Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

The big theme for his day is that as followers of Jesus, we should be humble. Humility, as it is often defined, is the virtue by which we know our place and take it. Beginning this coming Friday, September 2nd, our Friday morning Masses will be at 8:30 a.m. instead of 7:30 a.m. We will have this schedule until the academic year, when we’ll go back to 7:30 a.m. Mass for the summer. This weekend, I hope you get to say hello to Fr. Gustavo, pastor of San Francisco de Asís parish in Reitoca, F.M., Honduras – our sister parish. He will be around until September 9th. While he is in the United States, he will also be visiting his two brothers in Charlotte and Savannah. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

COME HOME SO YOU DON'T THINK THIS IS A GOOD TIME to be inviting a Catholic who has left the Church to return Home. Hmm....When is the best time then? It's actually right now. If you have questions. or would like to help with COME HOME, please call 762-5491, ext. 111.

At the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, we are reigniting our effort to reach out to Catholics who have left the Church...no matter the reason, no matter for how long. We want to invite them to take another look at the Church of today, to begin a return to full participation in the Sacraments, or even just to come and sit before the Lord with us at the Basilica. If you would like to have a Come Home Prayer Bookmark, you are welcome to have one. Please pick them up in the Church en-trance, instead of from the red Hymnals.

Carolina Catholic for August For our second August show, we once again interview Father Donald Calloway, a convert to the Catholic and a member of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. Before his conver-sion to Catholicism, he was a high school dropout who had been kicked out of a foreign country, institutionalized twice, and thrown in jail multiple times. After his radical conversion, he earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Theology from the Franciscan University of Steuben-ville, M.Div. and S.T.B. degrees from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, and an S.T.L. in Mariology from the International Marian Research Institute in Dayton, Ohio. In this book, Fr. Calloway has written what is one of the most comprehensive books ever written on the Rosary. He deftly negotiates the complexities of the story of the Rosary over many centuries, weaving the historical, theological, and devotional strands into a veritable masterpiece of scholarship and pie-ty. This book should turn every one of its readers into a champion of the rosary. This beautiful show on the Holy Rosary will air on Sun-day, August 28th, at 6 p.m. Wilmington Catholic Radio can be found on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1FM, and 103.1 or on our website at wilmingtoncatholicradio.com.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – August 27 and August 28, 2016 6

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Mary Social Ministry/Tileston Outreach In today’s Liturgy we are urged to “break out of our small circle of friends and help those who might be neglected”. Since St. Mary’s is recognized as the “church who serves the poor” we certainly want to make sure that we work hard so that as many as possible will have a place at the Table. The Food program that the Outreach Program at Tileston provides demands an incredible amount of hard, “hands-on”, sweat-labor and those stairs to the basement seem to get steeper and steeper! Many people have come forth to help us “feed the hungry:. TEFAP – The Emergency Federal Assistance Program provides about l/3rd of our

needs. Once a month a team of about 8 men go to the Food Bank to pick up our allotment and then return to the Outreach to unload it from our truck and shelve it.

K of C #1074 volunteers beg for Food at Local Grocery stores on an average of every 6 weeks and then carry it here to the basement to be put up. Their drive provides about 1/3 of the food we distribute.

Each day several men and women bag the foods so that the interviewers can take it to the guest they are serving. The bags are provided by a parishioner.

Two families make lunches for 35 people, giving our guests an “extra touch of kindness” on Tuesday and Wednesdays. What a treat!

The School Children donate a can of food when they come to celebrate Eucharist on Friday and then bring it to the Ministry.

Parishioners bring food each week, especially the First Sunday of the Month called “Share Sunday”. We remember that because we are fed at the Table, we are called to feed others.

Each Tuesday, using funds collected at the K of C food drives, a parishioner purchases food at the Food Bank for 18cents a pound.

On Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays during the month 26 parishioners take turns to go to the Food Lion at Masonboro Commons to pick up food that otherwise would be discarded. More trips up and down the stairs to the Outreach – but no problem because we are feeding our brothers and sisters in need and they are most grateful.

Parishioners pick up bread twice a week from Apple Annie’s and once from Atlanta Bread.

Volunteers use funds from 3Grants to purchase both Diabetic Food and Food for the Homeless.

Our Thanksgiving Program receives 110+ complete Thanksgiving Dinner baskets that are distributed to selected families and this is repeated for 30+ families that we serve at Christmas.

And so with gratitude we pray the Responsorial Psalm, “God in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor” – especially here at the Basilica Shrine.

Sister Isaac—Office of Social Ministry

Special Need for the Week: If you have items to donate please hold them until after Labor Day, or share them with one of the many Agencies in the area. We make a special plea not to leave items in the stairwell since no one is here to process them and they generally end up in the dumpster since people passing by sort through them. This does make extra work for the staff. Come September, we will be in need of volunteers to pick up food on the third Tuesday of the Month at Food Lion in Masonboro Com-mons. It is a hard job since coolers containing the food have to be carried down our stairs to the Food area in the Ministry. A large car, van or truck is needed to hold the coolers and two people doing it really helps. The commitment takes about two hours, once a month. If you are able to volunteer for this ministry, please call the Office at 762-5491 x135.

RCIA The 2016-2017 RCIA process begins in several weeks. Contact John Walsh at the Parish Office (762-5491 x114) or Maryann at [email protected] or Beverly at [email protected] for additional information.

8 Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – August 27 and August 28, 2016 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Principal Joyce M. Price

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16 I hope that you have enjoyed the many weeks of summer break with your friends and families. Routine schedules have started as we have wel-comed you to school. Due to the construction projects in the Tileston Center (elevator, adult bathrooms, kitchenettes, work spaces on both floors, Science Lab on 2nd floor, refinishing of entrance floor inside Tileston), there may be entrance or travel changes. If so, I will update you. These are all very positive projects for our school. We may have to change plans now and again, so please bear with us. It is my pleasure to introduce our faculty and staff assignments along with information about our newest faculty: Mrs. Stephanie Watts – Assistant Principa PreK3- Mrs. Amy Gratwic PreK4 – Mrs. Molly Schumitsch Kind. – Mrs. Elizabeth White 1st grade – Mrs. Cathy O’Connell 2nd grade – Mrs. Heather Lowery 3rd grade – TBA (Paper Work Pending)

St. Mary School Athletics FALL SPORTS: Our fall sports have begun but it’s not too late to join in on the fun. If you daughter is in the 6-8 grade they can participate on our volleyball team or our tennis team. If you son or daughter is in the 4th thru 8th grade they can be a member of our cross country pro-gram. If they are interested contact me, Tony Viollis at [email protected]. They need to fill out our three required forms before participating. You can pick them up in the school office, see me, or go online to my athletic web site and download them. THANK YOU LAST YEAR BOOSTER BOARD!!! Over the summer, last year’s booster board made many positive changes and additions to our gym. They purchased a new mascot uni-form for our falcon to fly high at our games. They purchased new cushion athletic chairs with our falcon logo and name on them for our teams to sit on during games. Also they built and installed acoustic panels to help with the sound with our sound system. To go along with the panels we purchased 4 more speakers so people in the bleachers up stairs can hear the announcements. We padded some of the doors in the gym to help with the kids if they run into them. They took the sum-mer to paint the trim and brighten up the gym to go along with the new floor. Our big improvement was to put in very large ceiling fans to help circulate air while the students are in Physical education class and during athletic contests. These will be installed the last week of Au-gust. With our large turnout of students for our cross country team the boosters purchased an additional 18 uniforms so we will not turn any student away from participating. Thank you Tom Kennedy, Leo Ac-cera, Kathleen Moore, Jean Nichols and Paula Smith for all you have done for our athletic program.
