David and Beverly Bayless Missionaries

Church growth and leadership development are the two

main areas of the work of David and Beverly

Bayless

in Bel^m

the main city of the Amazon Valley in Brazil. Eleven churches

and four in

^e initial stages are growing ata

rate

of S to

20

per

cent per year. David prepares teachingmaterial for men who lead

churches and evangelize as well as givingweekly orientation to

leaders

The churches are led by men raised up from the congrega

tions. Growth is faster this way than if a missionary were the

leader of a congregation. Local leadership is encouraged and

developed.

Men are eager to take the

gospel

to others and lead

their own churches. They need to be shown how and given

the necessary preparation.

Beverly teaches ladies

to

teach classes

inthe

church

so they

will

not be

dependent

on

her.

She

has

been

spending

considerable

time

recuperating

from major

surgery

and

is

making

fast

progress.

Joanne a senior in the Amazon Valley

Academy

is active

in the youth group in a new church. John in the 7th grade likes

sports and

is

raising

vegetables. David

continues to direct the

school band in his spare time.

The church in a huge new

housing

area of 50 000

residents

is growing well. Two

men

converted

there

two years ago lead

evangelize

preach teach

and

take

care

of

the

church.

A

lot

donated

by the

housing

authority

is

being prepared for building.

Several churches

in the

area are

ahead of

their goals

for

growth The leaders

are conscious

of the

need

for

growth

and

ways to accomplish it.

The

Bayless

family is thankful daily for support

from

the

churches and friends who have made it possible to work here

since

1959.
