obsolete and that no one else can seem to find. “I like totell people that if I can’t find it, you don’t need it,” Wilkiesaid.“We have recently become a dealer for Baldwin filters,
which gives us an alternative filter brand with competitivepricing,” Wilkie said. “Some of our customers are goingthrough a difficult time and keeping their costs down is amajor objective. With that in mind, we offer a large vari-ety of aftermarket parts. We have a tremendous source foraftermarket undercarriages and specialize in locating partsthat are no longer available from manufacturers such asFiat-Allis, Trojan, Clark, Dynahoe, Massey Ferguson andBarber Greene. We also can offer our customers a substan-tial savings on rebuilt starters and alternators.“We are also a dealer for Perkins engines and Perkins
engine parts. You will be surprised at how many manufac-turers of equipment worldwide use the Perkins engines.Regardless of the brand of equipment that you are using,if it is powered by a Perkins engine we can be your engineparts and warranty source.”The parts department of Baschmann

The parts department car-ries items such as load chains, binders, util-ity lights, fluids, lubricants, solvents andadhesives at reasonable prices. Rentals — Anytime You Need Them
The sales team realizes that time ismoney for contractors and will often goto the job site to see in person what chal-lenges the contractor is facing. “Doing this allows our team to help
provide the right tool for the job, whether it is plowing snow, grinding astump or digging a basement,” saidSales Manager Bob Tracy.“Rentals often lead to sales; after 25
years in the heavy equipment industry,we are very good at securing financingthat fits our customers needs,” saidPeter. Purchase and lease plans arearranged through major finance compa-nies, local banks and manufacturersponsored programs. “This is a capital intense business for
dealers and contractors, we pride our-selves on the funding process,” Peteradded. “Because of the upstate [NewYork] economy, many people tend not tobuy until there is a clear need and maywant to rent a machine before makingthe commitment to purchase it.“The company rents equipment across
the state of New York on a daily, weeklyor monthly basis.
An extensive variety of earthmoving and land-clearing equipment is available for sale or rent.

Osmose UtilitiesServices Inc. is a utilitiescontractor that specializesin wood pole inspectionand repair. It has been inbusiness for 77 years andworks in all 50 states, pri-marily for electric powercompanies, repairing, restoring and replacingwooden power poles, oftenin rough rural terrain areas. An ongoing challenge
for the Buffalo, N.Y.-basedcompany was to find a wayof transporting workersand equipment to difficultto reach areas to repair orreplace power poles.Another element of thechallenge was to find autility vehicle that could behauled by trailer, but notone so big that a CDLlicense was necessary. “When we searched on
the Internet it appeared thatthe Terex ASV would bestfit our needs,” said MikeNadig, fleet manager ofOsmose Utilities. “Wewanted to look at a rentalpurchase because in thepast we have run into situ-ations where we were notable to gain access to thepoles in extreme areas tomake the repairs. This was lost revenue for us and alsolost revenue for our customers, the power companies. If we could not access a pole to repair it, ultimately theywould have to replace the entire pole.” Osmose ultimately purchased and had customized a
Terex (ASV) ST-50 Scout rubber-tracked utility vehi-cle.“From the information we found on the Internet, we
contacted Baschmann Services’ Sales Manager BobTracy,” said Nadig. “We worked closely with Bob andthe owner of Baschmann Services, Pete Baschmann, toretrofit the ST-50 Scout to meet our needs and they

To date, we’ve only hadone small issue and over the telephone Baschmann’sservice technicians were able to identify the problem, which only required us to replace a small filter.”Osmose’s ST-50 currently is being used to repair
utility posts in the mountains of Pennsylvania. “Whenwe started this project we had a very broad idea of whattype of equipment we wanted and the ST-50 is perfectfor this job,” said Nadig. For more information, visit

The father and son team of Ed and Rod Lorenz ownR.E. Lorenz Construction Inc., a site contracting com-pany that focuses on western New York and theSouthern Tier.
The company’s roots go back to 1946 when Ed’sfather, Walter, started a construction company inBuffalo, N.Y. Walter, who had been a union carpenter, wanted to make a run at being self-employed, so hestarted a construction company focused, at that time, onpaving.
Today, the company owns a fleet of excavators con-sisting primarily of Kobelcos — all purchased fromBaschmann Services. The excavators include models480, 235 and 290.
Rod Lorenz is a big fan ofhis company’s Kobelco fleet.
“The Kobelco 235 is thebest balanced, smoothestoperating machine in its classby far,” said Ed Lorenz.“Every once in a while amanufacturer hits uponsomething that is exactlyright and for Kobelco it istheir model 235 excavator. We have put 4,500 hours onour 235 and it has required noattention from us other thanregular scheduled mainte-nance. It is an exceptionalmachine.”
“We tested our Kobelco480 against comparable sizedmodels. It had more power, more breakout force and was as fast as any othermachine on the market. Believe me, we tried them alland the Kobelco was the best in its class. We are cur-rently using the machine on an environmental cleanupjob in the Buffalo area where it’s working side by sidewith other contractors. Our Kobelco outworks themall,” he said.
R.E. Lorenz is currently doing some specializedenvironmental cleanup work on which it also is using aKobelco 290 equipped with a Kent KF22 hammer onrent. The company also owns a fleet of eight trucks andseven dozers.
The Lorenz’s are very pleased with the service thatthey have received over the years from BaschmannServices.
“Baschmann Services nearly always has the equip-
ment that we need to keep our customerssatisfied. On the rare occasion that theydo not, they are more than willing to mod-ify a machine’s setup to adapt to it to ourspecific needs. Bob Tracy and PeteBaschmann have a broad knowledge oftheir equipment’s capabilities and theirassistance is invaluable to us,” said EdLorenz.
“We are a small, family-owned compa-ny. Our customers are used to dealingwith the owners of our business. Weappreciate getting that same type of serv-ice and communication from one of our
primary suppliers, Baschmann Services. PeteBaschmann is personally vested in the success of hiscompany as are we. Baschmann Services made us feelas though we were a large company with hundreds ofmachines even though we were not and I really appre-ciated this level of service.”
“For one of the jobs that we are currently on weneeded a very specialized, aggressive bucket to breakthrough some very difficult digging conditions. BobTracy recommended a 36-inch narrow severe dutybucket. He was able to locate the bucket we needed inOhio and have it delivered to us and fitted to ourmachine in a very timely manner. That bucket type isprobably the only digging tool that would have workedin these severe conditions.” CEG

Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder. And in 2004,Harry Anderson, general manager of Suit-Kote’s Polkvillecrushed stone facility, was able to see past an upside-down,weed-covered piece of equipment to the treasure it couldbecome. And in the process, Anderson and Suit-Kote found a valuable
partner in Baschmann Services. The hidden treasure Anderson discovered was an abandoned
and forgotten piece of equipment in one of Suit-Kote’s gravelpits. It was a Kolberg Pioneer screening plant that had been aban-doned for approximately 15 years and had been originally man-ufactured in the early 1970s. Anderson felt that the machine wasnot in as bad a shape as it looked and thought that if the machinecould be restored it could be put to proper use in his Polkvillecrushed stone facility.Anderson gathered up some of Suit-Kote’s employees who
were especially creative and enjoyed a challenge and had themtake a look at the long abandoned machine. As he suspected, theconsensus was that the screener could be restored to functionali-ty with a few new parts, a weld here and there, and a lot of elbowgrease.
Restoring a ‘National Treasure’Leads to Business Partnership
Harvey Anderson, general manager ofSuit-Kote’s Polkville, N.Y., crushed stonefacility stands with the KPI-JCI Fast Traxportable tracked crusher, which was pur-chased from Baschmann Services.
The Kolberg screening plant that HarveyAnderson fondly refers to as “the nationaltreasure” dates back to the 1970s is howhis relationship with Baschmann Servicesbegan. They were able to quickly locatethe parts needed to get this machine upand running, which had been abandonedfor years.

Anderson had no knowledge of Baschmann Servicesand not a lot of experience with Kolberg Pioneer prod-ucts (now known as KPI-JCI). After conducting anonline search, he found out that Baschmann Services inElma, N.Y., was the closest dealer to him that wouldhave availability to Kolberg Pioneer parts.
One of the items Suit-Kote employees was able torecover from the abandoned screening plant was theoriginal serial number plate. Without a whole lot of opti-mism Anderson called the parts and service departmentat Baschmann Services with a description of the partsand the serial number of the machine that they were try-ing to restore. Much to his surprise, a few hours later hereceived a return phone call from Baschmann Services. They had been able to locate all of the parts that he waslooking for. They also had information on when themachine was originally sold, whom it was sold to, and aschematic along with owner’s manual for the entiremachine.
Based on the tremendous service that he received ona machine that hadn’t even been purchased fromBaschmann Services, a new relationship started to grow.
Mike Peters, the aggregate and recycling sales man-ager of Baschmann Services and Pete Baschmann, pres-ident, made their services available to Suit-Kote for theirfuture equipment needs and shortly thereafter thoseservices were utilized.
“One of the things that really sealed my relationshipwith Mike Peters is that at one point I was looking for awash plant, which Baschmann did not have available, and to help us out with nothing for him to gain himself,Mike located the plant for us,” said Anderson
“A few years ago we were looking to crush rap at ourpit and we were looking at horizontal shaft impactportable crushers. The company that we ordinarily hired

to do this crushing for us was not available sowith the intentions of simply renting themachine we rented a brand new horizontalshaft impact KPI-JCI Fast Trax crusher for amonth or two.
“Machines that we had seen in the past thatwere only able to crush at a rate of about 30tons per hour. The machine that we rentedfrom Baschmann Services was able to processat a rate of 150 to 200 tons per hour. After afew months rent with great production andvery low maintenance cost we purchased themachine and have never looked back.
“We have continued to run concrete andasphalt through this machine for the last sev-eral years. It has been very reliable and inex-pensive to operate. Blow bars and other wearitems that we have needed we have been ableto purchase from Baschmann Services at veryrealistic prices.”
“Sometime later we were looking to rent a400 horsepower vertical shaft impact crusher. After explaining my needs to Mike and Pete,we took a road trip to Peoria, Illinois, to lookat a few of the VSI Crushers that KPI-JCImanufactures, both in the field working andone at the KPI-JCI Dealership in that area.Once we decided what the size and configura-tion of the crusher should be for our applica-tion, Baschmann purchased a new crusherfrom the factory and put the machine that weneeded into their rental fleet. They rented it tous for a few months, and then took themachine back after our needs had been satis-fied.”
