Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

On November 11, 2011, the day the doors opened at the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas, the art world was stunned. Not only was the Museum located in an unexpected place, but it was architecturally elegant and the art contained within was unquestionably of the highest quality. Moshe Safdie, the Israeli/Canadian/American architect, designed the building; Alice Walton, daughter of the founder of Walmart, chose the art. Together, they created a vibrant example of the power of beauty and originality to transform the tried and true into something new. In a similar way, powerful personalities in Kansas City had earlier transformed their city into a renowned destination for art. Please join me to celebrate the arts on a privileged program to these two remarkable cities, with private curatorial tours and visits to collectors’ homes. The state-of-the-art museums we will visit in Missouri and Arkansas provide a compelling argument for the proposition that great American art and architecture are to be found all across the United States, from sea to shining sea.

In Kansas City, accommodations are at The Raphael Hotel, voted one of the best hotels in the world by readers of Travel & Leisure—who also named Kansas City the third-best American city for foodies. In Bentonville, we stay at the 21c Museum Hotel, named one of the best hotels in the country by Condé Nast Traveler readers.

We hope to welcome you on this exceptional program in America’s Heartland. Sincerely,Carrie Rebora BarrattDeputy Director for Collections and AdministrationThe Metropolitan Museum of Art
