Brantley Chiropractic, LLCYour Happiness & Success Begins With Your Health

Slowly but surely, Dr. Scott Brantley has seen patients willing to undergo acupuncture treatment. e Great Bend chiropractor

has been treating aches and pains since 1992 at Brantley Chiroprac-tic. Brantley is a Fellow with the Acupuncture Society of America a er 10 years of training. Brantley earned his acupuncture certi ca-tion through Dr. Qizhi Gao of the Kansas College of Chinese Medicine in Wichita. Gaos teach-ing programs are approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. Brantley has also trained with Dr. Richard Yennie of Kansas City, Mo., who is credited with combining acupunc-ture treatment in conjunction with chiropractic adjustment in the U.S.Brantley said his patients who

are helped by e ective acupuncture treatment are his best advocates. Were having more people ask

about acupuncture treatment, he said. More people are learning acupuncture is an e ective treat-ment option. ey are seeing the bene ts.Brantley said acupuncture has

been e ective treating bromyalgia, a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and tenderness in localized areas. For those chronic pain and

sickness situations, acupuncture treatment has shown to be very ef-fective, Brantley said. e patients smile and feel better. For the majority of his acupunc-

ture patients, Brantley uses electric-ity on the same acupuncture points that we would use a needle on. Ninety percent use electricity,

he said. You save some time be-cause you dont install needles and its just as e ective. Some patients have discovered

that acupuncture treatment has proven e ective when other meth-ods have not worked with their problem.Satisfaction with the treatment

has been high, Brantley said. Acu-puncture surprises me on a daily basis. Acupuncture treatment and chiropractic treatment are e ective

by themselves. When you combine the two of them, it can be a powerful treatment plan. Most times, we do those treatments together. An added bonus Brantley

has noticed is when patients are treated for a particular pain is-sue, other associated issues also disappear. e whole system is hooked

together and when we treat pa-tients for their pain symptoms, other symptoms disappear, he said.Brantley earned his doc-

tor of Chiropractic at Parker College in Dallas, Texas. Patients range from newborns to a 97-year-old patient. e average age is between 40 and 50 years old.Pain typically

is the trigger for patients to try chiropractic care. Brantley said as a health care profes-sional, he enjoys seeing patients show improve-ment with their pain or symptom. Some of these

causes are repeti-tive motion, an auto accident or simply wear-and-tear on the human body, he said. Its common-sense health care. It gives you satisfaction when the patient feels better imme-diately.Chiropractic is a health care

profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the e ects of these disorders on general health. e main chi-ropractic treatment technique in-volves manual therapy, including manipulation of the spine, other joints, and so tissues. Treatment also includes exercises and health and lifestyle counseling.

Barton County sits nearly in the geographical center of the state. The Arkansas River, the sixth larg-est river in the United States, flows through the county, with its northernmost bend peaking just six miles east of where Great Bend sits today. Indigenous peoples settled along the river for thousands of years before Spanish Conquistador and explorer Ferdinand Coronado and his men travelled through the area in the 1540s. They are reported to be the first Europeans to ever visit this portion of Kansas. Nearly three centuries later, the first Americans to officially visit the area were Lt. Zebulon Pike and his men while conducting an expedition to the

Rocky Moun-tains in 1806. Later, his route be-came known as the Santa Fe Trail, travelled by pioneers heading west for

a better way of life. Then came the railroads, and civilization in the form of cities and towns took hold. In 1867, Barton County was created, but it wasnt until 1872 that the minimum population of 600 was reached in order for the county to be organized. It was on May 16, 1872 that Gov. Harvey gave the nod for Barton County to be incor-porated, and declared Great Bend the temporary county seat. A week later, on May 23, it became permanent, and three townships were created --Great Bend, Lakin and Buffalo. The people who settled came from

all corners of the globe. Immigrants from throughout Europe settled on homesteads and helped build small towns, as did pioneers from the eastern United States. There were freed slaves, called exodusters who travelled to Kansas looking for a new life too. The surrounding prairie was broken

and farmed, and agriculture thrived. Through trial and error, they learned that wheat performed very well.Barton County has become a banner wheat county in Kansas. The main line of the Atchi-

son, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad followed the Arkansas River, replacing the Santa Fe trail. It brought goods and people into and out of the area, allowing cities to flourish with trade in the late 1800s and into the first half of the 1900s. In the late 1800s oil was discov-

ered in the Cheyenne Bottoms, a vast marshland of international importance north of Great Bend. The first well didnt produce, but subsequent drills were successful, and touched off an oil boom in the county. The oil industry today is very important economically to the area.During World War II, in 1943, Bar-

ton County became home to the Great Bend Army Air Field, where troops trained to fly B-29 bombers. Accord-ing to the Barton County Historical Society website, crews worked to transform this Kansas wheat field into an airfield and training facility. Bar-

racks, airplane hangars, and miles of concrete runways designed to hold the enormous weight of the B-29s (70,140 lbs. empty/135,000 lbs. loaded). By March 10, 1944, the 58th Bomb Wing would take off from these runways. After the war, so many families

settled in the county, housing was at a premium, which paved the way for construction of several Lustron Homes in the area. The company from Illinois only manufactured the homes for two years from 1948 to 1950. It went into bankruptcy for financial and distribu-tion reasons, but the houses lived up to their promise as being maintenance free. According to the Lustron Regis-try, there are still 18 existing Lustron homes in Great Bend standing today,

over 70 years later. According to the registrys website, the baked enamel panels and roofs continue to hold and are rust free with no need to paint. There is a Lustron home on display at the Barton County Historical Museum.During the 1950s, Great Bends City

Parks and Recreation administrator Brit Spaugh slowly created a zoo in the downtown park, which today bears his name. Even then, it was considered unusual for a city the size of Great Bend to have a zoo. In 1965, Barton County Community

College was founded, offering a local venue for higher education. The college continues to draw students from all over the country and athletes from overseas to the county each year. In 2011, it reported having 4,495 full and part-time students attending. Today, major industries in Barton

County include agriculture, oil, manu-facturing and medicine, according to the Barton County website. It is home to four school districts, several recreational attractions, and people who enjoy a combination of quiet country and mod-ern city lifestyles.

  • Founded in 1952, Great Bends Brit Spaugh Zoo, 2200 Main, is evolving into a 21st Century facility that in-cludes the Raptor Center. In 2012, the zoo completed its application for accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and underwent an inspection. A ruling from the AZA board was to be made in September. The zoo, which houses over 100 mammals,

birds, reptiles and insects, as well as an aquar-ium building, is dedicated to educating the public and encouraging wildlife conservation, while providing an enriched and entertain-ing experience for all ages. Admission is free and the zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Raptor Center serves as entrance to the

zoo. Its mission is to protect and conserve rap-tors birds of prey through rehabilitation, education, research and habitat preservation. Its a fitting role for this area, since Great Bend lies in the heart of the central flyway, between two wetlands of international importance: Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge and Quivira Na-tional Wildlife Area. Literally millions of birds pass overhead each year. At the Raptor Center, visitors can learn about birds of prey through interpretive exhibits comparing their wing-span to a hawks or learning more about how birds see. They can also find out what bird spe-cies have been recently seen in the area. The Raptor Center has a veterinary exam

room with a large window so visitors can watch

as animals receive physical care. Theres also a gift shop, the Critter Corner exhibit of small insects and reptiles, and a meeting area that can be reserved for events such as birthday parties. The zoo is also headquarters for a raptor

rehabilitation program. Injured birds receive medical care with a goal of releasing them back into the wild. They can receive both criti-cal and intensive care. Physical therapy starts in 8-by-10-foot enclosures known as flight mews, which encourage limited use of injured wings. To get birds ready for flight again, the next

stage is a 120-by-20-foot flight mew at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility in Larned, constructed in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Corrections. Here, inmates monitor the daily activities of the birds prior to release. Birds need to demonstrate their ability to fly, capture food, and negotiate turns and landings. The birds are observed, fed, and watered through observation portals without any interaction with humans. Rehabilitated birds are released in the area where they were found or another suitable environment.Call the zoo, 620-793-4226, to learn more

about the animals or to schedule a group tour. Membership in the Great Bend Zoological Society is $25 a year. To learn more, visit the website: www.greatbendzoo.com.

Limit your correspondance to no more than two pages. 2. Be respectful and limit

yourself to one topic. Be sure to state your reasons for support or opposition to a bill. Personalize the issue if you can.3. Be sure to include a return

address and ask your legislator to send a return letter explaining their position on the issue.

Make a phone call:1. You will likely be speak-

ing to a staff member, but dont fret they will make sure your elected official is informed of your opinion. When calling, ask to speak with the aid who handles the issue you are con-cerned with. 2. Identify yourself as a

constituent. A zip code will help verify this. 3. Once you have done this,

be sure to ask to leave a message letting the elected official know why your support or oppose the bill in question. You may ask

that the legislator respond to your phone call in writing, and ask that they respond with their position on the bill.

Send an email1. Due to overuse, email

is not the best communica-tion tool for making sure your elected official is informed of your position on an issue, un-less you have a personal email address. That being said, the guidelines are pretty much the same for writing a letter.2. Make sure you identify

yourself as a constituent, and back it up with your name, street address, city, state and zip code. You are competing with thousands of emails a week, but those from constituents are considered the most important. 3. Address only one issue. In

your final sentence, make sure to clearly state exactly what you are asking your elected official to do.4. Ask for a response. If

you receive a response letter, it means your email was read.

Visit face to face:1. Probably the most effec-

tive means of communicating your like or dislike of an issue. Attend a town hall meeting and stick around afterwards for the best chance to catch your Sena-tor or Representative. If thats not possible, you can request an audience.2. Elected officials websites

usually include instructions on how to schedule a visit. 3. Offer the following informa-

tion when scheduling: Request-ed date(s), number attending, the location and duration of the meeting, the subject and details of the meeting, and finally con-tact information including your name, phone number, address, orgainzation/affiliation (if ap-plicable), and email address. On the day of the meeting, provide point-of-contact information.
