Innovating to capture the future

The first six months of the year have been a test of our resilience, and we are happy to say that BASS has weathered the storm well.

Despite the recent challenges related to world GDP growth, high government debts and weak USD, BASS continues its investment in prod-uct innovation. Rest assured that our long term strategy of creating customer value by improv-ing and building new applications which assist customers to safely and efficiently operate their vessels remains intact. As a global leader in the industry, we are pleased to have retained our market position and signed extended contracts with several major customers, with over 1,200 installations for close to 100 customers.

Our latest fleet management software has also been a hit. We achieved a major milestone with the release of BASSnet™ 2.7, a software suite providing integrated management of a ship’s planned maintenance, purchasing, account-ing, payroll, human resource management, document control, vetting, projects and safety, among others. We have a track record in devel-oping ready-made modules on .NET technol-ogy for ship owners and managers to enhance fleet safety, and automate manual processes. This will enable office users to undertake better analysis and improve the work quality - meas-uring performance through KPIs - while at the same time, allowing them to view all their ships in a single dashboard.

In BASS, we believe that the best fleet management software must be able to lower operational cost and increase efficiency. To this end, we continue to improve the BASSnet suite and ensure that our customers gain maximum value from BASSnet products. These efforts have paid off with the successful implementa-tion of our software for our major customers, including Stolt Tankers, CMA-CGM and Pacif-ic International Lines. We are happy to say that ABC Maritime is in the midst of implementing our solutions.

I am also proud to announce that we celebrated the launch of our new dry dock module - BASSnet™ Projects, at Nor-Shipping 2011, and hosted the BASS Europe Customer Forum held in Hamburg, Germany. Our next Asia customer forum will be held in Kuala Lumpur on 29th and 30th November 2011.

The two-day annual BASS European Customer Forum, held on the museum ship Rickmer Rickmers, which is docked at Hamburg, Germany, got the thumbs up from the lively gathering. Customers, partners and BASS officials exchanged ideas, networked and took the oppor-tunity to enjoy the occasion while they were at it.

In his candid address, BASS Managing Di-rector and CEO Per Steinar Upsaker spoke about emerging trends in the maritime trade, and the company’s continued growth and strategies for the future. Rajesh Purkar, who helms BASS’ product management and marketing, gave the audience a glimpse of the latest BASSnet Fleet Management Systems, and took them through the out-look for the next release and future plans.

Day One featured workshops that were abuzz with interactive discussions focus-ing on new features, change requests and roundtable discussions. BASS managers

demonstrated various BASSnet product modules to the enthusiastic participants, who provided feedback that will contribute to future BASSnet developments.

An indication of the event’s success was that discussions continued during refresh-ment breaks on board the museum ship, and then over dinner at the Herzblut St. Pauli restaurant on Reeperbahn Street.

Day Two commenced with an interesting look at technology updates for Windows Azure by Martin Bjoernebye, BASS Gen-eral Manager, R&D, which was followed by a customer case presentation from Stolt Tankers Business Process Manager Jose Milhazes (see Stolt Tankers story).

After Per Steinar wrapped up the forum on the deck of the Rickmer Rickmers, renowned jazz saxophonist Anselm Simon took centre stage to entertain the audience.

All present expressed interest in partici-pating in the next customer forum.

In a major systems makeover, shipping stalwart Stolt Tankers has installed the BASSnet 2.7 Fleet Management Systems for its large fleet of ocean-going ships.

The installation of the new BASSnet 2.7 in-volved the conversion of 76 vessel databases from both in-house and competing systems to a comprehensive and integrated suite of applications. The systems provide integrated management of a ship’s planned mainte-nance, purchasing, accounting (via integra-tion to Oracle), payroll, crew information and document control and safety, among other functions. Key products include the vetting and dry docking modules.

For BASS, the selection of BASSnet 2.7 by the shipping giant is an endorsement par excellence. The selection was extremely rigorous, coming on the back of an extensive, global tender process that took six months and involved the world’s leading fleet man-agement software companies.

The project began in 2008 with Stolt Tankers reviewing information from 12 soft-ware vendors for a market overview, before inviting six companies to submit tenders. About 800 explicit requirements had to be met, and three companies were shortlisted to demonstrate their entire software solutions. BASSnet outshone the competition with its comprehensive database, complete func-

tionality, superior technological platform, intuitive user interface and overall quality assurance.

The implementation of BASSnet 2.7 in the Stolt Tankers’ fleet was concluded in June this year, and the shipping line aims to use the systems as a master database. In BASS, we are proud of the speed at which the man-agement systems were installed.

Stolt Tankers commenced going live with BASSnet in October 2010, and this included all BASSnet modules inclusive of Mainte-nance Database population. BASSnet HR Manager went live in June 2011.

Apart from the size of the contract, it is also significant because BASSnet has re-placed major competitor SpecTec’s software at Stolt Tankers.

Since then, Stolt Tankers have increased its fleet to 81 ships, exhibiting fast implemen-tation without jeopardizing quality.

“This initiative has allowed us to share some best practices using BASSnet with other customers,” says Jose Milhazes, Business Process Manager at Stolt Tankers. BASSnet’s strengths included its fully inte-grated software suite, and usage of up-to-date technology on the Microsoft.NET platform, which nudged Stolt Tankers towards award-ing BASS the coveted job.

Stolt Tankers can now enjoy the immedi-ate benefits of a standard-base server network

and application consolidation, allowing the phasing out of stand-alone and incompatible technologies.

“BASSnet will allow ship managers like us to enhance data and system reliability in the short-term with low hardware and software costs in running multi systems,” Milhazes affirms. “Businesses can therefore concentrate on the ship management process, instead of developing and maintaining un-controlled, unsecured and redundant in-house systems.”

“In the long term, BASSnet will reduce management costs by creating a self-sup-porting infrastructure that can provide truly real-time decision-making support for busi-ness management, giving us the ability to act more quickly to meet customer demand. This is clearly important in the shipping business,” says Milhazes.

Besides improving the day-to-day opera-tions of ship owners, the BASSnet system translates into a better return on investment.

A unit of the Stolt-Nielsen Group, Stolt Tankers, which has some 140 ships, oper-ates one of the largest and most sophisticated global fleet of tankers, providing reliable and high-quality transportation services to the world’s leading manufacturers of chemicals and other bulk liquids.

BASSnet™ HR Manager

BASSnet™ HR Manager covers all the planning and management needs of a shipping company’s Human Resources department.

Key features of the HRM module include being fully web-based, which means a company’s of-fices globally can access the system, as opposed to different offices using different systems.

It also allows for the monitoring of training requirements and knowledge development so that the crew have adequate skills to maintain safety on board.

The software also tracks payroll related informa-tion, including earnings, deductions and allot-ments, and exports this information to BASSnet Financials, to ensure a tight grip on the organiza-tion is maintained.

With BASSnet HR Manager as well, seafarers are able to upload their resume, keep track of career progress, and training information.

This software opens up product access signifi-cantly, helping ship owners and operators build a skilled pool of seafarers. It also enables manning agents, training centres and medical centres to be active participants in the system.

The software consists of several sub-modules:• Fleet• Recruitment• Personnel• CompetenceandTraining• Payroll• ProvisionsandBondedStores• Travel• Budget• LeaveManagement• Reports• Administration

To be the No. 1 maritime management software in the market, you must be versatile – this idea drives BASS. Take our integrated HR and payroll system, which gives you not just a fast and cost-effective solution, but seamless integration with third-party applications as well. What we have is a true blue web-based solution, as all our applications share the same database.

BASS has also chosen to collaborate with Seagull, a specialist in onboard training services for seafarers which simplifies both HR and training management. Now, crew information in the BASSnet™ HR Manager software is updated simultaneously on both databases.

BASSnet™ HR Manager gives full control of both systems without having to manually enter the crew data twice. “When a crew member’s personal details are updated in BASSnet™ HR Manager, the informa-tion will be synchronized and updated in the Seagull Training Administration database with minimal manual intervention.

“The Seagull database will automatically update the crew member as a registered user in its system. As the information is available in both systems, the user can view and select courses in the Seagull Training Administra-tor as well,” Rajesh Purkar, BASS Product Management General Manager explains.

Likewise, when a course is selected in Seagull, the BASSnet™ HR Manager auto-matically updates a crew member’s training information, including course completions. The result: savings in time and resources, and better efficiency.

Renowned shipping company Stolt Tankers is expected to commence using this feature this year. The interest shown by ship owners and managers in signing up for BASSnet™ HR Manager and the benefits reaped from its usage are very encouraging.

Features of BASSnet™ HR Manager and Seagull integration:

• Makes crew information available on the Seagull Training Administration website when the crew’s training status is being evaluated and assessed.

• Web-based feature provides convenience and cuts manpower needs.

• Eliminates manual data entry errors.• Saves time in entering crew data /

records.

The only constant in life, as the saying goes, is change. In BASS, we believe in always listening to customers’ needs to upgrade our systems for better function-alities, features, usability and perfor-mance.

The latest version of the BASSnet™ Main-tenance system – a core module in integrat-ed fleet management systems – is a good example of this commitment. It contains up-to-date features and functions based on feedback and comments from customers.

The upgraded maintenance software results in extensive operational efficiencies and cost savings, and is an important mod-ule – to keep machinery and equipment on board ships in tip-top condition. It is a boon for the engineer on board the ship, helping to implement an effective planned mainte-nance system.

The latest BASSnet™ Maintenance version 2.7 features much more than just maintenance scheduling. BASSnet™ Main-tenance facilitates the monitoring of equip-ment condition, which means those parts of the equipment are replaced as needed, rather than replacing entire components on a routine basis. The positive impact on the company’s bottom line is obvious.

In a nutshell, the new modules and sub modules integrate BASSnet Maintenance on a common database and result in lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for custom-ers. Among others, the system helps users plan and carry out vetting inspections for tankers. It monitors and assists them in planning the availability of adequate crew to carry out job orders based on the due dates. A simple right click on a record enables a display of either a summary or detailed calendar based chart.

The Guarantee claims feature tracks all components and parts under warranty, and monitor the progress of claims. Towards this end, our systems also monitor and man-age the costs of dry docking projects and hull inspections carried out.

Other strengths include a location mana- ger feature, which tracks the storage location of all materials, components and documents.

It is also possible to create schedules for minor jobs such as Megger Test, EO and safety tasks and set these to recur on an appropriate schedule, with the selected resource or crew to carry out the tasks.

BASSnet™ Maintenance also enables the creation of reports for conditions of class as required and the monitoring of defects logged for materials or components

across a fleet of ships. Other interesting features include an overview of the compo-nents on each vessel in the fleet.

There is also a category of new logs, which monitor ballasts, solid residues and oil records, among others. The benefits of having the above integrated sub modules on a common database results in lower TOC for BASSnet customers.

An obvious reduction is in administrative and time costs. The Routine Task feature, for instance, allows users to create schedules for minor jobs, the Defects module enables users to manage and view defects for all the vessels’ components and the Guarantee Claims tracks all components and parts under warranty. This greatly improves deci-sion-making and operational performance.

“Users can manage materials by per-forming automatic stock updates – connect-ing materials to jobs and reporting materials consumption during the job reporting. In ad-dition, a location management sub-module enables users to manage storage locations of the ship’s materials, components and docu-ments,” says Rajesh Purkar, BASS General Manager, Product Management & Market-ing. “This not only cuts down on time, but also helps fleet organizations save tremen-dous costs,” he asserts.

The year started off on a promising note, with BASS participating in the Digital Ship Bergen and Hamburg conferences, where professionals gather to deliberate on the latest industry updates and issues relating to maritime technology, such as fleet broad-band, solutions for crewing challenges and IT management.

BASS made good use of the occasion at the Digital Ship Bergen, and the months after that were extremely busy, with a slew of customer visits, product development activities, exhibitions and a host of confer-ences attended by BASS personnel.

Derrick Lee, BASS Regional Manager, says that a large number of prospective customers visited our stand at Sea Asia at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Conven-tion Centre in Singapore, indicating the bright prospects for BASS and the maritime software solutions sector in general. A large number of prospective users, notably from Singapore, the transportation hub of the region, signals many opportunities for BASS in the Asian shipping arena.

This also prevailed at Nor-Shipping and Donso Tanker in Europe. The high level of interest at BASS’ stands is a testament to the significant role of technology in streamlining maritime operations. Systems

such as crew management drew consider-able attention from European Ship owners and managers.

Mark Ravi, BASS Head of Sales –Asia, who was a speaker at the Dubai Crew Man-ning conference in April, gave a talk enti-tled “Web Applications Re-engineer Crew Management” to a receptive audience made up of fleet and crew managers. He asserted that a good crew management system is a key element in providing operational ef-ficiency and results in sizeable cost savings.

Fruitful evening in SingaporeBusiness blended with pleasure on the evening of July 21, in Singapore, the Lion city, when BASS played host to a gathering of prominent shipping outfits at the Amara Hotel, in the central business district.

Some 30 industry representatives social-ised at the poolside reception over drinks and snacks, and took in a slide presentation on the latest features of the BASSnet Fleet Management Systems 2.7.

Afterwards, seniors from IMC, Anglo Eastern, Titan and MSI, among others, sought out Mark Ravi and Derrick Lee for quotations and demos on BASS’ solutions, including for human resource management, risk management and vetting systems.
