putting on Tallit and Tefillen. Following a typical lox and bagel breakfast, with all of the trimmings, the program was “Leadership Training”, “Hearing Men's Voices” and “Men's Issues in Synagogue Life”. These discussions were lead by our own men. After lunch, warm “good byes” and back home. A most worthwhile weekend of learning, praying and enjoying a “man's thing”. Next will be the International FJMC Convention in Boston, Massachusetts to be held on July 24th to July 28th, 2013.

The FJMC Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle ProgramThe concept of a special yahrzeit candle was originally developed in

late 1970 by survivors of the Shoah, in their local communities. By 1980 brotherhoods in Canada and Massachusetts refined and expanded the program. Word spread to the rest of the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs and a Yellow Candle program was born.

The purpose of the Yellow Candle was to provide people with a familiar and meaningful ritual that would enable them to remember victims of the Shoah with an observance in their homes. Since then, the “Shoah Yellow Candle” program has expanded to become one of the most successful and far-reaching programs of FJMC. Last year 150,000 yellow candles were distributed in North America and abroad.

The Shoah Yellow Candle program was adopted at Beth El Men's Club in 1986 and chaired by David Solomon. Through the following years the program has expanded and reaches out to the entire North Suburban Synagogue Beth El family. Yellow candles are shipped to the entire membership locally, including Florida, Arizona and California. This year over 1,000 yellow candles were put in the mail.

Preparing and packing has become an annual event including Men's Club volunteers and a number of USY'ers. For the past fifteen years the program has been chaired by Joe Adler.

Beginning in 2004 Men's Club instituted a Youth program whereby funds from the Yellow Candle contributions would provide a stipend for our young people who visited the Shoah sites in Eastern Europe. Their only requirement was to present a program upon their return home. This program was chaired by Michael Simkin z'l" and Arnie Sandler. Our Men's Club is also proud to have made a Founding Member contribution to Skokie Holocaust Educational Center and Museum.

With the support of Rabbi Kurtz, this year, as in the past, several thousand dollars have been raised through the Yellow Candle Program, and Men's Club thanks all of the contributors. However, only 19% of the households receiving the Yellow Candle responded, with contributions ranging from $12 to $118. The program is successful, but falls short of its potential. More congregants are urged to participate in the Shoah Yellow Candle program. Hopefully, participation will grow and next year will see at least 25% contributing until everyone sees the need and we reach 100%.

Midwest Region FJMC HonoredThe Chicago Council for the Jewish Elderly and the CJE Senior

Life honored the Men's Clubs of the Midwest Region at a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon (held at Beth Hillel Congregation B'nai Emunah in Wilmette) on April 15th and April 25th respectively. These are yearly events honoring approximately 250 volunteers. For the past five years several Men's Clubs have been assisting at Shabbat morning Services at the Lieberman Geriatric Center in Skokie.

Quoting from the award certificate, “Devoted volunteers from the FJMC Midwest Region, which include groups from local Synagogues Beth Hillel Congregation B'nai Emunah, Congregation Beth Judea, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Congregation Beth Shalom and Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation (until the Congregation closed in 2010) have been participating in Shabbat morning services with residents at Lieberman Center since 2007.....Generous donations through the congregations as a result of relationships built, have enhanced services at Lieberman and Gidwitz Place by helping repair or replace Torahs and printing new prayer books, which were adapted to the residents' special needs. The ruach that these volunteers bring to Lieberman's services each week enriches the experience for the residents exponentially. They are performing a great mitzvah by sharing their Shabbat with Lieberman residents, and are truly Outstanding Volunteers!

Representing the Clubs were: Donald Babendir, Beth Hillel Congregation B'nai Emunah; Mark Travis, Congregation Beth Judea; Darryl Temkin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El; Dan Sher, Congregation Beth Shalom; Ernie Smolen, Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation and project coordinator.

The festive luncheon and award ceremony was followed by a wonderful and entertaining concert by the Chicago a cappella choir, who offered outstanding Hebrew selections.

The FJMC Midwest Region appreciates the honors and looks forward to continuing this most worthwhile mitzvah in the ensuing years.

Good & Welfare – The Men's Club has lost a long-time, valued officer and member. Michael Simkin will be remembered and missed. May his memory be for a blessing.

Bruchim Ha-Baim – Welcome to the new school year! We miss your children when they are not here! We will open our doors and hearts for students in the Cohen Religious School (2nd thru 7th grade) on Wednesday, September 5th, and for students in primary grades (Pre-K thru 1st) as well as Sokol Hebrew High School students on Sunday, September 9th.

We welcome new and returning students and new and returning teachers. This year we will have a Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 12th for both schools. We invite all parents and high school students to attend this important event. This is an opportunity to learn about the schools' educational vision and highlights of the curriculum, as well as become familiar with the textbooks, materials, technology, and teachers. Our teachers have been trained to implement new programs of study such as Chalav u'dvash, Tal Am, Project Etgar, Israel Inside/Out, and Hebrew instruction. I plan to use the next few bulletins to expand on each program of study and report on their implementation and progress. In addition, this year we will focus on one midah (Jewish virtue) each month. The midot, derived from Jewish tradition, serve as a moral compass to guide one's life on how to interact with others, with G-d, and with ourselves. By adopting and executing midot we elevate an act to its loftiest emotional, interpersonal, and spiritual height. School and home are natural places to help students develop and master the midot. The first midah we will focus on is Anavah (humility). The months of Elul and Tishrei are especially suitable to delve into the significance of Anavah; a time to deflate our egos in order to be sensitive to others as well as to open the doors to the divine.

We have many new course offerings in the SHHS; please check the website at www.nssbethel.org for more information. Students from other congregations are welcome to participate in our program.

I look forward to a prolific year filled with learning, friendship, and Yiddishkait ! Please do not hesitate to contact me at 847-432-8900, ext. 227 or [email protected] if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns. Shanah Tovah V'Gmar V'Chatimah Tovah! Have a good and sweet year!

Alicia GejmanDirector of Formal Education

Some of the new curriculum highlights of this year include:

• Chalav u'dvash: Gan and Kitah Alef (Kindergarten and 1st grade) will use this new, innovative, and orally mediated Hebrew language instruction program, which features Bentzi, the Hebrew speaking turtle puppet from Israel, as he addresses children's everyday situations. Children learn to listen to the Hebrew language through play, music, and object manipulation.

• Tal Am Hebrew curriculum: Kitah Bet (2nd grade) will use this unique curriculum of Hebrew Language Arts and Heritage, which is used in many Jewish schools around the world and based on the principles of language development, language acquisition, and learning. Through the use of textbooks, music, games, and visual aids

(CD-ROMS, posters) we will ensure the development of the Hebrew language and the understanding of Jewish concepts. The natural approach to Hebrew language acquisition will enable students to explore their heritage in an exciting manner.

• Project Etgar: Kitah Vav (6th grade) will use this national curriculum developed by The Melton Research Center of the Jewish Theological Seminary and United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism's Department of Education for middle school students in Conservative congregational schools. This curriculum is based on 4MAT, an educational model that engages students in active learning while considering their individual learning styles. Project Etgar units integrate Jewish life beyond the confines of the classroom through family education, community service, and practical applications for Jewish living.

• Israel Inside/Out: In this course, SHHS students will learn about the Land of Israel, current issues, and the complexities of the Middle East conflict by exploring Israel's politics and sociology in an exciting and interactive way. Animated maps, diagrams, and original film footage give students an insider's view into one of the world's most intriguing and mystifying countries – with no airfare required! This course aims to inspire students to care about and form a stronger relationship with Israel, to make students proud of their Jewish identity, and to encourage them to identify with their Jewish communities. This course will feature films, discussions, activities, simulations, and review.

New Conversational Hebrew Classes for the SHHS:

• The Advanced Beginners Conversational Hebrew class will meet on Sundays from 9:15–11:00am or Tuesdays from 5:30–7:15pm. This course is suitable for students who read and write Hebrew and would like to learn to carry on a conversation in Hebrew. Ivrit will be taught by using language in context, exposing students to authentic materials, and by teaching Israeli and Jewish culture. Students will choose to attend either the Sunday morning or Tuesday evening class. In case of an absence or holiday, students are welcome to attend the alternate day as a make-up.

• The Advanced Conversational Hebrew class will meet on Tuesdays from 5:30–7:15pm. This class is suitable for students who are close to proficient in the Hebrew language. The course is designed to develop fluency and increase oral proficiency. Using short stories, newspaper articles, and podcasts as starters, students will have an opportunity to engage in conversation, discussion, and oral presentations.

A desert reception followed to culminate a most enjoyable evening. Men's Club wishes to thank all of the Angels and Sponsors for their support and to all that attended the concert. If you were not able to attend this year's Spring Festival, watch for the date in 2013 and be sure to come.

You couldn’t have asked for better weather on Sunday, June 24th when all of the Havurot of Beth El joined in to enjoy a barbeque. A brainchild of the Membership Committee, found young and “old” in our back yard enjoying every thing that any one could imagine served at a back yard barbeque. There were about fifty Havurah members, some with the kids, enjoying eating and friendly conversation. Many thanks to Chuck Kahalnik and his staff for all of the preparations and delicious food. The event was a success and brought together members of our Congregation that had never met before. We enjoyed the evening and hope that another Havurah Barbeque will be on the calendar next year again.

An Admirable Accomplishment As many of you, or all of you are aware that North Suburban Synagogue Beth El has a very active group of Torah Readers. They are recognized by our Ba'al Korei Institute, and a record is kept as to the number of verses each reader chants. Initially when an individual reads, they are presented with a lapel pin signifying that they have read a minimum number of verses and are encouraged to continue. As they continue reading Torah, they are awarded certificates of accomplishment and a Tikun that is inscribed with their

name. When they attain the level of 500 plus verses, they are presented with a yad, their personal pointer to use when they lain Torah.

One such individual has reached that level and received the award this Shavuot. The recipient is Reuven Solomon. Now residing in Evanston, Reuven grew up in Cheltenham, Pa. and Highland Park, IL. He attended Highland Park High School and then went on to Brandies University. To further his Hebrew education Reuven attended Gratz College and BHSHHS. This is an admirable educational accomplishment. Reuven is 26 years old. His future plans in the Jewish community include teaching Torah reading skills to all ages. He enjoys playing ultimate Frisbee and gardening.

We congratulate Reuven on receiving this award. He is a pride to our Congregation and the community. May he continue reading Torah; we wish him success in all of his future endeavors.

Almost every family that comes to visit and tour the Paul S. and Sylvia Steinberg Pre-School will stop in the corridor to look at the rows of pictures of past Hebrew School and Hebrew High School Graduates. If they are not looking for their picture, they are looking for those of relatives or dear friends. There is an amazing history on these walls. Each visitor has a story to tell and they are usually fond stories. One parent even told me that the building smelled the same as when they were in school. Many of these parents began their Jewish education in our Pre-School. I think that some of them may be expecting to see their teachers as they walk into the classrooms.

While the brick and mortar are the same and many of our goals are similar, much has changed over the years. Our developmentally appropriate curriculum has been designed using the latest research and best practices in child development and early childhood education. Our teachers integrate curriculum content within the classroom and on the playground, including Jewish learning, social and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and fitness and well-being based on national and state educational standards as well as the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Chicago-based Kehillah Jewish Early Childhood Accreditation Project.

Our teachers, with their knowledge of early childhood education as well as their love of young children, are professional hardworking and caring. They challenge each other and continue to bring fresh ideas to our children. They are the backbone of our program. A unique feature of our school is the music program with Ms Carole, who teaches music and movement and Mr. Adam, who leads Shabbat music with our own Rabbi Schwab. Additionally this year Brenda Jackson will be returning as our Art Specialist. Our enrichment classes include cooking, language, art, science, math, sports, movement and music.

When I continue our tour of the building, most parents are amazed to see the improvements that have been made over the years. They can't

wait to show their children our state of the art playground. They are thrilled to see Grossinger-Brickman Activity Center where they can imagine their children running and using their large motor skills even on days they cannot go outside. If they are lucky enough to be in the building on a Friday morning they may get a chance to visit the Field Family Sanctuary where they will see our children singing with Rabbi Schwab and Mr. Adam or visit a classroom where parents share a model Shabbat with their child's class.

Families are an integral part of our school and the synagogue. Our Parent Auxiliary actively works on behalf of our school. Last year they provided funds for our Shabbat Music and Art Teachers. There held a very successful “Art After Dark” Fundraiser to assure the continuation of our Art Program for the coming years. We have many exciting programs planned for this year including our Family Picnic in September, Sukkot Party, Shema Pajama Party, Tu B'Shevat Forest Extravaganza, and Passover Seder. Everyone is welcome at our Tot Shabbat and Terrific Tuesday Open Gym and Parent Forums.

Our school continues to grow and this year we will be using an additional classroom. We have classes for children from infants through pre-kindergarten. Please let your family, friends and neighbors know about our school. Drop by the Pre-School office or contact me by telephone 847-432-2830 or by e mail at [email protected]. I look forward to giving you a tour of our amazing school and perhaps we can find a picture of someone you know on the wall. We wish you all L'Shana Tova.
