Otumoetai College has made an impressive debut at a major

motorcross event, with the school competing strongly at the recent Hauraki Plains College Moto X

Invitation Tournament.Team coach Cliff Tolley, who has competed

at the highest level of international motor-cross, described the nine- member team’s performance in taking eighth place overall from a fi eld of more than 20 teams as “excel-lent”.

“The kids did great – especially when you think most of the other teams had about 30 riders.”

Cliff says motorcross is growing in popularity and believed the result was just the beginning for the college team.

“I’m proud of the team. It was a great result for our fi rst point-based event. Everyone did really well, had fun, rode safely, and gave it their all. I keep hearing people say that they didn’t realize we had a motocross team. Well, I guess they know now. We are defi nitely look-ing forward to more events!”

Cliff says it was great to see all the riders enjoy the day and the excitement of the Slater MX Park track, with its “exciting fi rst corner, big, fast straights, and lots of jumps”.

The meet was a hit with the riders, who all enthused about how much fun it was – with

Brad Holmes saying he loved the adrenaline of being on the start line.

The combined Tauranga Boys’ and Girls’ college combined team, which had been com-peting for a number of years, fi nished fourth overall.

Encouraged by the event’s organisers, Cliff may look at putting on a similar inter-sec-ondary school race in Tauranga if he gets help from other motorcross supporters or parents to help with the event.

“They were really keen for me to organise something here in Tauranga and I’m defi nitely going to look at it if I can some others help-ing. There is a lot that goes into these events with grooming the track and timekeeping and everything else.”

The Hauraki Plains event fi nished on a fun note with both Cliff and assistant coach Eric Farley taking part in a fun parents and coaches race, putting on a show for the crowd. Cliff rode his daughter’s Honda 150R where he was dwarfed on the starting line up by all the bigger bikes – but despite the disadvantage, Cliff gave them all a good challenge and came in fourth while Eric was second.

When Cliff is not helping the team he can sometimes be found working on a bike he is building to race in the veteran’s motorcross class later this year.

For anyone with some country in their veins, winter brings not only a spot of duck shooting,

but also that perennial must see – Mystery Creek Fieldays®.

This year, visitors with a ute on their shopping list can add the SsangYong Actyon Workmate to the list of “must see” test drives, and it may be the fi rst and only test drive they have before writing the cheque.

The four door ute market is the most fi ercely contested sec-tion of the market with manufacturers falling over each other to capture the commercial and farm buyer, and with stronger commodity prices a few farmers are probably giving some strong consideration to upgrading their wheels.

The Actyon has been around for a number of years, loyally supported by family owned Scheaff Motors on Hewletts Road. Priced at $28,686 plus GST, it is a 4wd coming with a price tag signifi cantly less than the typical ute, making it very much a machine for the times.

Buying a ute is not a small outlay for any business, often with little change out of $50,000.

Ssang Yong is plugging a gap in the market for anyone looking for a well-priced machine that does what it needs to do, without draining the bank account in the process. The Workmate’s $28,686 price tag is what the Actyon 2wd typically retails at, highlighting just what a good deal this is.

The Workmate is a variant on the Actyon Sports, less a few of the luxuries that come as standard on the Sports variation. So the Workmate comes with 16” steel wheels, rather than alloys, no Bluetooth or trip computer, no front seat warmers or music input, no cruise control and self levelling headlights.

That is not so much to go without for a machine that comes in well under $30,000. The Workmate also delivers some under the hood bonuses that serious commercial and farm ute users will probably appreciate more – that is a 2.0 litre diesel that delivers 114kW

Workmate a deal for Fieldaysagainst 104kW previously, can tow 2.5 tonne, up from 2.3 tonne, and has a spring lift assisted tail gate.

These are the sorts of features anyone searching for a ute for farming or work are looking for. On top of that, the Work-mate includes a six speed manual gearbox, High-Low transfer for on/off road work and comes with a 100,000km 3 year warranty package.

Obviously it is good enough for that legend of Kiwi tough guys, Colin “Pinetree” Meads, to endorse it. He will be ably promoting the Workmate at this year’s Fieldays, and is offer-ing his gruff endorsement of it across the media at present.

SportyThe Workmate has a sporty profi le and the decent rear

passenger space has not seen the back tray compromised too much for that rear space.

It is a decent width and is arm deep, offering ample room

that would become cavernous with canopies fi tted.Up front, the 2L diesel provides a decent level of pulling

power and is well matched through the six speed transmis-sion.

There is a muted tone to the diesel on the open road, the sound deadening is excellent and the tyres well-suited to more urban tarmac than mucking around in the bush. However, having that high-low ratio is a big bonus for the dollars outlaid, and will help overcome those stickier patches that can prove challenging on site or on farm.

Rear passengers will fi nd adequate leg and head room, and the Actyon Workmate offers that extra fl exibility to combine work with leisure for tradesmen or farmers on a budget and seeking a work-weekend combination. The 2.5 tonne towing capacity will probably suffi ce for most loads.

The Actyon provides the benefi ts of a new ute for the price some sell for second hand, providing ample space and comfort without leaving you feeling you should be stepping around the puddles and mud of the building site once on the job - or on the farm.

The Welcome Bay Cruisers Club is up and running, with the inaugural meeting held at the Welcome Bay Sports Bar on Sunday, May 13.

The ultimate plan for the club - whose members have an 88 VL Commodore, a 383 Chev and a VL Commodore Work 308 under construction – is to eventually give something back to the Welcome Bay community.

A total of 10 club members and six social members were in attendance at the meet-ing, to be held at the same venue at 11am on the fi rst Sunday of every month.

The club has no annual general meeting, no president and no secretary, with the only rule being that club shirts must be worn on meeting days. By Julie Commerer

The Welcome Bay Cruisers Club had its inaugural meeting last week.

Following the fi rst victory of its comeback season, BMW Motorsport now heads to London’s Brands Hatch for the third DTM race of the year on May 20.

Bruno Spengler, at the wheel of the BMW Bank M3 DTM, claimed BMW’s 50th triumph in the DTM at the Lausitzring in Germany on May 6. Augusto Farfus (BR) fi nished the thrilling race in

third place to become the fi rst Brazilian in the history of the DTM to step onto the podium.

After two events in Ger-many, the DTM now moves on to Great Britain. The next stop, Brands Hatch, is synonymous with the long tradition of British motor racing. At just 1.929 kilome-tres, the Indy variant of the circuit, located south-east of

London, may be the shortest track on the race calendar, but it still represents a major chal-lenge to the drivers.

The winding roller-coaster demands great courage and is unforgiving of even the slight-est mistake. The spectacular Paddock Hill corner is the circuit’s showpiece. Coming at the end of the start-fi nish straight, the drivers swing right into a dip at great speed.
