“Learning Starts Here” is the key message this term and with the Year 12 Trial Exams starting it is more evident than ever. I had the pleasure of seeing the finished HSC Industrial Arts projects on Thursday. I would like to congratulate Ethan Tonkin-Rose and Stephen McGregor on the hard work that they have put in over the last few months. Both boys portfolios are a testament to their learning over the HSC year. With HSC major works due for Visual Arts soon and Music performances I wish all our Year 12 well over the coming weeks.

Barra had a great visit with the Preschool during the last fortnight. He was there to deliver invitations to our Early Starters Program. The program starts with our Kindy Orientation on the 19 September 2019. Barra was ablely assisted by Mia, Jasmine and Ali Coombes.

Year 7 & 8 are currently undertaking the Rock & Water program with Mr Johnston and Mr Simpson. The Rock & Water program is an experience that provides students a pathway to self-awareness, increased self-confidence and social functioning. Each participant of the Rock & Water program learns about responding to life with either a “rock” or a “water” attitude. The program is an excellent tool to support young people in finding their grounding, learning how to centre oneself and learning how to self-manage in social settings. Topics covered in the program include intuition, body language, mental strength, empathic feeling, positive feeling, positive thinking and positive visualizing.

Brain TeaserWhat day would yesterday be if Thursday was four days before the day after tomorrow?

Last Week’s Puzzle Some months have 30 days, some months have 31 days; how many have 28?

Answer: All of them

Australian Defence Force TalksThursday this week saw 2 representatives from the ADF Army and Navy branches visit the secondary school. The recruitment officers were here to present information to interested secondary students about the training , lifestyle and job opportunities available in the Australian Defence Forces.

The students were able to gain an insight into general recruitment and officer training and career progression in the forces

They led students through the recruitment process including the physical and aptitude aspects in selecting job opportunities in the forces.

The talks were well attended and students were asked some good questions to help their understanding of the process of joining the forces.

If students would like to know more about the forces or recruitment, they can feel free to see Mr Good at any time.

Careers Program Regional Meat Processing SectorAs part of the careers program here at Barraba Central School we have been engaged with a regional Meat Processing Sector collaboration between the 3 main industries in our region and the regional schools to help link students with the opportunities available.

The 3 key regional industries of Teys, Thomas Foods and Biada employ directly and indirectly close to 4000 people across the region and they were keen to present the future opportunities available to students.

They presented to the students the large scope of employment and training opportunities available from School Based Traineeships (SBAT’s) , transition to employment programs and Gap year opportunities as well as apprenticeships in a number of areas.

The 3 major employers are very excited about working with local schools and making those connections with local students.

The information session as held at Manilla Central School on Wednesday at 2pm. Students were transport will be with the careers teacher (Mr Good). There was no cost for the day.

Students need to be 16 years or older to participate and I hope they recieved an insight into the opportunities available.

Friday Night Rugby Round 823 students represented in round 8. Our 7 representatives in the 14’s boys worked hard in a combined team with players from 3 other schools. The boys were unsuccessful on the night but should be proud of their efforts after a 6 week break from football. Good work by Sam Bishton, Bradley Nieborak, Dylan Hatch, Jack Coombes, Cameron Tonkin-Rose, Brock Phillips and Nick Myers.

In the 16’s Max Gudshus, Bruce Simpson, Kane Ward and Jack Ward all contributed as they combined with Quirindi for a big win over Farrer.

The 17’s girls being Mia McArdle, Nicola O’Dell, Hailie Spence-Rose, Jessie Lott and Abbey Thompson combined well with teammates from Manilla for 2 wins from their 3 games on the night, where some good footy was played. In the 13’s Regan Simpson played really well in her first game for the school on Friday night and was very well supported by teammates Zahlie Cabot, Phoebe Hunter, Cate Bishton, Lori Lott, Kiah Newell and in her first game of rugby Kaila Gillogly. Two wins from two games is a great start ladies! The highlight of the night was the big grin on Kaila’s face as she scored a try right on the siren.

Thank you to Mr Simpson for his help during the week and for driving his car on Friday night. Thank you also to Mr Melville for his help on the night and to Jack McCarthy, Emily Kelso and Mia McCardle from the Barraba Rams for their help at training and/or on the night.

Friday Night Rugby Round 9A cold and blustery night was encountered by the 16 brave students who represented in round 9. The 14 boys’ performed well in a narrow defeat to Calrossy in a competitive game. Our 6 representatives being Bradley Nieborak, Brock Phillips, Jack Coombes, Dylan Hatch, Sam Bishton and Cameron Tonkin-Rose were in the thick of the action as they combined with boys from 3 other schools. This was a creditable performance from a side which was missing some of their more experienced teammates on the night.

The 16’s boys won by forfeit when their opponents from Armidale withdrew on the night.

The 17’s girls combined well with players from Manilla to win both of their games against McCarthy so well done to Jessica Lott, Mia McCardle and Abbey Thompson.

The 13’s girls continue to impress and also won both of their games on the night. Phoebe Hunter led the way as she ripped in doing the tough stuff and was well supported by her teammates Kiah Newell, Kaila Gillogly, Cate Bishton, Lori Lott, Zahlie Cabot and Regan Simpson.

The girls 7 a side competition finishes next week. We have been invited to participate in a seven’s gala day at Armidale (for both boys and girls) on the 28th August and I will determine the level of interest with you guys during the week. The boys Friday night 15 a side competition continues for the next few weeks.

Thank you to Mr Simpson and Mr Melville for their help during the week and/or on the night. Thank you to Shane Middlemiss, Mia McCardle and Kieran Darlington from the Barraba Rams for their help on the night and/or during the week.

Points for round 9:

3 points Bradley Nieborak, Jessica Lott and Phoebe Hunter

2 points: Brock Phillips, Mia McCardle, Kiah Newell

1 point: Sam Bishton, Dylan Hatch, Abbey Thompson, Cate Bishton, Lori Lott, Kaila Gillogly, Regan Simpson and Zahlie Cabot.

News from the school farmThe agricultural students this week was exposed to how technology can be used in the field. The local vet Caroline came and conducted a pregnancy test of the school’s ewes. Caroline explained to the students how the portable ultrasound machine worked and what the images on the hand held screen represented. If all goes well the school farm sheep population should double in population some time in October. A big thank you to Caroline.

NoiseThe bang of sticky bombs,

The crash of cars,

The ringing from afar,

Of the chains in a bar,

The screeching of wheels,

As the tyres slide along the ground,

The roar of the engine,

As it goes up the mound.

By Joe Brown

FrostAs I walk outside,

The breeze chills me,

As I stand out in the field,

I hear the birds chirping,

I think they are lonely,

As they are freezing,

I smell the fresh morning dew,

As it lays on the grass,

I think I have gone blue,

I taste the ripe plums,

As they are nice and juicy,

I eat it as my mind drums,

I see white frost,

Laying heavily on the car windscreen,

The sun slowly rises,

That the frost gets lost.

By Hannah Walker

Senses The sun is shining in the sky,

The light so bright that it hurts my eyes,

Birds are chirping in the trees,

Their feathers so soft, like fuzzy honey bees,

The smell of honey fills the air,

It’s no wonder their hives are attacked by bears.

By James Duggan

I Like NoiseThe roar of the crowd,

The clapping and cheers,

Makes me happy I am here,

The thud of a ball as it hits a hand,

The cry from the stalls,

And the music from the band,

Who is that guy,

Scoring that try,

The din of the crowd,

My parents so proud.
