January 2020

New year’s is always a great time to re-

flect on the lessons learned and cele-

brate successes of the prior year. For us

at the Village, its been a great year and

regardless of some of the challenges we

have faced, I am very proud of our

Board, Committees, and Staff for anoth-

er great year of continuous improve-

ment and forward momentum.

Some of the highlights for the year in-

clude:

• Implementation of the fob system at

the pool, allowing use to reduce la-

bor costs and streamline distribution

of pool passes.

• In-house crack filling of 2/3rds of the

Village (saving the association >$30k)

along with orchestrating sealcoating

of those same roads.

• Taking over Pro Shop operations

with minimal financial impact to the

Village.

• Replacement of the Security Vehicle

for an annual savings of over $10k in

fuel costs.

• Approval of an off-leash area for all

of your pets.

• Initiating community discussions re-

lated to stormwater and the Slough.

• Development and first phase imple-

mentation of a community-wide

landscape improvement plan.

• Creation of a Capital Asset Planning

committee with special focus on the

Marina and long term plans for re-

placement.

• Prioritization of marina repairs.

• Pool shower room remodel.

• Pool painting/resurfacing.

• Took over janitorial services inhouse

for an overall savings.

• Replaced clubhouse windows.

• Upgraded/replaced kayak racks.

Some of the lessons learned include:

• Never underestimate the power of

social media.

• Not all technology is easy to learn,

and we need to do better and help-

ing owners adopt & understand

some of the changes we make.

In addition to reflection, this is also an

opportunity to get excited about the

many things to come in the next year.

While the Board still needs to prioritize

the overall goals for the community and

administration, some priorities we have

for the year include:

• Implement online visitor/guest list

management.

• Explore and update the many poli-

cies/rules that affect Village life – are

they relevant, are they clear, and do

they serve the Village the very best.

• Collect proposals from Marina con-

tractors and develop the long term

solution/strategy for Marina repair

and replacement.

• Continue beautification of common

area landscaping (ongoing implemen-

tation of landscape improvement

plan).

• Dredging of the mouth of the mari-

na.

Stafholt Good Samaritan Center:

is where the residents can use their

“Bingo Bucks,” earned while playing bin-

go, to shop for family and themselves for

small items. The “store” could use

your help to replenish the tables

after the holidays with items for

the residents to purchase. Especially

needed are items for ladies - blouses and

tops size Med. and Large are needed.

For men – polo or long sleeved shirts

are needed, size L and XL. If you have

further questions, please contact Melanie

Helping Hands: The Social Club has a

wonderful group of volunteers who are

available to provide temporary assistance

to residents in the Village who are sick,

recovering from surgery or otherwise

need a helping hand. Some of the short-

term assistance we can provide include

meals, rides to doctor appointments and

medical treatments, grocery shopping,

etc. We also have a good supply of

medical equipment (bed rails, crutches,

folding wheelchairs, transfer wheelchairs,

shower chairs, walkers, toilet risers, nifty

grabbers, etc.) which is available on a

temporary basis. There is a folding

wheelchair ramp available for short-term

loan to Village residents. If you or

someone you know needs a "helping

hand," please call Linda at 206-276-3713.

When borrowing or returning equip-

ment or requesting other Helping Hand

services, Linda is the one to call. And

thank you for returning all equipment in

a sanitized condition. If you are think-

ing of donating equipment to Helping

Hands, please make sure the equipment

is in good condition, sanitized, and can

be safely used by BBVCC residents.

Looking Back Across our

Wake: 2019 Holiday Party

and Bridge Election / Instal-

lation 50 Members and

residents attended our

December 7 Holiday Party.

Great decorations and

desserts (churros cheese-

cake, Mexican chocolate

cookies, Mexican wedding

cookies, fruit plate

and sopapillas) were

provided by the So-

cial Committee. Cal-

ifornia Tacos of Bel-

lingham catered the

main fare with a de-

licious Mexican Fi-

esta fare. Our Members

stepped up to assist with

food preparation, decorat-

ing, set up and clean up. A

lot of people just pitched

in to help. THANK YOU!

We are aggressively looking to come up with new opportunities, innovative and fun

ways to enhance Membership relationships, learning and involvement. As an example,

we are working with the USCG Auxiliary to see if we can get a USCG FAST boat to

be at Vessel Safety Day / SWAP Meet which is on April 4th, 2020.

We are always open for your thoughts on activities that you think would be

worthwhile, just email Dave Sawicki.

What’s on the Horizon?

Work on planning activities / tasks for 2020 has already started. We have

“coordinators” in place & initial dates for:

Membership Brunch Feb. 8 Coordinator needed

Education Events / seminars (5) start Feb. 19 Coordinators needed

Sawicki

Sucia Island State Park Cruise and Clean Up April 17>19 Marion and Ralph Falk

These “coordinators” will need helpers to put together the detailed plans for the

events, so stay tuned for more details. We always get a better result when we get lots

of involvement. Activities that have Coordinators will be held and conducted with even

greater vigor than last year. Since we have a written record of these events in the past,

as well as mentors, Coordinators don’t have to start their planning from scratch and

can add their new ideas as well. If we don’t get Coordinators, then we will have to de-

cide on the scale of the activities or if there is enough interest to do it.

INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO

BOAT AND NEED TO FIND

SOURCES OF TRAINING AND

MATERIALS? (by Jerry Stege - BBVYC

Member and Power Squadron Member):

Here is a brief description of the Belling-

ham Sail and Power Squadron and their

web site. Going to the web site one finds

the American Boating Course (ABC) is

featured. Clicking on "Education" one

finds a complete description of both the

ABC course all the all the other educa-

tion opportunities available through the

Squadron. After taking every course but

for one advanced Celestial Navigation

Course and after having taught many of

these courses, I find this is an excellent

way to improve my boating skills.

Bellingham Sail and Power Squadron and

also boatingisfun.org

The United States Power Squadrons®, a

non-profit organization, through the Bel-

lingham Sail and Power Squadron (BSPS),

a local chapter, has served our communi-

ty for over 60 years, teaching safer boat-

ing and organizing fun events.
