Toprock generally refers to any string of steps performed from a standing position. It is usually the first and foremost

opening display of style, though dancers often transition from other aspects of breaking to toprock and back. Toprock has a variety of steps which can each be varied according to the dancer’s expression (ie. aggressive, calm, excited). A great deal of freedom is allowed in the definition of toprock: as long as the dancer maintains cleanness, form and the b-boy attitude. The photos below demonstrate a basic toprock step, rocking back forth crossing your legs, and moving your arms showing bboy attitude. generally refers to any string of steps performed from a standing position. Start in a standing position, get ready to feel the music and move with the beat.

Raise your arms up, this will begin your toprock step.

Cross your right leg over our left and stick out your arms.

Return to your starting position

Now cross your left leg over your right. This completes this toprock step. Repeat until satisfied.

Feel the music and just move

Pg. 4 - Bboy Magazine - Six Step Tanvir Rahman

The Six Step is the most basic

footwork sequence and serves as a foundation for more complicated footwork patterns. As the name implies the six step involves 6 steps. The standard version starts in push up

position with the feet spread apart. To start, the left hand lifts, and the right foot is placed where that hand

used to be. As weight shifts onto the right hand and foot, the left leg is moved up into

the crook of the right knee. The right leg swings around in front of the right hand and comes down so that the bboy’s legs

are in a crab position. Meanwhile, he

switches hands so that the left hand

returns to the ground and the right hand flies up. The left leg now swings around in a wide arc and wraps around the right. The right leg moves back into its original push-up spot.Lastly, the left leg pulls back while the right hand comes down to complete the push-up position. The breaker is now back in the starting position and may continue with step 1. The six step can done c-clockwise, or clockwise.Remember to always practice so that your mind instantly remembers the steps and it becomes muscle memory.
