1. MISSION STATEMENT & PHILOSOPHY

Columbia Commonwealth University Malawi is an institution of

higher learning striving to provide educational programs designed

for the intellectual, professional and personal developments of its

students. The university’s educational philosophy is based on the

integration of mind, body and spirit and thus encourages students

not only to learn new things but also to become aware of and

respond to the many problems surrounding their physical and

social environments, their community as well as their personal

development physically, intellectually, morally and ethically.

Students are encouraged to take an active part in the learning

process and develop critical thinking skills and problem solving

abilities. Each course is therefore designed to give them

opportunities to relate what is learned from the text to day-to-day

problems they face at work, at home and in their cultural,

political, economic and social environments.

3. PROGRAMS OFFERED

We currently offer:

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business and Administration

(3-4 years program)

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) (1-2 years

program)

Bachelor of Business Administration (3-4 years program)

Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Completion

Program (1-2 years program)

(This Prospectus is devoted to the Undergraduate Degree Programs

leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) that can be

done in either of two ways: a) The full program to be completed in

three-four years and b) The Degree Completion Program to be

completed in 1-2 years designed for those who have already

completed some courses at other institutions and need to take

remaining courses to complete their BBA degree)

4. BBA CIRRICULUM

The Bachelor of Business Administration is designed to enable stu-

dents become familiar with the principles, concepts and applications

of basic courses required at the first degree level. Area of concentra-

tion courses are designed to prepare students for entry level profes-

sions in their specialization. Each course will have specific learning

objectives students are required to complete by the end of the

course work. Students will be required to relate the concepts and

principles learnt to the local (Malawian) situations so that they can

apply them when they join the world of work.

4.2 Specific Objectives

Enable students understand concepts, principles and theories as

well as applications of the principles to Business Administration

and Management

Enable them develop problem solving skills in administration

and management focusing on local situations

Guide, counsel and prepare them to plan for their career,

development

The BBA program will take 3-4 years depending upon how many

courses the student enrolls with transfer credits as well as the num-

ber of courses he/she can take per semester.

The Degree Completion program will take 1-2 years depending up-

on how many courses the student has already completed at other

institutions and how many courses can be accepted as transfer

credits.

4.3 Duration of the Program

There will be at least 25 in-class lecture hours for each course worth 3

credits). (This is in addition to various assignments students are

required to work on.)

4.5 Mode of Delivery

Students will be required to attend in-class lectures, work on group

and individuals written assignments, participate in class discussions,

do field visits (whenever the course work requires such visits) and

complete projects as assigned by the instructor. Instructors will use

various methods of learning such as Power Point Presentation, case

studies, group discussions.

Each student is expected to use a major text book for the course.

4.6 Method of Assessment

Academic performance of students will be done by various

methods including (but not limited to) mid-term and final

examinations, class attendance and participation and group and

individual assignments. While these are general guidelines, the

course instructor can use his/her method of assessment for various

written assignments and projects. (However, Mid-term and Final

examinations are required to be administered by all instructors).

4.7 Coursework Components & Activities

There are five areas of Concentration students can choose from:

Marketing Management

Accounting

Human Resource Management

Strategic Management

Supply Chain & Logistics Management

(Students who plan to work on other areas of concentration can

submit a request and the University will do its best to arrange for

courses needed for the requested area of concentration as long as

the concentration is within Business Administration and

Management)

The Bachelor of Business Administration program has three areas

of activities:

1. Coursework (attending class lectures and working on assign-

ments)

2. Examinations (mid-term and final examinations) and

3. Senior research paper.

Each student is required to submit a research proposal two semes-

ters before the anticipated date of completion of the program. All

parts must be passed for the award of the Bachelor of Business Ad-

ministration. If and when required a limited number of courses can

be given on line.

4.9 Total Credits Needed to Complete the BBA Program

Students are required to take a total of 102 credits according to the following

breakdown:

General Education Courses (required) 6 courses of 3 credits each-------18 credits

Required BBA (core courses): 10 courses of 3 credits each ----------------30 credits

Area of Concentration courses 7 courses of 3 credits each ----------------21 credits

Electives (6 courses of 3 credits each -------------------------------------------18 credits

Final Research Project (paper) –---------(15 credits according to the following

breakdown)

Preparation of project proposal ---------------------------------------------------3 credits

Write-up and Submission of Final paper ---------------------------------------10 credits

Oral Review (presentation) ---------------------------------------------------------2 credits

Total credits for Final (Senior) Project/Research Pap-----------------------15 credits

Total credits required to complete the BBA program -------------------- 102 credits

Examination scores out of possible 100 points will be used with

corresponding letter grades as indicated below:

91% and above --------------------------------------------------------------------- A+

80-89% -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A-

75-79% -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B+

70-74% -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B-

60-69% -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C+

55-60% -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C-

46-54% -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D

44% and below ----------------------------------------------------------------------F

Depending on the class performance instructors can adjust the scores to

reflect fair distribution of grades that reflect a normal distribution curve.

(Instructors will be expected to give different weight for each activity such

as class attendance (e.g. 15%), group project and individual assignments

(10%) in addition to scores for mid-term and final examinations (normally

25% for mid-tem and about 45% for final examination).

courses (Students should take at least 2 courses from each group).

For the Bachelor of Business Administration program, the applicants must

have a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with

passing grades in English and Mathematics and passing average in other sub-

jects.

5.2 Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program (1-2 Yrs. Program)

In order to be admitted to the Degree Completion Program,

students must have completed at least one-third of the courses

(about 35 credit hours) of undergraduate courses with passing

grades at recognized colleges or universities. The completed

courses will be assessed in order to determine those which can be

accepted for transfer to the CCWUM degree completion program.

5.3 Credit Transfer Policy

For the degree completion program, CCWUM awards credits for

courses completed elsewhere according to the policies and

guidelines on transfer credits. (Please refer to the guideline for

details)

Application Procedure:

1. Fill out the CCWUM application form and submit it with an

initial application processing fee of MK10,000.00

2. If the applicant meets the minimum requirement, the student

will be issued a form to be filled out by referees who are

familiar with her/his academic performance, job performance,

character and potential to pursue a degree level academic

program.

6. TUITION & OTHER FEES

For the 2015/2016 academic year the fees are as follows:

Tuition Fee BBA program ------------------------------MK35, 000.00 per course

Tuition Fee BBA degree Completion Program----MK45, 000.00 per course

Graduation Fee -----------------------------------K50, 000 00 (for all programs)

Students should pay at least for 3 courses before starting classes.

Please note that there will not be any examination fees when students

complete courses and take examinations.
