“Let us resolve that we the people will build an American opportunity society in which all of us--white and black, rich and poor, young and old--will go forward together arm in arm. Again, let us remember that though our heritage is one of blood-lines from every corner of the Earth, we are all Americans pledged to carry on this last, best hope of man on Earth. They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” Ronald Reagan - 40th Presi-dent of the United States

This week we are taking a break from our Scrapbooking for Less to have some Valentine’s Day Fun. Below is an example of a fun one page mini scrapbook that you can make. Using a 12”x12” cardstock you can create the mini book and then decorate with other papers, embellishments, etc. When you are done it all folds up into a small 6” tall x 4” wide book that you can add a simple closure to.You can include a pocket on a page to keep your small Valentine, ticket stub, or any other small trinket from the day.

• In the picture each line is a fold. First you fold the paper in half then fold it into thirds. I used a pencil to mark the thirds before folding. Add as much as you want, just remember that the more you add the less condensed your album will be when folded. And if you need more space you can do some hinge folds. This is when you make two folds to each side of your intial fold lines. This gives you a little more room to add things.

Jesus Loves You!
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the dark-ness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concern-ing that light, so that through him all might be-lieve. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.~ John 1:1-11

Limited access highways leave you with limited options. Let me explain. If you’re on the PA Turn-pike during a winter storm emergency with heavy snowfall, poor visibility, and deteriorating driving conditions, you are pretty much restricted to moving forward with traffi c. We’re all familiar with the Turn-pike’s rolling topography as it climbs and descends across PA. All it takes is two vehicles traveling side-by-side, often tractor-trailers, to spin out on a snow-covered incline to block both travel lanes. Suddenly, America’s fi rst limited access highway with its con-crete barrier to your left and the guardrail to your right becomes a multi-mile long parking lot. Whether you like it or not, if you are one of poten-tially thousands of motorists unexpectedly stranded in a vehicle immobilized by a winter storm, the last thing you want to be is unprepared or the next 12, 18, or 24+ hours could be some of the most miser-able time you’ve ever spent in your life. Regardless of your outdoor experience, dealing with the snow, cold temperatures, and wind chill with whatever re-sources you have available becomes your primary concern for the foreseeable future as you wait for road crews, tow trucks, police, and other profession-als to get ahead of the storm and get traffi c fl owing again on the limited access highway. The recent PA Turnpike multi-mile impasse on Jan.22-23, 2016 saw Governor Wolf call upon the PA National Guard to assist in the recovery efforts. This brought back memories, since during the previous winter storm emergency in Feb. 2010 that snarled the PA Turnpike and almost shut down Pittsburgh and other Western PA municipalities for several days, I had the weighty responsibility serving as the Commander of the PA Army and Air Guardsmen/women who responded to the 27+ inches of snow and frigid cold that blanketed Southwestern PA. Al-low me to share some “Lessons Learned” from our multi-day efforts to assist stranded motorists, many who didn’t heed winter storm warnings and were completely unprepared for their plight. While this year may be atypical, it is winter in West-ern PA and that means snow, cold, and treacherous driving conditions will come at some point. It is key to dress properly for conditions or at least have extra clothing, to include coats, hat, and gloves, for every-one in the vehicle. (We encountered many severely cold motorists, wearing only a hoodie or light jacket, because they only anticipated being out for a short time and didn’t plan on getting stuck.) It’s an excel-lent idea to have a sleeping bag or blanket in the ve-hicle for each occupant, since being stranded may necessitate idling the vehicle for only short periods to conserve fuel or risk running out. (A vehicle with no fuel becomes a very cold metal box in a winter emergency.) We encountered numerous people with serious medical conditions who were not prepared, so think in advance of taking additional heart, diabetes, or other necessary medicines with you, should you be stranded for 24+ hours. Parents need to consider their infants and pack additional warm clothing, diapers, and formula to last for a multi-day period. Twenty-four to 36 hours is a long time to go without eating or drinking something, so bring along some snacks or preferably something more substantial, along with water bottles, to sustain all occupants until you get out of the situation. (PA Guardsmen handing out MREs and bottled water were a welcome sight for hundreds of stranded motorists in Feb. 2010.) Never permit your fuel level to get below 1 ⁄ 2 a tank in a winter storm, should you become stranded and need to periodically idle the vehicle to keep warm. (Occasionally, get out and clear your exhaust pipe to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.) No one plans to fail, they just fail to plan. If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am noth-ing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Enduring LoveFebruary 13, 2009
Read: 1 Corinthians 13:1-8
[Love] bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. —1 Corinthians 13:7
Like many people, I enjoy the Google homepage artwork that appears on special days and holidays. On Valentine’s Day 2008, the artistic logo showed an older couple—a man with a cane and a white-haired woman—walking hand in hand as the woman held two heart-shaped balloons. It was a beautiful reminder that while our culture glorifi es youthful romance, true love has many stages during our jour-ney through life.
Paul’s great essay in 1 Corinthians 13 celebrates the depth and tenacity of the love that carries us beyond self-interest and mere affection. “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (vv.4-8).
Brian Wren has captured this reality in hismoving hymn, “When Love Is Found”:
When love is tried as loved ones change,Hold still to hope though all seems strange,
Till ease returns, and love grows wiseThrough listening ears and opened eyes.
© Hope Publishing Co.
When our commitments are tested in the fi res of life, no matter what diffi culties we face, may God grant us a greater experience of His enduring love and the grace to demonstrate it each day.
God’s love is a fabric that never fades, no matter how often it is washed in the waters of adversity.

* It was columnist and editor Doug Larson who made the following sage observation: “Few things are more satisfying than seeing your children have teenagers of their own.”
* Those who study such things say that your brain takes about 0.0004 seconds to retrieve a memory.
* You might be surprised to learn that the person who has been nominated for more Academy Awards than any other living per-son is neither an actor nor a director. American composer John Williams -- who created scores for such memorable fi lms as the “Star Wars” series, “Jaws,” “Schindler’s List,” “Jurassic Park,” the “In-diana Jones” series, “Fid-dler on the Roof” and the fi rst three “Harry Potter” movies -- has (so far) been nominated for a whopping 50 Oscars, and he has tak-en home fi ve of the statu-ettes. He’s also received three Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes and 22 Grammy Awards -- with an astounding 65 Grammy nominations to his name.

Q: Recently, my wife received a call from someone claiming to be from our electric com-pany, offering us a “free energy audit.” I’m suspi-cious. Nothing is really for free, and I’ve heard stories of fraudsters get-ting money from senior citizens by posing as utility employees. Have you heard of this energy audit before? How canI confi rm that it’s real or not? — Jesse F., Little Rock, Ark. ©King FeaturesA: Many utility com-panies do offer energy savings programs. The programs vary, but they often include some type of review of your current energy usage (something like an en-ergy audit). Still, you’re always right to be alittle suspicious of generous offers. Your utility may very well have a free energy audit program. The way tofi nd out is to call the cus-tomer-service number on your latest utility bill.Whether the original energy audit offer is legitimate or not, ask the customer service associate if the utilityoffers any sort of energy savings program - par-ticularly one for seniorcitizens. Some offer energy audit kits, while others may refer you to a thirdparty energy audit service. An energy audit basically takesstock of how effi ciently your home is heated or cooled, and tries to pin-point areas of the house where air is escaping. This is sometimes done by setting up a piece of equipment known as a “blower door” in the frame of your home’s front door. The blowerdoor changes the air pressure inside the house slightly - enough for the audit provider’s sensors, often infrared,to detect where that air

is escaping. From there, the provider recom-mends a few solutions. Some energy audits are simple walk throughs of your house, followedby recommendations to reduce energy use, such as replacing incandes-cent bulbs with newer fl ourescent bulbs. Other audits are do-it-yourselfand might be as simple as fi lling out an online questionnaire. In any case, it’s worth it to fi nd out if a low-cost or free energy audit is available.
• To ripen a green tomato, wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or place it in a paper bag. It can then be left on the counter for several days to ripen. ©King Features• To keep ice crystals from forming on the top of your quart of ice cream, just cut a square of plastic wrap and push it down onto the surface of the ice cream each time you scoop a bowlfulout. It peels off easily when you’re ready for another helping, but there’s no ice! It works for me!” — T.D. in NE• “You can get fi ve or six more uses out of a pump-top lotion bottleif you cut off the top to access the lotion inside that doesn’t come outof the pump once the level is too low. You’d be surprised how much is still in there!• “If you add a teaspoon of sugar to your biscuit mix or to the dough forrolls, it will help them to brown well and they will come out of the oven with golden tops.” - Jan R. of Michigan• F.J. of Texas writes: “Keep a fresh roll of unscented toilet tissue in the kitchen to clean up the stove and coun-tertop. It works well be-cause of its absorbency, and it saves money onexpensive paper towels.”
