Dear Bayside Families, As we head into the end of the year, now is a good time to reflect back on some of the things we’ve accomplished this year, as well as what we have to look forward to as we head into the summer. To improve on our communication with our families, we’ve enhanced two of our communication tools – our in-school televised announcements which are now posted on Edline for everyone to watch, and our newsletter which is now mailed to every household. We are always balancing how much and in what format our families need Bayside information. We will, also continue to read your feedback in an attempt to strengthen our ability to meet our communication needs. We added two additional Advanced Placement class this year (AP World History & AP Capstone Seminar), and will add another next year with AP Environmental. More significantly, we have been working together as a faculty to develop a support system for students who may not have considered themselves candidates for Advanced Placement. This AP Promise program will give students the opportunity to prepare for the rigor of Advanced Placement the year prior to taking on the challenge of that curriculum. It is our hope that we will be able to better encourage our students performing in the middle to stretch themselves and be better prepared for college. We also added our BLAST program this year for students from all three of our south area high schools who continue to work on basic living and work skills past the four years of traditional high school. This program brought three new outstanding teachers and 25 amazing students to Bayside. We have had tremendous participation in our extracurricular activities, and have represented Bayside well in all areas from science research, TSA and Future Educators of America to NJROTC, High School High Tech and culinary. This is just to name a few and doesn’t even begin to address the countless hours of practice, performance, and community service opportunities our performing arts and sport teams put in on our behalf. We are truly grateful to be represented by such outstanding students and appreciate all the support their families provide. We continue to focus on teaching the standards and are continuously improving our ability to use the appropriate interventions and strategies to help our students master those standards. We have a mentor program in place for students who are struggling academically and serve over 150 students. This year we added a school social worker to our student services department and designated one of our counselors as an intervention specialist – both of these positions were added to better meet all the needs of our students as they work through their sometimes turbulent lives on the way to their high school diplomas. As you know, Bayside High School is an ‘A’ School, and we hope to continue this tradition of academic excellence as we serve your students. Next year, we will be adding a new program to Bayside’s Career and Technical Education Department – Machining. Brevard has one of the largest machining industries in the country and we want to be able to provide our students with an introduction to a great career opportunity. You will definitely be hearing more about this in the future. Please do not hesitate to let us know either in our surveys, an e-mail or by swinging by the school if there is anything that you believe we can be doing better. We take our mission and role as public servants very seriously and hope to bring the best possible service to the students and families of Bayside. Dear Bayside Families,

As we head into the end of the year, now is a good time to reflect back on some of the things we’ve accomplished this year, as well as what we have to look forward to as we head

into the summer.

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The information gathered on the FAFSA provides the federal and state government, as well as most postsecondary institutions, with the financial information needed to determine the amount of financial aid that a student is eligible to receive. Since this aid is based on need, it is very important to gather financial information from the family to make proper determinations. Therefore, the FAFSA should be filed as soon after January 1 as possible.

The easiest and quickest way to file the FAFSA is online… www.FAFSA.gov

**BEWARE OF SCAM WEBSITES! Always use the website that ends in .GOV (dot GOV)!

** Must I Include My Parent’s Financial Information When I Apply for Federal Student Aid?

The federal student aid programs are based on the concept that it is primarily your and your family’s responsibility to pay for your education. And because a dependent student is assumed to have the support of parents, the parents’ information has to be assessed along with the student’s, in order to get a full picture of the family’s financial strength. If you’re a dependent student, it doesn’t mean your parents are required to pay anything toward your education; this is just a way of looking at everyone in a consistent manner. A person is NOT eligible to receive need based aid WITHOUT parental financial information UNLESS:

• You will be 24 or older by Dec. 31 of the school year for which you are applying for financial aid; OR

• Will you be working toward a master’s or doctorate degree (beyond bachelor’s degree); OR

• You are married or separated but not divorced; OR • You have children who receive more than half of their support from you; OR

• You have dependents (other than children or a spouse) who live with you and receive more than half of their support from you; OR

• At any time since you turned age 13, both of your parents deceased, you were in foster care, OR you were a ward or dependent of the court; OR

• You are an emancipated minor or are you in a legal guardianship as determined by a court; OR

• Are you an unaccompanied youth who is homeless or self-supporting and at risk of being homeless; OR

• Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training; OR • You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. If a person can meet one or more of the criteria listed above, then they will be considered an “independent student” for eligibility purposes for financial aid.

If a person does NOT qualify as an independent student, their financial eligibility will be based on the person’s and their parents’ income and assets, and they will be required to report their financial information on all financial forms they complete. If a person feels that they have a special circumstance that will qualify them as an independent student to receive federal funds, he/she should talk to the Financial Aid Officer at the school he/she plan, to attend.

Leave all personal items in your car and arrange to meet your family outside of the gym directly after graduation. Please change into your cap and gown at home or in the parking lot prior to coming into the campus. Once you have been checked in, you will proceed to the gymnasium. Once you arrive in the gym, you will check in with the counselor who will be leading your line. All teal/silver honor cords, CTE honor cords, and collegiate stoles will be distributed to students upon check in, for those earning these honors. Any student who has received an honor cord/stole from a Bayside student organization, prior to graduation night, should wear them. No extra cords/stoles will be available.

Graduation is a dignified ceremony, meaning each graduate has the right to be valued and receive the attention they deserve. Therefore, inappropriate behavior from graduates is not acceptable. You deserve your moment to shine, but so do the students who come before and after you on the stage.

Dress Code for graduation is as follows:

Gentlemen

• Slacks, dress shirts & ties

• Dress shoes (athletic footwear is not permitted)

• NO FACIAL PIERCINGS, earrings are acceptable

Ladies

• Dresses or Dress Pants and a Blouse

• Flat Shoes are recommended, however heels are acceptable. Sandals with a back strap are also recommended

Students and family members are encouraged to wear bug spray. Parents and family members should be prepared for weather. Depending on the weather parents and family members may need to bring an umbrella or even a towel to wipe down their seat. You and your parents will need to stay informed of the weather conditions. Early arrival is also recommended, parking can be challenging. The gates will open at 6:00 p.m.

Students MUST return back to the gym at the end of the commencement ceremony to collect their diploma.

Alternate Rain Plan

In the event we experience rain, we will do our best to hold the ceremony start time until the rain subsides. If the rain does not stop, we will move the ceremony to 9:00 a.m. the following day. If we are still experiencing heavy rain on Saturday morning, we will need to implement our final rain plan which will require us to move the graduation ceremony to the gym. If that happens, ONLY THOSE HOLDING TRACK TICKETS WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE CEREMONY. Please note, we will only follow this rain plan in the case of extreme weather conditions. We will do everything possible to have the ceremony in the stadium.

Grad Images will be here to take photographs of the graduates as they cross the stage and exit the stage. Your information is provided to Grad Images and you will be contacted through their company to purchase photos. This is strictly voluntary; no student is required to purchase graduation day photos.

6If you’re heading to college, what you post on social media matters. Forty percent of college admissions officers (CAOs) visited an applicant’s social media pages in 2015, according to Kaplan Test Prep’s survey of nearly 400 CAOs at top colleges and universities in the United States. This is the highest percentage reported since Kaplan began surveying college admissions officers in 2008, when just under 10 percent reported viewing applicants’ social media sites. Thirty-seven percent of admissions officers who visited applicants’ sites said that what they found positively or negatively impacted applicants’ chances of being accepted to college.

Admissions officers identified the following “trigger points”—events, information, or activities—that would prompt them to view an applicant’s social media sites:

ASpecificTalent:If an applicant mentions a special talent—such as being an artist, musician, writer, or poet—the CAO will visit his or her social media pages to view their work. Forty-two percent of admissions officers surveyed by Kaplan Test Prep reported an increase in the number of students who made such requests from two years ago.

Verification of Awards. If an applicant mentions that he or she received a very prestigious award, the CAO will visit their websites, or independent sites, to verify this claim.

Scholarships. If an applicant is applying for scholarships— especially large ones—the CAO will visit his or her websites, or contact their school or check with other sources, to perform extra due diligence. Admissions Sabotage. Surprisingly, some admissions officers receive anonymous tips about bad behavior or inappropriate posts of applicants.

Criminal Records/Disciplinary Action. Some CAOs say that if the applicant mentions either of these issues, he or she will dig further on the applicant’s social media pages, through independent media sources, and police and school district reports to get the full story. In a separate survey, 35 percent of students believe that positive information on their social media pages will increase their chances of getting into

college. While most students are indifferent to the role of social media in the admissions process, approximately 18 percent plan to use social media to increase their chances of admission. Overall, 58 percent of students surveyed by Kaplan Test Prep believe that social networking pages are “fair game” for college admissions officers.
