THE NATIONAL LEAGUE U19 ALLIANCE SEASON REVIEW

END OF YEAR EDITION - JULY 2017

The Basford Academy side were unable to secure the league title and it was ultimately a 3-0 defeat away at Boston in March that cost us the title. However, despite finishing second it was still a great achievement in a very competitive league. The lads can take great pride in being the only side to beat the champions in the league this season.

UNITED 1ST TEAM FINISH THE SEASON IN STYLE BUT JUST MISS OUT ON THE END OF SEASON PARTY

A thumping 6-0 victory over a Newcastle Town team who pregame had the same playoff aspirations as Basford rounded off the season.

Unfortunately, it just wasn’t quite enough as Basford missed the playoffs by a agonising solitary point as AFC R&D clinched the final spot with a victory today.

A stunning 2017 that saw Basford go on a fabulous run of only 3 defeats in 24 games and the last 9 unbeaten, saw us fall just short of what looked an impossible task at the end of 2016. Without question the 4 teams in this season’s playoffs may breathe a sigh of relief that Basford didn’t get in based on current form.

BASFORD WELL BEATEN IN FINAL

Carlton Town destroyed Basford United’s hopes of a hat trick of Notts Senior Cup wins with an emphatic 4-1 victory in the final at Meadow Lane.

Although Basford enjoyed plenty of possession Carlton’s sharper and more direct approach proved decisive. In a lively start, Basford forced three corners in the first five minutes, with Kieran Wells denied by a fine save from Carlton keeper Jack Steggles. Carlton sounded a warning when William Mellors-Blair shot against the post and then Aaron Hooton punished hesitancy in the Basford defence by firing past Saul Deeney from twelve yards to give Carlton a fourteenth minute lead.

Basford came back, Steggles saving from Ben Hutchinson and Kyle Dixon and after twenty seven minutes they were level, Hutchinson scoring from the penalty spot after Kieran Wells had been brought down.Five minutes later, Sam Osbourn set up Dixon, who shot was too high, then Wells’ shot rebounded into Steggles’ arms off the post. Carlton regained the lead a minute before the break, Mellors-Blair’s shot was blocked by Deeney and Daniel Elliott pounced on the rebound to turn smartly and shoot into the roof of the net.

Basford started the second half with intent and Wells grazed the bar with a shot and they had the ball in the net but the flag was up for offside.

END OF YEAR EDITION - JULY 2017

Both keepers were in action, Steggles saving from Osborne and at the other end Deeney denied Hooton with a fine save.

Basford were seeing plenty of the ball but were struggling to break through a well marshalled defence.Lewis Carr kept Basford in the game with a last ditch tackle to stop Hooton in the 69th minute, but five minutes later Williams Mellors-Blair scored Carlton’s third when he reacted quickly to fire a loose ball into the corner of the net.Hooton scored his second of the night five minutes from the end, intercepting Deon Meikle’s back header to score past Deeney.

COMMUNITY FIGHT BACK IN VAIN

Basford United Community lost a thrilling Notts Intermediate Cup Final 4-3 to AFC Dunkirk at Eastwood CFC last night.

Community took an early lead, then conceded three goals in a catastrophic four minute spell to trail 3-1 at half time. They fought their way back to 3-3 before losing to Sam Harbottle’s penalty six minutes from time.

Community started well and took the lead after three minutes with a spectacular shot from Zaire Burchall-Jackson which hit the top corner of the net before anyone moved.

The roof fell in for Community between 18 and 22 minutes as the Dunkirk forwards made their pace count, scoring three times. The impressive Tim Berridge scored the first two with shots that gave Danny Brown no chance and George Harrison added the third with a composed finish.

Burchall-Jackson had the ball in the net again but was penalised for a foul and on the stroke of half time Community had a real let off as Berridge found Harbottle unmarked in front of goal but his back heel did not trouble Brown.

To their credit, Community did not let their heads drop and were rewarded on the hour, when Betilson Paixao hammered in from long range.

Dunkirk went close as Harrison’s header came back off the bar, but with twelve to play, it was 3-3 as Community drew level through Malcolm Podier’s low shot.

As both sides pushed for the winner, Berridge was brought down by Brown and after a delay for treatment to the injured striker, Harbottle showed great composure to confidently score from the spot to give Dunkirk a decisive lead.

PENALTY HEARTBREAK FOR BASFORD VETS

Basford United Vets lost 10-9 on penalties to Copplehouse in the final of the Over 40s Vets National Masters after a dramatic 3-3 draw.

In front of a 300 strong crowd, Merseyside based Copplehouse set the tone in the opening minutes and took a well-deserved early lead, Martin Carruthers levelled for Basford on the half hour, only for Copplehouse to score again, taking a 2-1 lead into half time.

Whatever was said in the Basford dressing room at half time, it did the trick as the team attacked with renewed vigour. Steve Robinson tied the game up at 2-2 with a fine goal and the side saw several chances go begging.

In the second minute of added time Copplehouse scored to seemingly clinch the game, but the Basford side had other ideas and Chris Freestone rose to head home a free kick in the fifth minute of time added on, the referee blowing for time as the ball hit the back of the net. (pictured above)

3-3 and into the penalty shootout.

Scott Miles saved the first kick to give Basford the advantage, but it was 4-4 after five shots each and into sudden death. Some high class penalties saw the sides level until it came down to the keepers, Miles’ shot saved to give victory to Copplehouse.
