A Note From Fr. Mike VetranoA Note From Fr. Mike VetranoA Note From Fr. Mike Vetrano August 26 Dear parish family, It’s been a warm and wonderful summer. I had a chance to get away the last few weeks for vacation. Some good friends took me on a hiking adventure to Italy to celebrate my 60th birthday (last September). Most people don’t think of Italy as a hiking destination but the Tuscan hills in the north are absolutely beautiful and hiking all day under the hot Tuscan sun is a great excuse for enjoying the Gelato! I am really thankful to Fr. Bill for making it possible for me to get away and to Fr. Paul and Fr. Ed for helping out as they always do. They are amazing men and I am so grateful to have their help in ministry here. I really did miss being here with you and as much as I enjoyed the time it was hard to interrupt my process of learning about our parish. In my last note I invited heads of ministry to meet with me and many have done so. I also have invited people to mail or email their thoughts about goals for our future an I received a good number of very thoughtful notes. This is a wonderfully alive community and I enjoy hearing you tell me about both our history and our future. This week I would like to invite you to take part in a survey and help me with three very important questions: 1. What is the best thing about Sacred Hearts that keeps you coming here as a parishioner? 2. What is one thing that concerns you about the future of our parish? 3. What goal should we work for in the next few years and what would you like to see me do or

begin as a leader to achieve this goal? There is a page in the bulletin this week that you can use to give me some feedback. You can drop it in the collection basket, send it to the rectory, or just put it in an email to me [email protected]. I hope to get many responses and I also promise to report back on what you tell me in this survey. Thank you in advance for taking the time to do this and please remember that you, the people of Sacred Hearts Parish, are for me the most important part of this community. I value your thoughts. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Mike Vetrano

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The Eucharist was never meant to be only “comfort

food,” something that makes us feel warm and

satisfied. It is to be bread for the journey,

nourishment for the task that God has set for our

community and for each one of us. Thus it is not

surprising to see some walk away in today’s Gospel,

for they understood that recognizing Jesus as the

bread of life is a commitment to changing one’s life.

St. Augustine, whose feast we celebrate this

week, once observed that in celebrating the Eucharist

we become what we receive, the Body of Christ. As

we conclude the series of reflections in John’s Gospel

on Jesus as the bread of life, it is appropriate to think

about the role that the Eucharist plays in our lives and

in our parish. It is in the Eucharist that we are

nourished and renew our commitment in faith to

serve the Lord. How does the parish social ministry

carry out that mandate? How do you carry it out in

your own life? Is it related in any way to the

celebration of the Eucharist? How does celebrating

Mass Sunday after Sunday make a difference in your

life and in the world? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

August 26, 2012 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 28 , 2012 Today we remember Saint Augustine, Saint Monica’s son. As a young man Augustine studied many philosophies and religions, but he was never happy with what he found. Finally, after many years, God’s word came to him and he realized the truth of the gospel. It changed his life. Augustine was baptized, and he

returned to his home in Africa. There he became a great bishop, preacher, and writer. Perhaps no other writings except the Bible have had so great an influence on Christianity. His most famous book tells the story of his life. It is called, Confessions, and is the story of God’s love pursuing him. You will probably read it someday. Reading 1 John 4:7-10, 10-12 Listen to the words of the first letter of John

My dear friends, we must love each other. Love comes from God, and when we love each other, it shows that we have been given new life. We are now God’s children, and we know him. God is love, and anyone who doesn’t love others has never known God. God showed his love for us when he sent his only Son into the world to give us life. God sent His Son to be the sacrifice by which our sins are forgiven. Dear friends, since God loved us this much, we must love each other. No one have ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and God’s love is truly in our hearts. The Word of the Lord

KID’S PAGE Prayers and history of the Church August 27, 2012 Today we remember Saint Monica, a strong Christian woman of North Africa. When her son, Augustine, joined another religion, Monica never stopped praying that God would help him see things more clearly. And she never stopped teaching him the truth of the Christian faith. After many years, Monica’s prayers were answered. Augustine became a Christian. After her death, Augustine wrote that those who knew her greatly praised and honored God, “because they recognized [God’s] presence in her heart, for the fruit of her holy life bore witness to this.” Saint Monica died in 387. Reading Matthew 7:7-11 Listen to the words of the holy gospel according to Matthew Jesus said, “Ask and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you. Everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. “Would any of you give your hungry child a stone if the child asked for some bread? Would you give your child a snake if the child asked for a fish? As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask.” The Gospel of the Lord Reflection Like Monica, do I often pray for someone? Do I even pray when it does not seem that God is listening? Am I able to be still and peaceful, remembering that God is with me? Do I cause my parents unnecessary worry?
