Some Simple Expectations: Be on time... every time. A minute late is considered late.

Don’t miss class unless it is a serious emergency. Make sure you email Dr. Trayes (trayes@temple.edu) and Ms. Fry (sarahfry@temple.edu) about the issue.

Don’t miss your deadlines. You have deadlines for turning in prints in person and turning in prints to the Gmail account. Both deadlines are important.

Manage your time. Don’t wait until the last minute to print... there may not be any computers available.

Don’t interrupt class to go to the bathroom. Go before or after. If you must leave because of an emergency take your bags with you so you don’t have to interrupt the class again by sitting back down.

No cell phones ever. No texting ever. Turn your cell phones off when you enter the room. Vibrating cell phones are distracting to you and your neighbors.

Don’t use computers while either Dr. Trayes or Ms. Fry is teaching.

Push yourself to improve each week. You have it in you.

Buying Your Materials:

1. Photo PaperTypes of Photo Paper:

Photo Paper must be 8.5” X 11”

I recommend a paper with some sort of glossy finish to get the best print with our printers. That would be all of the above except for the matte options. Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl is a favorite among many.

2. Mat Board

Mat Board is a board that you will mount your photos to. This will add to the presentation of your prints.

Mounting Board Must Be: *Black, with black edges. If the edges are white (because the back of the board is white) you MUST use a black sharpie and black out the edges. *11” X 14” (NO EXCEPTIONS!) Don’t hand in board that is larger or smaller. Break out the ruler and make sure it is this size. *The board should be thick enough that it is sturdy but NO FOAM BOARD.

3. Mounting TissueThe only acceptable Mounting Tissue is the ColorMount Permanent Dry Mounting Tissue. Do not get glue or self adhesive mounting tissue. We have presses in the lab that you will use to mount.

You can expect to be making around 70 prints. Every semester it fluctuates based on the class so you might not want to buy everything at once. Still, I would recommend not just buying new material every week because you will save money if you buy some items in bulk.

Each week some prints are chosen for display on the wall located on the third floor of Annenberg. From those prints a few are cho-sen to be put on the class site. Please keep track of the site as we move along and see if your photographs made it there.

The Gmail account is an important part of our class. Every week you will turn in prints in person to Dr. Trayes during class. Those prints that you turned in physically must also be turned in digitally. You will email your prints as attachments to photospring12@gmail.com FROM YOUR PERSONAL TEMPLE EMAIL ACCOUNTS. Then you will log into the class Gmail account (photospring12) and tag the email you just sent with your name and the assignment. Ms. Fry will show you how to do this in lab.

Some need to know COnventions :on the back of your mat board: You will write your name, the assignment and the date at the very minimum. This will be legible to others. It is recommended that you also write the ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed of your image so you can easily learn how these three key functions alter your photographs.

renaming images for the gmail account: You must rename all of your images for the Gmail account based on our naming conventions. The convention is as follows: last name_assignment_image number.jpg

IF YOUR prints have cutlines:We will go over how to write cutlines in lab. Make sure you follow the conventions given. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU ATTACH YOUR CUTLINES AS A .DOC FILE TO YOUR EMAIL THAT YOU SEND TO THE GMAIL ACCOUNT. DO NOT SEND IN YOUR PRINTS WITHOUT THE CUTLINES ATTAHED.

Lab rules: you must sign in when you enter. The sign in sheet is on the cabinet as you enter.

No personal printing All prints that you make are made for this class.

The lab is for work If you want to do things other than work (ex. checking your Facebook etc.) that is okay buy only as long as there are not other students waiting for a computer.

Do not go through the drawers/ cabinets any reason

Do not tamper with the Equipment

Clean up after yourself (this includes cleaning up your paper scraps after you have cut your images for mounting).

Lab monitors are there to help you. Ask them questions if you have them.

No loud cell phone conversations. It’s rude.

If you play any music or interview that others can hear you must ask the group if your choice is okay. If people say no then you must use headphones.

You are responsible for your own equipment. If you leave your materials in the lab and they are lost, stolen or used the loss is on you.
