Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are woven wire mesh containers manufactured from zinc coated steel wire, with or without an additional PVC coating. Supplied in bundles, Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are assembled and filled with rock on-site as modular units

that are laced together to form permeable, flexible structures. Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are used in many, varied applications and are widely considered as an environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing solution.

MASS GRAVITY RETAINING WALLS Kaybion® baskets are used to construct flexible mass gravity retaining wall structures which rely on the modular units and mass of rock fill to effectively stabilize unstable slopes.

REINFORCED SOIL STRUCTURES Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are used in combination with geosynthetics to construct flexible reinforced soil structures. Typically open geogrids like RockGrid® KX or composite geogrids like RockGrid® PC are used to reinforce the soil behind a Kaybion® basket face.

EROSION CONTROL Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are used to prevent or limit soil erosion. The permeability of a Kaybion® structure with the added benefit of a geotextile filter separator backing, such as bidim® A4, prevents soil from eroding while permitting the passage of seepage water.

• Highly permeable – Voids in the packed rock fill allow water to easily pass through the Kaybion® structure while the backfill material is retained by a suitable geotextile filter separator, such as bidim® A4.

• Environmentally friendly – A reduced carbon footprint as opposed to traditional solutions like reinforced concrete walls, canals and spillways. Blend into the environment by promoting growth of natural vegetation.

• Flexible – Correctly designed and installed Kaybion® structures are able to withstand and absorb large internal and external loads without affecting the integrity of the structure.

• Cost effective – Overall costs are reduced by using Kaybion® baskets and mattresses as opposed to traditional solutions.

• Durable – The resistant wire coating and the integrity of the fabrication of Kaybion® baskets and mattresses provides proven extended lifetime of the structure.

• Local content – Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are manufactured in South Africa with 100% local content as stipulated in National Treasury Designated Sector’s Instruction.

Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are manufactured from woven steel wire mesh in accordance with SANS 1580 – “Hexagonal steel wire mesh gabions and revet mattresses”.

The steel wire used to manufacture the woven mesh is zinc coated in compliance with SANS 675 – “Zinc-coated fencing wire” or Galfan coated (Zn – Al 5% alloy). The galvanised or Galfan wire is also available with an additional polymer coating of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The PVC coating is a thickness of ≥0.48mm as required by SANS 1580).

HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES Kaybion® baskets and mattresses are used in a variety of hydraulic applications which include:• Channel Linings – municipal, mining, agriculture• Culverts – storm water conduits and underpasses• Weirs – silt traps, flow attenuation, flow measurement• Dams – spillways, outlet portals, erosion control,

articulated rip-rap• Dykes – water impoundments and retention barriers• Storm water control - flow dissipation, attenuation and

retention ponds,• Groynes and piers - river diversion, bank/shore erosion

protection, flow attenuation, tidal and storm surge control• Marinas – Embankments, tidal protection, jetties.

GABSABAG®

Gabsabag® geobags are made from a suitable geotextile such as bidim®, Envirotex® or GeoRevet®. When filled with soil a Gabsabag® can be used as a cost effective alternative to the rock usually used to pack a Kaybion® basket. Sealed Gabsabag® geobags filled with insitu soil are placed and tamped into position at the back of the Kaybion® basket. A thin layer of hand-packed rock is placed in front and on top of the Gabsabag® geobags. The layer of rock protects the Gabsabag® geobags from UV degradation due to exposure to sunlight whilst retaining the appearance of a rock filled Kaybion® basket.
