EDITORIAL 2013 / BBC WEEKS 52 & 53 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

BBC Scotland unwraps its package of treats for audiences this Christmas and Hogmanay

A sack full of goodies has been delivered by BBC Scotland for its audiences to enjoy throughout the festive schedules. The broadcaster today, Wednesday 4 December, released a tasty mix of comedy, drama, music and factual programming in its festive fare for television, radio and online. Fresh from winning his second Scottish Bafta, Limmy gives his distinctive take on the season of goodwill. Limmy’s Show! Christmas Special, BBC Two Scotland, Sunday, 22 December, features favourite characters such as Jacqueline McCafferty, Dee Dee and Falconhoof. Alex Norton goes on a Scottish accent safari in Dream Me Up Scotty!, BBC Two Scotland, Monday, 23 December. He hunts for the good, the bad and the totally ‘bowfin’ among Caledonian accents which have aired on the big and small screen. In River City, BBC One Scotland, on Christmas Eve, Nicole (Holly Jack) decides to break loose from the pressure of being a mum for a stress-busting night out - but it’s a decision which has far reaching consequences. In the Hogmanay visit to Shieldinch a flirtatious relationship between Zinnie (Nalini Chetty) and Jamie (Mark Rowley) takes a shocking turn. Also on BBC One Scotland on Christmas Eve, Sally Magnusson introduces Christmas Celebration from Dunfermline Abbey. Popular traditional carols are sung by the congregation and accompanied by brass quintet, Alba Brass, and organist Norman Mitchell, while Jamie McDougall sings a new carol from Paul Mealor, Professor of composition at Aberdeen University. Cameron McNeish, takes the audience on a new journey through the beautiful Scottish countryside in a two-parter, The Pilgrim’s Trail – an Adventure Show Special. Airing on 26 and 27 December on BBC Two Scotland, the programmes follow a new coast to coast walk across the Highlands from Argyll to Easter Ross. On BBC One Scotland on Friday 27 December The Proclaimers Live at Stirling Castle delivers a fantastic set of their best loved tracks from a concert recorded live at Hogmanay 2012 on the Esplanade of the historic castle - one of Scotland’s most popular bands playing their classic tracks at one of the country’s most iconic locations. Following the River City episode on Hogmanay, Two Doors Down, on BBC One Scotland and network, is a one-off comedy set in a chaotic New Year’s party thrown by Eric Baird (Alex Norton) and his wife Beth (Arabella Weir). Written by Simon Carlyle (Benidorm, No Holds Bard) the comedy’s stellar cast also includes Kevin Guthrie, Daniela Nardini, Jonathan Watson, Doon MacKichan and Greg McHugh. It’s followed on BBC One Scotland by How Auld Lang Syne Took Over the World, a documentary looking at a song which has become one of Scotland’s biggest cultural exports, having featured in more than 170 films. Dougie Vipond presents and contributors include Sir Cliff Richard, Kevin McKidd and Alan Cumming. Then, Only An Excuse? returns to take a satirical look at the past year with the customary nod to the world of football. Jonathan Watson leads the line as the team take another flying header at events and people that have made the headlines both on and off the pitch.

Jackie Bird leads the countdown to the bells on Princes Street in Edinburgh in Hogmanay Live! while the party continues with Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain, at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow, and Catriona Shearer joins the celebrations at Stirling Castle with performances from Deacon Blue. There will also be a nationwide sing-a-long of Auld Lang Syne, which viewers are being asked to join in with now, by filming themselves singing the song and sending their performance to BBC Scotland. More information is available at bbc.co.uk/Hogmanay On New Year’s Day, Glasgow Big Night Out is a funny and affectionate portrait of a great city through the eyes of the stars who have played there and the audiences who loved them. Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Laurel and Hardy, Danny Kaye, Stanley Baxter and Kevin Bridges are just a few of those who came, who saw and who conquered some of toughest audiences in the country. On Thursday 2 January on BBC Two, Rab C Nesbitt faces hard times that are harder than ever. Inspired by Robin Hood, Rab restyles himself as a new breed of heroic outlaw and hides out in a local park. Not so much Robin Hood as Rab in Hoodie. And over on BBC Radio Scotland, there’s a sprinkling of stars across the schedule as Brian Cox, Niamh Cusack, Lorraine Kelly and Rod Stewart feature among the highlights. On Christmas Day, in a special Stark Talk, Edi talks to Lorraine Kelly about her childhood, her days as a cub reporter, her break into breakfast television and about the loves of her life: husband Steve, daughter Rosie - and Dundee. In Christmas Morning with Cathy MacDonald and Ricky Ross, the hosts are joined by Alexander McCall-Smith and Angus Peter Campbell for a celebration of music, Christmas-inspired writing and great conversation. Edith Bowman looks back to 13 October 1963 when the Beatles headlined live at the London Palladium and ‘Beatlemania’ was born. The week before they were performing to screaming crowds in Kirkcaldy and in The Beatles in Fife, Edith talks to some of the lucky few who were there. Then, Brian Cox and Niamh Cusack star in Lucy Gannon’s comic drama Topaz about poet William Topaz McGonagle who decides to walk from Dundee to Balmoral to see Queen Victoria. There’s also music and reflection, as the day begins with the Watchnight Service at midnight on Christmas Eve. The Reverend Gayle Taylor and the Reverend Rolf Billes lead the congregation of Colinton Parish Church in Edinburgh in carols. Also on Christmas Day, Jamie MacDougall joins the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (SSO) for their Christmas Classics concert, recorded at Aberdeen’s Music Hall under the baton of conductor Stephen Bell. Then there’s Magic at the Movies with the SSO featuring highlights from their festive concert of some of the best-loved music from cinema, recorded at City Halls in Glasgow. Bryan Burnett and Janice Forsyth will be partying into 2014 in style with The Hogmanay Show, live before an audience from BBC Scotland’s headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow, with music from Ceilidh Minogue and The Shiverin Sheiks. On New Year’s Day in the evening, there’s Bryan Burnett meets The Waterboys, with Bryan talking to the group’s frontman Mike Scott, followed by highlights from their Waterboys at Glasgow Barrowlands concert in December.

Limmy’s Show! Christmas Special NEW Sunday 22 December BBC Two Scotland, 10.00-10.30pm Fresh from winning his second BAFTA Scotland award for Best Comedy & Entertainment programme, Limmy delivers his unique take on the season of goodwill. Fans and new viewers alike are in for a real treat as the show’s best-known characters find themselves in festive situations and Limmy brings his distinct style of dark-hearted humour to proceedings. The nation's favourite phone-in host, Falconhoof, is keen to bestow some festive spirit on one of the Adventurecall players; zoned-out waster, Dee Dee, is rudely awoken by some very spooky visitors; lovable ex-junkie with the chip on her shoulder, Jacqueline McCafferty, has a very important present to buy; and it's the welcome return of the silver-haired executive with delinquent tendencies, Mr Mulvaney, who's busy rehearsing his speech for the office party. Adding to the character pieces are more of Limmy's razor sharp observations. There's a Christmas morning that young Limmy will never forget in the 'Christmas of Yesteryear', and we join Limmy and his pals at a house party where there are some troublesome guests, pranks and a special musical performance. Brian Limond plays the main characters and he is supported by his cast: Paul McCole, Alan McHugh and Kirstin McLean who play a range of characters and roles. Limmy's Show! is a Comedy Unit production for BBC Scotland. Jim Gough _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

MONDAY 23 DECEMBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS /BBC WEEK 52 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dream Me Up Scotty! NEW Monday 23 December BBC One Scotland, 9.00-10.00pm Over the years, the sound of Scotland on screen has been anything but subtle. In Dream Me Up Scotty! Alex Norton goes on a Scottish accent safari hunting for the good, the bad and the totally ‘bowfin’ through the archives. Alex discovers how the Scottish accent has been used and abused on film and television and how it ties into our

cultural identity. The very notion of Scottishness is often built around our accent from the genteel highlander in

Whisky Galore to the tough Glasgow hard men in Just Another Saturday, as well as the fairytale accent of Shrek.

Alex says: “It’s always been tricky trying to put an accurate depiction of our wee country up on the big screen. I tell you, the whole thing is just a grammatical guddle.” Dream Me Up Scotty! features archive clips from the big screen including Brave, Brigadoon, Highlander, Trainspotting and Braveheart as well as TV classics including Chewin’ The Fat, Rab C Nesbitt, Tutti Frutti and Looking After Jo Jo, amongst others. It highlights how the Scots accent lends itself well to the fine art of swearing; the redubbing abomination of Gregory’s Girl and That Sinking Feeling for international audiences; and Alex’s delivers a masterclass on how to deliver top notch Scotch to would-be actors. Including insights from Brian Cox, James Cosmo, Sanjeev Kohli, Siobhan Redmond, Greg McHugh, Katy Murphy, comedian Susan Calman, Rab C creator Iain Pattison, Dream Me Up Scotty! is a humorous look at what happens when Tinseltown paints its tonsils tartan. Dream Me Up Scotty! is a Hopscotch Films production for BBC Scotland.

The walk finishes at a Pictish site which has been described as Scotland’s best kept secret – an 8

th century monastic settlement in Easter Ross that was one of the most important artistic and

manufacturing centres in Europe. The Adventure Show is a Triple Echo production for BBC Scotland. Jim Gough _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Cunnart NEW Friday 27 December BBC ALBA, 9.00 – 10.00pm Cunnart questions what goes through your mind as you are walking towards a bomb. Get this and many other questions answered by Donald MacDonald who has spent the last twenty years disposing of landmines and bombs in some of the world's most troubled regions. Cunnart offers a glimpse into his world. In Afghanistan, which is so dangerous that he is hardly able to leave the compound in which he lives, we see the challenges he faces in trying to do his job. South Sudan is the newest country on earth. Don is tasked with organising teams and recruiting locals to clear land littered with unexploded bombs and landmines after a civil war which lasted over two decades. Don recalls his time in Laos, the most bombed country in the world, where the locals were desperate for their contaminated land to be freed from bombs and landmines, a legacy of the Vietnam War. Speaking to Don's family, we gain an insight into their pride in his job, where he saves lives, but also on the impact that it has had on their lives as he continues to work in places that most of us would never dream of going to, doing a job which would terrify the majority of people. The Battle of Festubert was a pivotal moment for the Cameron Highlanders during WW1 and the devastating effects were keenly felt in Scotland. The killing fields of Festubert are a long way from the shinty fields of the Highlands, but the war brought both places tragically closer. For shinty-playing communities like Portree, Kingussie and Beauly, Festubert is the darkest part of their history, the battle having cost them dearly in lives. During the war years competitive shinty ceased because so many players answered the call to arms. Gaisgich na Camanachd looks at the calamitous loss of potential to communities and towns and reveals how World War One almost killed shinty off. Lorna Gardner / Gary McQueen

How Auld Lang Syne Took Over The World , Ep 1/1 NEW Tuesday 31 December - Hogmanay BBC One Scotland, 10.20-11.15pm

Page 16: BBC WEEK 52, 21 - 27 December 2013 BBC WEEK 53, 28 ...

It has become one of Scotland’s biggest cultural exports, featured in more than 170 films from It’s a Wonderful Life

to When Harry Met Sally and Sex in the City, and recorded renditions range from a pumped up version by Mariah

Carey to a Cockney take by Chas ‘n Dave. And then, there’s its special meaning for Scots and others, across the globe, at this time of year. This new BBC Scotland documentary, presented by Dougie Vipond, takes an affectionate look at How Auld Lang

Syne Took Over the World from its humble origins in the late 1700s when Robert Burns penned the words…

To the times in history, when its poignancy perfectly captured the moment such as the unofficial truce along the

Western Front in 1914 when both sides sang Auld Lang Syne. As well as reflecting on the history of the song,

Dougie meets people from various points around the world who have taken it to their hearts in surprising ways,

including Japanese traders who play it out as they shut up shop for the night.

Also sharing their thoughts, about the song and what it means to them – and their favourite or otherwise renditions –

are a range of entertainers from Sidney Devine to Sir Cliff Richard, from Alan Cumming to Kevin McKidd, Karen

Dunbar, Tony Roper, and Clare Grogan.

And of course the programme features some snippets of the song itself including some remarkable and some bizarre

performances.

Dougie Vipond explains “Auld Lang Syne is our best known musical export. We took it to the world and it was

embraced, adopted and adapted wherever it went. But come midnight on Hogmanay, no matter where you are or

who you are with, we’re all singing it out loud… Knowing that it’s Scottish makes it just that wee bit extra special.”

Glasgow: Big Night Out NEW Wednesday 1 January BBC Two, 9.00-10.00pm Glasgow. Glasgow Empire. Two words to send a chill through the soul of a ‘Sassenach’ comic. The riotous and ruthless audience welcoming comics with an equal measure of heckles and rivets (from the shipyards). It’s no wonder that Des O’Connor chose the option of pretending to faint rather than continuing his with his act. But Glasgow as also the place where many of the country’s best loved stars got their first big break: Nicholas Parsons, The Krankies and the legendary Stanley Baxter. If you were a Scot you got an easier time of it but the real love was reserved for those Hollywood greats who chose to make the journey north. People like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Laurel and Hardy, Roy Rogers and Trigger (the only horse to stay at Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel – allegedly). Escape artist Harry Houdini even managed to get trapped in a WC. But the one star who really won this tough crowd over was the magical Danny Kaye. People still recall him sitting with his legs dangling over his hotel balcony while serenading the crowd below with Ballin’ the Jack. Glasgow: Big Night Out is a funny, affectionate portrait of a great city through the eyes of the stars who played there and the audiences who loved them. The entertainers who choose to spend their weekends tucked between bar and juke-box see social life from a very different perspective. They require hundreds of songs in their repertoire and the ability to keep on rocking with whatever the regular's request. 'Nollie' Mackinnon maintains a golf-course by day; he has performed in hotel bars in Uist and Barra for 30 years. With over 300 songs to choose from the halcyon music just keeps on rolling. Sandra MacBeth performs in the Espy Bar, Portobello. With a vocal range from Joni Mitchell to Outcast, her cover versions light up the bar and everyone sings along.
