Tweetification of the week

Year 6-7 Pizza Night

Follow US!

- This week’s Oscar was presented to

@principalbsps

This week for something a little different I thought I would share some information that might be not so obvious from a parent viewpoint. So, did you know that:

Every maths teacher in the school has a one hour coaching session each week

Every English teacher in the school has a one hour coaching session each week

The Staff leadership team comprises of the Principal, Assistant Principal, PYP coordinator, Wellbeing leaders – staff and student, Literacy leader and Maths leader

We have 355 enrolments with 54% boys and 46% girls

26% of our students speak another language at home

18% of our students were born in Australia and speak another language at home

Our top 3 other languages spoken at home are Mandarin, Cantonese and German

Our top 4 countries of birth for our parents are Australia, China, Germany and India

Our current prep classes have the lowest percentage of foreign born students

The school opened in 1969, therefore we celebrate 50 years in 2019!

Coordinators’ Day

On Thursday, another important development occurred with the level coordinators meeting for a day of building leadership capacity, discussing whole school structures and processes and suggesting areas for improvement. We are currently working on updating our BSPS organisational flow chart that will clearly show how we encourage staff and student voice. Next term, I will share our work with our community.

Have a great weekend

From the Assistant Principal—Outside the Classroom

On Friday the 15th March, 20 students and two staff from Bayswater South Primary School attended the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time. The aim of the day was to introduce students who had shown a high interest or ability in maths and science, to current innovations in the technology fields. At 8:00am we caught a train from Bayswater station to Southern Cross station whereby we boarded a tram straight to Gate 1 of the Grand Prix. On a beautiful 25 degree day, lots of people had the same idea as us with hundreds of people lined up to get in. Everything went smoothly and after familiarizing ourselves with the Innovation and Technology ‘district’ we were to spend most of the day at, we moved off to find a spot on the edge of the race track to observe the early morning Ferrari race. At 10:30am the Innovation and Technology area opened up and we were able to spend the next few hours exploring all the exciting shows, information sessions and hands on experiences you can see in the pictures.

In these pictures you can see students in a race car simulation getting a feel for what the drivers view and feel of the actual race is like. Also students lined up to have a turn in a Virtual Reality setting whereby they were in a room with a formula 1 car engine and had the ability to reach out and touch the engine, pulling it apart piece by piece and seeing how it went together.

In these pictures we can see students in a virtual reality world as well as learning how 3-D printers work. Students were shown how 3-D printers can be used to produce a wide variety of things such as a three dimensional map of the city of Melbourne as well as the components to make a small scale model of a Ferrari Formula 1 car. Transformer Optimus Prime also dropped in to say hi to all the people visiting on this day. Great time to take a selfie!

In this special cube shaped building, BSPS students were greeted by a talking, seeing and feeling robot. They were split into three groups and participated in different activities. One group learnt more about 3D printing and designed objects on their laptops which could then be sent to the printer in the background and made into solid objects.

Another group seen below learnt about robotics and how they can be pro-grammed to produce human movements and even to dance.

The third group of students was lucky enough to learn about VR – Virtual reality. They each had a headset including earphones and goggles that blocked out their immediate surrounds and took them into a digital world.

During lunchtime we found a

nice vantage point to watch

the formula 1 cars complete

their practice session and

then we headed back for

some more engineering and

technology based activities.

As seen in the pictures above,

our students participated in a

drone challenge whereby they had to pilot a drone through hoops and around a cage in a set time. Some students also programed robots to go around a track. Overall it was a fantastic day for all involved. Our students were an absolute pleasure, always looking out for themselves as well as others around them. I received positive comments from other visitors regarding the good manners and behaviour of our student and I would not hesitate to take another larger group in 2020 given the chance. Everyone was a winner today (not just Mav) and I hope the students have some good memories of the day to share and keep. Bret Mottrom Assistant Principal

Inside the Classroom— Years 1/2

‘See-Think-Wonder’ is a simple and very effective critical-viewing strategy to guide students’ analysis of any visual media.

Prompting students to slow down their thinking and simply observe before drawing conclusions and asking questions, helps

them engage more deeply with, and analyse more thoughtfully, the media they are viewing.

The students are encouraged to make careful observations and thoughtful interpretations. This routine helps stimulate

curiosity and sets the stage for inquiry. We use this routine when we want students to think about why something looks the

way it does, or why it is the way it is. As part of our unit of inquiry into building a classroom community, students in 1/2 were

presented with a photo of this classroom:

Using the Visible Thinking routine, we unpacked our thoughts step by step, about this classroom photo. Students have made

excellent observations and could state clearly that they see a ‘clean classroom’ that has nothing other than chairs and tables,

that the tables are all facing the same way (presumably towards where the teacher would be) and only fit one student.

The students thought that this photo had been taken before or after school as there are no students or teachers in the photo.

They were able to judge by the height of the tables and chairs, that it must be a classroom at a High School. The students at this

school may have sore knees from always sitting on chairs and the light reflecting off the tables may be annoying. Other

thoughts were that the classroom was boring and uncomfortable, was very ordinary and dark and quite frankly, looked like a

prison.

The students wondered: if this classroom had a reading corner that we couldn’t see, who took the picture, why and when, if

everyone has gone home, if the students who went there liked it or not, where in the world it was and why anyone would want

a classroom like that. Did these tables open and have storage underneath and maybe where the students’ belongings were

kept?

The students compared the classroom in the photo with our classrooms and all agreed that our classrooms are much more

inviting and friendly. They all preferred their own classroom and were happy to be here.

A few days later we repeated the See-Think-Wonder routine with a new picture of a classroom similar to ours. Without

prompting, the students started to discuss what they saw, followed by what they thought and what they wondered and would

like to know.

Welcoming new teachers and students

As we reflected on all the things we’ve done, we realised we have achieved a lot in the past

few weeks!

In our recent leadership meeting, we talked about this quote: “A leader does the right

thing even when no one is watching”. We also talked about taking action when we see

something bad happening. For example, if we see some rubbish on the ground, to pick it

up. Something similar to “see something, do something”.

We brainstormed examples of setting a good example. Some examples are:

Picking up rubbish (even if nobody is watching)

Reporting any inappropriate behaviour

Following the seven habits and school values

Being polite

Welcoming new students, staff and visitors

Respecting other people’s feelings and belongings

Everyone drew a star next to one of these actions. They challenged themselves to work on

that specific goal and to improve on it.

Our question is: Are you up for the challenge?

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-

Provide care and be a friend

Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to

Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)

Help a child sort through a problem or an issue

Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)

Connect with parents as the need arises

Refer a child to other professionals

Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. Regards Bronwyn Upton SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Art Room News

Just a friendly reminder, if you haven’t already done so, that your child requires an art smock for all Art classes. The art smock does not need to be a specific shop bought art smock, it can be an old shirt or t-shirt that is big enough to cover and protect your child’s school uniform. There are a small assortment of smocks for sale in the 2nd uniform shop.

Thank you very much for the wonderful donations we receive from the school community, but unfortunately storage is always a problem.

The only items we are presently collecting are:

SMALL POLYSTYRENE FOAM TRAYS

SMALL SQUEEZE BOTTLES FROM HOME HAIR COLOUR KITS

CLAY POTS FROM CHRIS’ HERITAGE DIPS

TERRACOTTA GARDEN POTS (no larger than 15 cm in diameter and 9 cm high)

If other items are required, for example cardboard boxes, a note will be sent home to relevant grades or an announcement made in the school newsletter. Also, if you think that you have access to larger quantities of art/craft materials that may be beneficial to the curriculum, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you to Dean Newitt form FRAMES NOW Bayswater North, for the generous donation of mat board frames for us to use in the art room.

Kind regards,

Petra Murrihy

Student Well Being

Last Friday, it was National Day of Action against Bullying.

The Year 6 leadership team did a fantastic job of preparing a presentation to raise awareness at Assembly. They defined what

bullying is, highlighted what to do when you see someone/if you are someone who is being bullied and making connections to

our Learner Profile: Caring.

mage: IB Learner Profile (10 in total) Image: Display at Assembly last Friday

As IB Learners, we strive to be caring by showing empathy [BSPS school value], compassion and respect [BSPS school value].

We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the world around us [link

to the 7 Habits].

We invite the whole school community to take part in developing the Learner Profile of caring within and outside of the school

community.

Students taking action:

Lucas W (Year 1) shared with his class that he would like to care for families affected by the bush fires by donating toys and

other necessities.

_________ (Year 3) wrote a letter that he would like to take action to care for our environment by reducing the amount of

rubbish and plastic we use at school.

Year 6 student leadership team set goals that they will greet people as they walk past, pick up rubbish even when nobody is

looking and treat others (even if they are not their friends) with respect.

We can all make a difference. What is something that you can do this week?
