RESPONDUS – CANVAS TUTORIAL
Formatting an Exam for Respondus in MS Word
Respondus is a program that will upload Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, True/False, Essay, Short
Answer, Fill-the-Blank, and Matching questions into an exam or quiz in Canvas. The questions must
be in a MS Word document and must be structured in the following format so Respondus will
recognize it.
1. In a MS Word document, turn off the Automatic
Numbered List option. File menu > Options >
Proofing > AutoCorrect Options and un-check
the Automatic numbered lists option on the
“Autoformat As You Type” tab.
Basic Question Format
NUMBER EXAMPLE:
1.
OR
1)
QUESTION EXAMPLE:
1. WHERE IS CTE LOCATED?
OR
1) WHERE IS CTE LOCATED?
CORRECT ANSWER EXAMPLE:
1. WHERE IS CTE LOCATED?
*a. 2nd
floor b. 1
st floor
Each question must begin with a question number, followed by either a
period "." or a close parentheses ")". The question wording must follow the question number.
Note: one space should be placed between the question number
(after the period) and the question wording.
Correct answers for auto-grading are indicated by placing an asterisk (*)
directly in front of the answer choice (do not put a space between the
asterisk and the answer choice).

FEEDBACK EXAMPLE: 1. WHERE IS CTE LOCATED?
~ That is correct!
@ That is incorrect.
*a. 2nd. Floor
b. 1st. Floor
General Feedback (or "Explanations") for individual answer choices may
be imported by placing the tilde “~” symbol in front of the feedback for
a correct answer. The @ symbol can be used to indicate feedback for
incorrect answers. There must be at least one space to the right of the
~ and the @ symbols and the text you want displayed for the feedback.
The feedback must appear before the answer choices. Feedback will be
seen when the student reviews the test.
Note: To import feedback for individual answer choices of multiple-
choice questions, place the feedback immediately after the answer
choice and begin the line with the @ symbol. There must be at least
one space between the @ symbol and the feedback text.
Point Values
EXAMPLE: Points: 2
1. WHERE IS CTE LOCATED?
*a. 2nd. Floor
b. 1st. Floor
nd
Points can be set for each question or for a group of questions. Points are
set by adding “Points:” followed by a space and the point value. The points
value is used for the next question and all following questions until a new
value is set.
Multiple Choice Question Format
MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAMPLE:
1. WHERE IS CTE LOCATED?
*a. 2nd. Floor
b. 1st. Floor nd
The Question is in the basic question format. The answers are all on
separate lines following the question. Each answer begins with a letter
followed by a period followed by a space followed by the text of the
answer choice. The correct answer is preceded by an asterisk with NO
SPACE after the asterisk. NOTE: do not use spaces or tabs to align your
answers.
True and False Question Format
TRUE/FALSE EXAMPLE:
1. CTE IS LOCATED ON THE 2ND
FLOOR
*a. True b. False
The format for True and False questions is identical to the format for Multiple Choice. Note: It is important to list the “True” answer choice first. If “False” is listed
first , Respondus will import it as a “multiple choice” question.

Essay Question Format
NOTE: For any question types other than Multiple Choice and True/False the first line of formatting must
begin with coding to define the type of question.
ESSAY EXAMPLE:
TYPE: E 1. EXPLAIN THE FUNCTIONS OF
CTE.
For Essay questions the code is “Type: E”. There must be a space after the colon. This is followed on the next line by the question number, and the question wording.
Multiple Answer Question Format
Multiple Answer Example:
Type: MR 1. Select all of the CTE office locations. *a. 2
nd floor
b. 1st
floor *c. Washington State *d. Lower Level e. 5
th Floor
The logic for importing multiple answers questions is similar to what is
described above for importing multiple choice questions. The only
difference being that more than one correct answer can and should be
selected by the student. The question type code for Multiple Answer questions is “Type: MR”. Feedback may also be used in Multiple Answer questions.

Fill-the-Blank Question Format
Fill-The-Blank Example:
Type: F 1. CTE is located on the floor.
FILL-THE-BLANK ANSWER EXAMPLE:
Type: F
1. CTE is located on the floor
Fill-the-blank questions may be imported using the code
"Type: F". This is followed by the question number, and the
question wording.
Even when using auto-grading you should quickly check Fill-
the-Blank answers for an acceptable answer that was not
included in your options.
a. Second b. 2nd c. Two

Matching Question Format
Matching Example:
Type: MT 1. Match each office with its location. a. Testing Center = Lower Level b. CTE = 2
nd Floor
c. Visitor Center = 1st. Floor d. Faculty Offices = 5th Floor
st
Matching questions can also be imported through
Respondus and auto-graded. The code for a Matching
Question is “Type: MT”.
Matching questions are formatted using a statement as the
question (see example) and then lettering the terms and connecting
each term with the correct match using an equal sign (=). There
should be one space on each side of the equal sign.
