Summary – July-October 2015
A great third quarter for Radio 4, as reach sat at
10.8m average weekly listeners, adding 205K
listeners since last quarter, and remaining fairly
stable compared to last year (up 1%). This
means Radio 4 continues to reach a fifth (20%)
of all adults in the UK, a position that it has
enjoyed for over ten years.
Share also remained in a good position, staying
steady on the quarter at 11.7% of all listening,
and only slightly down on last year’s 11.9% share.
For average amount of listening Q3 2015 sat at
11:16 hrs per person for Radio 4.
By demographic, Radio 4 continued to skew
towards an older audience with the average
age remaining steady at 56 (slightly up on last
year’s 55). The gender profile remained fairly
steady, with 5.6m male listeners a week (52% of
the total) and 5.2m female listeners (49% of the
total). By social grade, Radio 4 remained heavily
skewed towards ABC1 audiences, making up a
steady 77% of all listeners.
There were records for Radio 4’s digital listening,
with FM share of hours at its lowest ever at 51%
(this mirrors the trends for all radio this quarter).
Meanwhile there was record share of listening
via the internet at 4.3% - beating the previous
record last quarter of 4.0%.
