• Stalingrad is a major industrial city on the banks of the Volga River, and to take over this area would allow Germany to cut off the Russian army’s major supply lines.
• Stalingrad was a vital trade route between the Caspian sea and the northern part of Russia.

•The battle was caused by the Germans not being able to capture Moscow.
•Hitler wanted to expand so they went after Stalingrad.
•The battle began on September 2,1942
