Dear PD Active Community, Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la…Ho-ho-ho! And maybe we don’t feel so jolly, or maybe we do. But it’s certainly a time for reflection, and for wearing red (you look fabulous in red!) and for generosity, and especially for kindness, to ourselves as well as to others. Keep in mind that usually the best gift we can give is the gift of ourselves, our attention to someone who needs or wants it. Somebody once said, “listening is an act of love.” So as you hurry about your holidays, remember to listen, really listen. That’s being very generous, and very very good, and no doubt Santa will reward you for it. Dear PD Active Community,

Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la…Ho-ho-ho! And maybe we don’t feel so jolly, or maybe we do. But it’s certainly a time for reflection, and for wearing red (you look fabulous in red!) and for generosity, and especially for kindness, to ourselves as well as to others. Ann was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991. For many years after her diagnosis, she continued working as the Lab Director until she retired in 2006.

In 2010, Ann underwent Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery, which granted her a good year-plus with much-reduced tremors and dyskenesia, but in the spring of 2012, Ann began to have balance problems, which led to a cascading series of complications.

Ann served on the Board of PD Active for many years, founded the PD Chorus “The Tremolos” and participated in the 2011 Peace About Life program with dNaga Dance company.

Page 3: bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb In … · Tremolos” and participated in the 2011 Peace About Life program with dNaga Dance company. On November 7, the Tremolos – together

On November 7, the Tremolos – together with Lauren Carley, the music director – visited Ann at the Alameda Care Center and sang for her and several other residents. Though she was clearly weakened and looked ethereal, as always she beamed her wonderful smile in appreciation.

An obituary with many details of Ann’s accomplished life appeared in the online publi-cation “Berkeleyside,” accessible via the link:

http://www.berkeleyside.com/2012/11/21/ann-judith-chandler-served-berkeley-with-infectious-smile/

Ann requested that any donations in her honor be made to PD Active or the Berkeley Public Library.

Condolences to the family can be sent to Ann’s home address: 1836 Cedar Street, Berkeley, 94703.

Her friends are planning a celebration of her life for January, 2013. When more is known, we will pass on the announcement to the PD Active community.

Some people responded to our email notice with notes of condolence and expressions of fondness for Ann:

“Awww. I’m sad to hear this. I only met her once or twice and found her to be utterly alive and delightful.” Margaret Rowlands

“She was quite something. I loved dancing with her in Peace About Life.” Scott Holloway

“David and I are very saddened to hear of Ann’s death. We send our condolences to her family and PD friends. Our best,” David and Megan Berman

“Sorry to hear this sad news. Please convey my condolence to the bereaved family.” Deepak Chapa

“I hope someone will write from the heart about the life of Ann Chandler and her recent death. Her passing is a big loss for PD Active and for all who knew this kind, smart, and terrific woman.” Shireen Burns

More sad news ...Condolences to Margaret Rowlands, who told us that her life partner, Greg Nybo, passed away just past midnight on November 20th. He was doing pretty well, and then in the last month or so, everything became very difficult. Greg’s sons and Margaret will plan some sort of service/celebration - probably after the holidays. They’ll let us know more at a later date.

December Report from the MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE(Ann VanSteenberg, Frances Tobriner, Frieda Dilloo, Geraldine Seery, Jane Levy, and John Hess)

Our concern is the well-being of PD Active members. One of our functions is contacting members and their support people when something seems amiss and, with their permission, informing the community.

DECEMBER REPORTRecuperatingTim Gordon had a knee replacement on November 12th. He is recovering well, with the help of his wife Donna’s devoted and expert care. We hope to see him before long, riding along swiftly on his bicycle and gliding across the dance floor. Donna says: “Truth told, he is on the way to full ‘bionic’ status, having already had the other knee and an ankle replaced during the past five years. (Enough, already!)”

Beverly Shaver would like to get more involved with PD Active and to attend some of the groups. But since she no longer drives she has trouble getting there. She would greatly appreciate finding someone who could give her a ride. She lives in the El Cerrito hills, off Cutting, below the Arlington. 510-235-8746.

Bracha Tannenbaum (Yoga) had a hip replacement on 29 October, which was very successful, but a few days ago she fell and broke her ankle in three places and is having surgery on 28 November. She loves the community support. Telephone: 510-525-5477. We send Bracha our best wishes for a speedy recovery! Bracha, we miss seeing your great smile and the beautiful artistic coats you wear and make by hand!

Our best wishes for a good and quick recovery to our friends!

“A great first day in Israel” ... travel report from Patricia Needle

Here’s me and my sister Clare (she’s seated), with another set of sisters, and Orly Ziv, dietician and force behind ‘cookinIsrael’. Orly (second from left) picked us up in the early am, and brought us to historic Carmel open air market. We were shepherded into unmarked back doors to witness solitary elderly men and women making their pita breads as generations had before them. We tasted, sniffed, and later, cooked with local herbs and spices. Breakfast in another, unmarked alleyway cafe, raw onions to dip in fresh hummus, aromatic Turkish coffee.

In Orly’s comfortable kitchen, we made 7-8 typical Israeli dishes culled from the Middle Eastern palette: tabouli, hummus, baba ghanoosh, chopped telapia kabobs, etc. The day sped past. We were ready to sit for lunch around 2 pm. Joined by one of her sons and a young daughter, the conversation flowed. It was a great first day in Israel.

Many thanks to the residents and staff of Monarch Place for providing the comfortable meeting space, as well as cookies and egg nog. There is street parking near the facility, as well as ample spaces on the other side of Pleasant Valley Avenue. For those who require closer parking, Monarch Place offers valet service in their garage; however, space is limited. Public transportation is also an option, with the #12 AC Transit bus stopping at Gilbert St. and Pleasant Valley Ave.

Reservations are requested to ensure adequate seating and refreshments. RSVP by Tuesday, December 11. email: [email protected]; phone Grant Bennett at (510) 234-5431 or Joyce Sakai at (510) 525-5166.

Last Month’s PD Forum Maybe it was the sudden downpour and scarcity of parking spaces, but many of you missed an excellent program in November. PD Active president Herb Heinz spoke candidly about the organization’s financial and leadership challenges. Chorus Director Lauren Carley led members of The Tremolos and the audience in fun and invigorating vocal and movement exercises and song. The good news is, you can check out The Tremolos schedule in this newsletter’s calendar and join the class! Thanks to members of The Tremolos who helped with this program: Freida Dilloo, Tim Gordon, Paula Spurlock, Frances Tobriner, and Stephen Tobriner.

Looking Ahead to January 2013 Our guest presenter will be Mandy Murphy, registered dietitian, and candidate for a Mas-ters in Public Health degree from UC Berkeley. She will discuss ways to optimize nutrition throughout the aging process with a special focus on those with PD.

Best wishes, Grant Bennett & Joyce Sakai

BBT Dance Class Status ChangeAs of January, 2013, Berkeley Ballet Theater’s (BBT) Dance for PD program will operate independently of PD Active. The decision to make this change was made by BBT. This change does not affect PD Active’s continuing relationship with Dance for PD classes at Danspace in Oakland.

PD Active and BBT are both non-profit organizations. BBT is already actively fundraising and has asked dancers to request funds from family and friends. Please remember that PD Active, run by and for people with PD, depends on your financial generosity to sustain our program offerings.

We encourage you to continue dancing at BBT and Danspace!
