INT. ABANDONED OFFICE - GOTHAM - DUSK

A small office. Maybe a law firm, or even a bank. There’s anAmerican flag hanging proudly on the wall.

A flaming bottle is thrown through the window. We see itpass through the air and crash to the ground.

The fire spreads and lights up the small space in moments.

    The flag begins to burn.

EXT. STREET - GOTHAM - DUSK

The YOUNG THUG who threw the bottle stands outside the nowburning office. Proud of what’s he just done. He’s anuneducated fool.

The junk yard. It’s like a gladiator’s arena. The goons arethe crowd. The leader is THE JOKER - bleached white skin, manic wildness to him. And in the middle, tied to a chair,is ROBIN - this is the ROBIN from The Dark Knight Returns;young, red-haired, spunky and acrobatic.

The sharp end of a crowbar touches her cheek. She’s bloodiedbut not badly hurt.

    The Joker leans in.

    JOKERAny last words, Robin?

    JOKER(cont’d)

And I’m done waiting for Bats tocome to your rescue.

    Robin laughs. The Joker hesitates.

JOKERDid I say something... amusing? Orare you coming round to my way ofthinking?

    Robin looks up, through bloodied teeth and a black eye, shesmiles;

    ROBINI don’t need rescuing.

CLOSE ON Robin’s tied up wrists. A short laser in her glovesmakes quick work of her bonds. She upper cuts the Joker, giving her time to blast her ankle bonds, and then she leapsin the air, kicking the Joker hard and sending him flyingbackwards.

She spins in the air. Lands in a crouched, ready to strike, position, and the batmobile roars into play!

For a split second, we get Robin ready to pounce in theFOREGROUND, and in the BACKGROUND we get the batmobile, leaping through the air into battle.

The batmobile lands. Sends flares at most of the goons toknock them out quick.

Robin leaps and bounds between oncoming goons. Dodging everyclumsy swing and delivering her own counters to put down thethugs.

The Joker is awestruck for a brief moment before -- Batmanheadbutts him hard, knocking him clean out.

More thugs race onto the scene.

The batmobile is too far away - dealing with other thugs -so Batman, and Robin, are alone, back to back.

BATMANYou shouldn’t be out here alone.

The thugs - whipped into a frenzy - surround them.

    ROBINNeither should you.

    A moment. Solidarity. Then;

    The thugs converge.

Batman is ruthless and efficient. Robin is quick andpin-point accurate.

Barely a scratch on either of them as thugs - some of themtwice their size - fall like dominoes.

Finally, Batman about to deliver the final punch but...there’s no point. The guy is bloodied and out of it. Batmandrops him.

    Battle won.

    BATMANYou should go home, Carrie.

ROBINMy place is here. By your side.

    BRUCE(cont’d)

My son’s body is buried under aWayne Industries Tower, in a citythat’s been evacuated, becausealiens invaded. Here’s thepunchline; the only alien tosurvive that day is now asuperhero, saving people.

ALFREDYou can’t blame Superman for whathappened.

BRUCENo. I know it wasn’t his fault. Buthe should have done more. He couldhave done more.

ALFREDAnd what the Batman have done - inplace of Superman?

BRUCEI would have done what I had to...to stop it from ever happening inthe first place.

ALFREDYou would be the one to start thewar then?

BRUCEI would finish it. Before it evercame to war.

    INT. BATCAVE - DAY

Bruce sits at the array of computer screens and consoles -the bat computer.

He’s looking over satellite images of Metropolis.

    ALFRED(looking over his shoulder)

    Metropolis?

    BRUCEThe crash site.

    ALFREDOf the alien ship.

BRUCESpecials Ops teams have secured theimmediate area and are keeping itunder close guard.

    ALFREDNo one gets in.

    BRUCENot yet anyway.

ALFREDAnd what do you hope to find?

BRUCESomething. Anything. Anything thatcan give me more on Superman.

    ALFRED

Give you an advantage, you mean.BRUCE

(points to the screen of thealien ship image)

This has an inside. It was manned.Which means there’ll be computers,

consoles, you know, that kind ofthing.

ALFREDAh, yes... that kind of thing . Veryastute.

    BRUCELook at this.

Bruce points to a bright dot on the thermal-type satelliteimage of the alien ship.

    ALFREDWhat is it?

BRUCECan’t say for sure, but itresembles a core of electricalsignals gathered together. In otherwords --

    ALFRED-- a data core?

BRUCEExactly. Whatever the language, information is just ones andzeroes. And I need information.

ALFREDBut there’s a small army of SpecialOps units between you and that datacore.

    BRUCEI know. But don’t worry.

(walks off to get ready)I’ll go easy on them.

    Alfred rolls his eyes.

BRUCEI have to patrol Gotham at night,Alfred. I have no choice but to gonow.

    ALFREDThey’ll see you coming.

BRUCENo. They won’t see this coming.

Bruce pulls the cowl on. He is Batman.

    INT. BATCAVE - DAY

    Alfred sighs.

ALFREDJust once I’d like to makesomething that doesn’t have theword Bat in it’s name.

    EXT. ABOVE METROPOLIS - DAY

The colour of the bat plane changes! It’s colour morphs sothat it roughly projects what is on the other side. Arougher version of the James Bond car from Die Another Day.

But with the cloaking device enabled, the engines runningsilently and the speed quick enough to avoid a secondglance, the bat plane is able to move above the city unheardand unseen.

INT. BAT PLANE - ABOVE METROPOLIS - DAY

    ALFRED(over the comms.)

You’re approaching the crash siteand the Special Ops units are nonethe wiser. Very clever, MasterWayne.

The Special Ops units are all on guard. The alien ship hasbeen covered in a tent. Scientists go in and out throughlong tent corridors.

    All is peaceful... until...

The bat plane de-cloaks. Right above the site!

It fires missiles. One, two, three! Big explosions. No onehurt.

The soldiers jump into action. Firing back. Taking updefensive positions.

The bat plane fires a few more missiles.

SERGEANTYou stay here! Everyone else with

    me!

The soldier stays behind as the others leave.

He’s on his own. Then... a clink... what was that?

He looks around. Nothing. Then he looks up.

He’s standing underneath a lampost. There’s the lampost andabove the bright blue sky. Not a cloud to be seen.

    Then;

The sky falls on him! SLAM. The soldier out cold.

No. Not the sky. Batman! His cloak and cowl are made withthe same cloaking tech as the bat plane. He had been sittingatop the lampost, covered in his cape and cowl, camouflagedagainst the bright blue sky.

Which means we now have Batman running towards the entranceto the alien ship. And he has a bright blue cape and cowl.

He quickly takes out two soldiers who are looking the wrongway before diving into one of the tent corridors.

INT. TENT CORRIDOR - CRASH SITE - DAY

Batman races down the long, winding corridor. Severalscientists and a few soldiers are coming the other way andBatman has to take them all out.

He moves from one to the other. Taking them out withapparent ease.

The last one - a soldier - puts up more of a fight, but in afew moves Batman takes her out too.

INT. ALIEN SHIP - CRASH SITE - DAY

Batman enters the ship. No one here. The action is happeningoutside.

He takes a moment to breathe. Flips a button on his belt andhis cape and cowl revert back to their black colour.
