Breeder Referral

As the Breeder Referral contact for the BCA, Div. V, I would like to remind all of the breeders that have been approved in our Division, that if you receive an email or phone call, please answer it. If you do not have puppies, just let the person contacting you know that information. The biggest complaint I receive is that the person reaching to the people on Breeder Referral are not returning calls or emails to him/her. We need to reach these people and help them get the bulldog they are looking for and maybe we will get new members. We will be able to educate them on not buying from color breeders or backyard breeders who are not health-testing. We as breeders need to do our part to help the people reaching out to us, even if it is only education and information.

Thank you, Linda Kilgore

Oregon State Bulldog Club

Happy New Year!!

It is our 70th anniversary - Yay, we made it. The OSBC Club members are especially proud of this milestone since the club was almost nonexistent for five years. A huge thank you goes out to every single exhibitor & every person who donated a basket/raffle item for our fundraisers. Without your YOUR support, the club wouldn’t have been able to come back into existence. It’s now crunch time with much excitement for preparation for the Oregon State Bulldog Club Specialty on January 17, 2018. The OSBC Specialty is partnering with the Rose City Classic, Portland, Oregon January 18, 19, 20, & 21, 2018. We cannot wait to see all of our friends old and new. OSBC club members are busy putting together raffle baskets for the yearly fundraiser. Once again, our ribbons have been beautifully made by Terri Packard right here in Oregon.Good luck to all of the bulldoggers, and to all showing at the Rose City Show.

A big shout out to our members Susy and Chris Holleran, who recently relocated to Oregon. Welcome to Division 5!

Bulldog Club of Utah - submitted by Liz Coates

We have been busy the last few months:Despite it being one of the coldest Strut Your Mutts we can remember, we had a record number of team participants and raised over $500 for Rescue this year. The ‘Mutt Mavens’ organizers as usual, were Kristina Pulsipher, Becklyn Thee, and Jessica Chavez-Smith. Thanks to them for their dedication to the cause and to everyone else who braved the elements that day.

The Bull-o-ween was held indoors due to inclement weather. Thanks to Kim Beck at Pawsatively Dog Training in Murray for the use of her awesome building for our meeting, election, and festivities. We had another huge turnout. Will Clayton said he gave out 72 name tags, but folks just kept coming. There were a lot of participants, both dogs and humans in great costumes this year.

Prior to the Bull-o-ween party, we held a short meeting. The membership present unanimously approved some changes to the Constitution and By-Laws. Most of which were just housekeeping issues: adding e-mail and electronic notification to many articles. The one change of note is that officers and directors will now serve a two-year term instead of one. Election Results: President – Jimmy Bane VP - Becklyn Thee Treasurer - Susan Tibbitts Secretary - Liz Coates Board - Debi Clark, Kriss Durrant, Will Clayton, Shar Kynaston, Jessica Chavez-Smith

The new President, his officers and board members are off and running! The calendar for the upcoming year has been drafted and includes some educational programs, as well as social get-togethers: St. Patricks’s Day, Bull-o-ween, etc. Will Clayton has taken over maintenance of the Bulldog Club of Utah website and updated it. Will is also keeping Facebook up to date. Kristina Pulsipher is still keeping the Rescue site up, current, and running. Much more information will be available via Facebook.

Next was Christmas: the club party was held at the home of Susan Tibbitts. As always, the food was excellent and the companionship better. The “gift” exchange got a little rowdy, as it tends to do. Who would have thought that a WWII ashtray would have been a desirable item? Back in September, the Board agreed we needed to recognize outstanding sportsmanship. And so, the Annual Outstanding Sportsmanship award was born. The award presented at the Christmas party was given to Jimmy Bane. Ringside Jimmy is a true gentleman, always willing to help anyone, a delightful winner, and an even better loser. Well Done, Jimmy!

Don’t forget our Specialty Shows and the Beehive Cluster backup in May. We are pleased to host the Division V Specialty this year. Sweeps Judge is Scott Johnson. Calvin Dykes will judge the Classes and Junior Handling for the Division. The afternoon BCU show will be judged by Henry (Hank) Williams. The Cluster judges are Mr. Mel Saranchuk on Thursday, Friday is Kathy Eke, Saturday is Dean Dickey and Sunday Eva Dickey. Mark your calendars NOW. No host dinner on Wednesday after the show. Open House at Susan’s on Saturday; plan on attending it will be fun!

Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle submitted by David Harrington

The Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle had a busy past few months. In October we held our annual Halloween Party. It was a wonderful time with a great showing of bullies from Bulldog Haven North West, this helped in providing a great number of bulldogs all deck out in colorful costumes.

A number of us went off to Idaho to support our fellow bulldogger's in Boise. If you haven't been to this show, you should. It is always a lot of fun and a good time to get together.

In December we held our last meeting of the year during our Christmas Party held at the home of Gail and Ed Harris. Gail and Ed showed us all how to have fun. Their new baby helped in keeping everyone entertained.

During the meeting, we voted in our 2018 Officers and Board Members. President: David Harrington Vice President: Patricia Whitney Secretary: Tamara Marcotte, Treasure: Sandy Fisher Board Members: Jay Serion, Mia Carper, and Cathy Harrington. I am looking forward to working with all these talented people. Also looking forward to getting all the incredible support that Gail had. Her shoes will be hard to fill.

We are now planning for our show on July 6-8. Right now we have some excellent Bulldog judges lined up; Dara Carr on the 6th, Zac Lane on 7th, and finishing the weekend with Dr. John Little. These judges are on top of three fantastic all breed judges. If you haven't planned your summer, make sure you check us out.

South West Oregon Bulldog Club - submitted by Janice O’Neill

Throughout September and October South West Oregon Bulldog Club members were busy attending various shows and finishing the last minute details on the November 3rd Division V specialty.

Southern Oregon Bulldog Rescue is so proud of Ken and Krystal Garrison. They took on the challenge of a very damaged girl and made her a healthy happy, confident family member.

We had a fun weekend of Barn Hunting! I am so proud of our sweet Annabelle; I never would’ve thought she would get to a point where she felt comfortable trying a dog sport. I decided to have her try barn hunting hoping she would enjoy it. She earned her first ribbon in Novice with a second place! Way to go Annabelle! Baxter earned his first leg in Open with first place and a best in class on Saturday! Dottie earned two legs in Open, two first places with a best in class on Sunday! Best in class means they were the fastest dog to find the two rats, and complete a tunnel and climb. Look at those gorgeous bulldogs and all those ribbons!”

Bulldog Club of Utah Rescuesubmitted by Susan Tibbetts

The Bulldog Club of Utah took in 44 dogs this year. To date we have found homes for most of them: we have three adoptions pending, and two dogs still waiting. Two of the dogs that came to us this year were returned customers: one owner was deployed to Afghanistan for the 2nd time, and one returned to the Humane Society of Utah, which is where we got her in the first place. We were able to help three dogs stay with their owners when they could not afford life-saving care.

Our Olde English Bulldogge numbers were about the same as usual-5.

This year, the dogs that were surrendered were either really young, as young as 9 weeks, a 7 month old, and an 8 month old, or really old. The “winner” in that category was a 12+ year old girl, that they no longer had time for. There were also two 9 year old litter mates, a 10 year old and several well over 8 years old.

Mostly we took in owner surrenders this year; only five dogs came from the various shelters. The dogs were surrendered either due to not enough time, or several due to their “terrible health” problems. Most of those conditions resolved themselves pretty quickly, with a little care and attention.

The dogs this year, even though older, seemed to be healthier than in the past, although most were pretty neglected. The dogs that were in rough shape returned to health with some reasonably minimal effort on rescue’s part. We had one sweet boy who we, unfortunately, had to help cross the rainbow bridge due to severe health problems. He was able to spend his last days with a wonderful family to whom we are grateful.

November 4, 2017

Approval of Agenda –

Minutes from Last Meeting – Approved

Reports of the Officers –

President: Jeff Ryman – He thanked everyone for coming to the meeting in Central Point. Huge thank you to Erica Peters for hosting the meeting & dinner at her house. Jeff said that it has been a good 6 years and then handed over a copy of Robert’s Rule and Gavel to Linda Kilgore – incoming president.

Vice President: Linda had the Champion plaques ready to give out. Linda presented the Division for a check from SWOBC supported entry of $310.30 & Utah Club sent a check to SWOBC & that was also presented. Both of these are funds raised for the 2018 National Show.

Secretary: Tamara was not at the meeting but sent updates from each committee chair in the agenda.

Treasurer: Beth Stephenson Currently the Division has $17,021.11. Beth made a motion that the Division pays the balance owed to the 2018 National of $2,065.00. This was 2nd & approved. Bills submitted from Melanie, Tamara, Jeff & Linda (So Oregon Trophy) were approved.

Reports from Board:

Missi Hanson: No Report

Kaler Howard: No Report but wanted to let everyone know that she & Herbie are back in the ring, finally. What a long road she has had!

Janice O’Neill: SWOBC will have supported entries for the Central Point Shows in 2018. Also that the AKC paperwork has been submitted for the SWOBC shows in March – many details to follow.

Linda Kilgore: No Report

Winn Ryman: No Report

Melanie Trichler: No Report Reports of Councilors:

Liz Coates: Report from Utah: Our elections will be on 10/28 so will let you know the results for the meeting. Right now, everyone is unopposed, so not expecting any surprises.

The shows are on track for May 2nd with Calvin Dykes doing the Division Show which includes Juniors. After "talking" with Linda Kilgore, we're not offering Rally or Obedience. We found a local judge but he needed some kind of guarantee in case he was asked to judge somewhere else, turned it down and then we cancelled. Scott Johnson from Division 3 is doing Sweepstakes. Hank Williams will judge our afternoon show. The cluster has 3 Bulldoggers under contract for the backup shows. Not sure if he'll have a 4th or not. The cluster shows aren't approved yet or I'd tell you who they are. The board should decide if you want the Utah Division show to be a Top 20 qualifier. But as I understand the rules, it doesn't have to be. If it is, we'll put it into our ads....might make a difference to some people. With regard to the shows on May 2nd: will someone be coming who can bring the special trophies or do we need to arrange for shipping? Tell Erica to come....she did it last time and we've not seen her for a long time.

Sadly, no new memberships. But will let you know if some turn up at "Bullyween" on the 28th

Linda Kilgore: No Report

Neil Koeniger: Neil attended the 2017 Councilors at Nationals representing Division V. 1. Bulldogger: The publication has been losing money for the last two years and dragging the club budget down. Starting in 2018 until further notice it will only be published 3 times a year instead of 4. Should save the club about $12,000.

2. On National Show SOP’s the President of BCA must now sign the host hotel contract for shows in the name of BCA or sponsoring divisions.

3. Also on National Show SOP’s the limitation on judging assignments has been extended from 6 months to 1 year.

4. BCA will be making a proposal to AKC to add a color conformation to dogs’ registrations. The confirmation will be either: (1) Tier 1: standard colors or patterns; (2) Tier 2: alternate colors or patterns or (3) Tier 3: disqualifying colors or patterns. The concept would be to put the classifications on all registrations. For Bulldogs there would only be two options- Qualifying or Disqualifying. Other clubs who have “undesireable” colors in their standards may have all three options on their registrations. Its an interesting concept. Will have to see how it goes. May take year for approval if at all.

5. The Council also approved having the Executive Committee revise the Illustrated Standard to reflect the changes approved by the membership related to both coat and eye color. So a new standard should be forthcoming in the next year or two.

Long Range Planning Committee (Ed Harris):

The Bulldogger is going down to 3 issues instead of 4 for the next 2 years due to the BCA losing money. The committee was thinking of raising the BCA dues as well but thought to start with the decrease of the Bulldogger an see where that lands the BCA financially.

BCA membership is down, expenses are up. The one big item we want to push out to the Division membership is next year's National, the contract that we signed is not good, BCA tried to renegotiate but had no real success, if we don’t make minimum hotel nights or food allowances BCA will be responsible for the short fall. So as members of Bulldog Club of America we will pay for next year's National if we show up or not, so let's try and get as many people as possible to show up and support this show and all its activities. This will do a lot to help in Long Range Planning.

Newsletter (Debi Clark): No Report

SOP (Jeff Ryman): Will have some items of the agenda in January. More to come.

Ways & means Committee (Kaler Howard, Jeff & Winn Ryman): The BCA pins have been ordered and delivered. They are very nice and very detailed. They look great on a lapel. As of now, Jeff/Winn have sold quite a few. They are will worth the $10.00 price. As of now this is proving to be a great fundraiser for the Division.

BCARN Division V Rescue (Susan Tibbets): Bulldog Club of Utah Rescue continues to do what it does: taking in lots of dogs, not always from our Division, getting them checked out, and homes found for them; raising money to pay for everything. Getting the occasional call about exotic color dogs. No real agenda issues.

The other rescues in Division 5 are not replying to emails or text messages, about the meeting, or newsletter submissions. It does sound like everyone is paying attention to their own business.

New Business: The motion was approved that the Division will support the Lizard Butte Cluster in Boise, ID next October. Trena Lebsack has offered to help facilitate this. Linda Kilgore to communicate this to Trena that it was approved.

Top 20 for 2018 National – Motion was approved that the breed winner from SWOBC show will be nominated from our Division.

OSBC Specialty Show: Wednesday, January 17th Sweeps Judge Suzie Rose Conformation Judge: Desmond Murphy Lunch will be provided
