We create chemistrythat helpslush landscapeslove thrivingcities.

The construction industry currently accounts for about half of the world’s consumption of energy and resources. It’s a substantial amount - but it can be reduced, if you just add the right chemistry. We’ve developed solutions that help our customers build structures that are more durable and energy-efficient.

When we can build more while using less, it’s because at BASF, we create chemistry.

The BASF story

At BASF, we create chemistry for a sustainable future.

As the needs of society changed, so did BASF. Our company went on to pioneer innovations which have been vital to the growth and sustainability of our society. In the early 1900s a BASF chemist, Carl Bosch, succeeded in capturing atmospheric nitrogen on an industrial scale to manufacture synthetic ammonia, which was used to produce nitrogen fertilizers. These fertilizers were, and continue to be instrumental in providing nutrition for a growing world population.

BASF scientists also created the magnetic tape, polystyrene and the first three-way catalyst for automobiles.

Throughout history, we have continued to diversify and grow our portfolio to better serve our customers.

In the early 1860s Henry William Perkin, an English chemist, coincidentally discovered the first Mauveine coal tar dye and thus the possibility of using coal tar as a raw material for synthetic dyes. As the owner of a coal gas company in Mannheim, Germany, Friedrich Engelhorn recognized the opportunities for the coal tar his company produced and set out to form a single company for the entire dye manufacturing process.

Soon after its inception, BASF gained a leading position in the world dyes market. The synthetic indigo was sold worldwide, especially in China, where jackets dyed with the famous ‘indigo blue’ became traditional clothing. Later, in the 1960s, indigo blue denim jeans became a wardrobe staple for an entire generation and continue to be popular today.

BASF is a German acronym for “Badische Anilin- & Sodafabrik” which stands for the products our company originally manufactured (aniline and sodium carbonate) and the location of our original factory (Fabrik) in the territory of Baden (Badische).

Celebrating 150 years of creating chemistry

It's not every day that a company celebrates 150 years of operations. In addition to reflecting on BASF’s rich history, we marked this milestone by exploring opportunities to collaborate around three topics which are paramount to the sustainability of our society: smart energy, food and urban living. We invited stakeholders from across industries and around the globe to participate in our Creator Space™ co-creation program which included events ranging from Science Symposia to Jamming Sessions.

In Toronto, Chris Hadfield, former astronaut and first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station, and Ed Robertson, lead singer and founding member of the Canadian rock band, Barenaked Ladies, joined BASF Canada’s customers and employees to celebrate BASF’s 150th anniversary.

How – our values

How we act is as important as what we do.

It is crucial that each and every member of the BASF team understands and lives our corporate values. Our values guide how we interact with society, our partners and each other.

Creative We have the courage to pursue bold ideas. We inspire each other and build value-adding partnerships. We constantly improve our products, services and solutions.

Open We value diversity – in people, opinions and experience. That is why we foster dialogue based on honesty, respect and mutual trust. We explore our talents and capabilities.

Responsible We act responsibly as an integral part of society. In doing so, we strictly adhere to our compliance standards. We never compromise on safety.

Entrepreneurial We all contribute to our company’s success, as individuals and as a team. We turn market needs into customer solutions. We take ownership and embrace personal accountability.

Responsible Care®

As BASF works toward a sustainable future, we are committed to Responsible Care, a voluntary, worldwide initiative, launched in 1985 by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC).

Responsible Care has been recognized by the United Nations and is now practiced in more than sixty countries around the world. It takes into consideration all aspects of a company’s business, including operations, product stewardship and environmental, health and safety performance.

In 2014, BASF Canada successfully completed a third party re-verification of its Responsible Care management systems. This was our company’s sixth successful verification and recognizes our commitment to protecting the health and safety of our employees, communities and the environment.

Responsible Care is integral to how we conduct our business and operate our facilities; it provides the framework for goals, objectives, standards and measurements that meet or surpass regulatory requirements, create industry best practices, and develop solutions to contribute to long-term sustainability.

We work with customers and suppliers to help ensure our products are handled safely, and champion Responsible Care principles across the business value chain. It is important for us to maintain an open dialogue with stakeholders to address their concerns, inform them of our progress, and assure them of our continued dedication.

Collaborating for a sustainable future

BASF is developing solutions to help address the current and future needs of society – but we cannot do it alone. The achievement of a more sustainable future is dependent on collaboration across industries and along the entire value chain.

In 2015, we joined EXCEL: Canada’s Business & Sustainability Partnership, made up of major Canadian corporations who are committed to sustainable development leadership through continual improvement of environmental and social performance.

As we continue to look for ways to drive sustainable solutions, we have established a Canadian Sustainability Council. The team, comprised of employees representing various business units and locations, supports leadership in embedding BASF’s sustainability strategy across our Canadian organization.

Commitment to a safe workplace

Above all else, BASF values the health, safety and security of our employees, customers, suppliers and neighbours, and the protection of the environment.

As part of our commitment to Responsible Care®, we operate our facilities in a safe and environmentally responsible fashion, yet we do not view the acceptance of rules and regulations as being the only success factors for safety. For us, it is important to have the active commitment of every employee. With all of our families in mind, we encourage our employees to look out for each other and continuously look for ways to keep our workplaces safe.

BASF presents the power of chemistry at GLOBE

We believe it is essential to engage in a global dialogue on sustainability, which is why we participate in events like GLOBE, North America’s largest sustainability conference. These initiatives provide us with a platform for sharing best practices and identifying opportunities where we can work together with stakeholders from across industries and around the world to address global challenges.

Creating chemistry with our customers

Our company’s portfolio serves nearly every industry. Here you can find some examples of collaborations with our customers in the construction, agriculture and automotive industries.

Helping growers get the most from every acre

As arable land continues to decrease, one of the toughest world challenges is the need to feed our growing population. Growers worldwide are searching for innovative solutions to increase yields and productivity. This is becoming more and more important for canola growers in Canada – the largest producer of canola in the world – where straight cutting canola (as opposed to the traditional swathing method) is becoming an increasingly popular practice. It can provide better time management and control of resources at harvest and allows canola more time to mature, which has been shown to produce larger seeds with higher oil content.

This practice requires a pre-harvest application to help dry down the canola crop prior to harvest and remove weeds. By providing both contact and systemic activity, BASF’s Heat® LQ herbicide offers the benefits of both a harvest aid and a desiccant. It is designed to not only give growers the ability to get in the field and harvest sooner, but it also assists in the preparation for the following season by helping control winter annual and perennial weeds.

We straight cut canola. This year was our first year; did 700 acres. The dockage was good; the yield was good; the seed size finished out nice, went through the combines beautiful. Really happy with it.”

Kelsey SolickHalkirk, AB

Building more while using less

The increasing urbanization of our population will require new concepts for housing and construction. With the construction industry already accounting for about half of the world’s consumption of energy and resources, buildings will need to be more energy efficient. We are working together with builders to meet the demand for more sustainable communities. Whether new construction, retrofit or restoration, chemistry helps to improve energy efficiency, increases durability and helps speed construction.

Our HP+TM Wall System XR Series provides builders with a solution for improved structural integrity, thermal efficiency and reduced air leakage. Builders use the HP+ Wall System XR Series to construct walls that are no thicker than conventional walls, with seamless integration into conventional construction projects.

We opted for the BASF HP+™ Wall System for the air-tightness and energy savings it offers our customers.”

Innovating for a cleaner drive

With the limited availability of fossil fuels and an increasing number of vehicles on our streets, the automotive industry requires new concepts which help improve environmental performance and energy efficiency. As the world’s leading automotive supplier in the chemical industry, we are working with our partners to drive research and innovation forward to address global automotive needs, including lightweighting and reducing carbon emissions.

BASF, Magna, and Ford recently collaborated to create a new, lighter grille for the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang. The resulting

part, a grille opening reinforcement made from carbon fiber, is 24% lighter than the previous plastic-metal hybrid design. Manufactured with our Ultramid® polyamide technology, the new part features 20% short carbon fiber composition and is 2.5 pounds lighter.

The predecessor of this part was already a plastic-metal hybrid so to reduce the weight of the part, and quite significantly, is a real achievement.“BASF’s material properties and expertise allowed us to take advantage of our resistive implant welding joining method with a carbon fiber polyamide composite material, an industry-first application and a key contributor to the success of our design.”
